I was nine years old when this model came out... and you are right, best Thunderbird ever!
All the 64s were great cars , not just the thunderbird but i loved the comet the fairlane the galaxie the falcon etc they were all great with the addition of the 289 engine. I think possibly the best year for Ford.
I had a 65 Bird. Beautiful car with every option. The only complaint I had is that they are a uni-body car. Makes for a very tight engine compartment.
Colum shift with that All column shift Why never made nothing but
My aunt had a ‘64 coupe. I thought the dashboard and console were the absolute coolest part. It felt like you were in your own spaceship
Great color! Is that a factory color? Never have seen one that color.
While it's true that sales definitely improved with the introduction of the Square Bird, I would venture to say it was a totally different market. I don't think anyone that owned a Baby Bird traded in their car for a Square Bird.
Every generation of the Thunderbird is a different car that could've easily been given a different name. They just kept the name because people knew it. I wish they had continued to make it a 2-seat luxury Corvette
I'm not a big fan of Fords. But I love all 60s cars. One day I'll have a 60s car. Preferably a big block V8. But a straight (or slant) 6 would be okay too. Just depends on what car and options really.
The nice thing about the 64 T-birds is that your only option was a V8!
Oh BULLSHIT! That 390 was a boat anchor. It was just a baby Lincoln nothing more!
But it was still good for 300 hp...
Ok….I’ll prove you wrong. It looks like early 60’s shit. There isn’t a car around from that era that can compete with the cars that are available today. Move into the future dude. There is a reason we don’t listen to music from a Victoria anymore.
Oh trust me, I know. Even econoboxes of today are better than anything that came off the factory floor in the 60s in terms of build quality and even performance. I just think this is the prettiest and best Tbird of all time.
Never ridden a 4500lbs two-door with 428 CI engine?
It's nice to hear you talk about this car. A Hard top was my first car and I've had it for 48 years. In 2016 I restored it and I always get a lot of thumbs up when ever I drive it. These sure aren't considered fast today but when I was a kit and driving it in the late 70's, it would stomp just about any new car, especially on the freeway. I loved to pick on new Camaro's.
Glad to hear you still have it. What fun!
Had one. The electrics were a disaster.
Ah... the 60s...
1965 T-Bird with sequential tail lights is better.
They wanted to put them in the 64 but weren't sure if state regulations would allow them.
The Flair and Bullet Birds are my top two and pretty much a tie for favorite Thunderbird.
While I love the bullet bird taillights, the front end of the flair birds just looks better to me.
My brother had an Arcadian blue hardtop in the 80s. The steering wheel moved to the right when you opened the door.
The tilt-away steering wheel was a cool feature.
My first car was a '65 ragtop, only some very slight trim differences between the two years. It was definitely NOT a show car, but as a high school kid, it was a blast...when I could keep it running! Sold it to a guy who restored it, so the story ends well!
Nice car for a high school kid!
💋
💋
Never understood why they didn't just used a metal insert in the roofs of cars from the early '30s & earlier, instead of fabric & wood.
Love LaSalle. Kinda like a Packard 120 model. Can Lummox has it? Unusual color for Pre-War. Spare tires in the fenders are called 'side mounts'.
I’m a fan of the ‘57 bird BUT the ‘64-‘66 with its curved back seat was beautiful
It's really an amazing people of automotive style.
Glad to see the video on this car. I may be biased as I have a ‘64 but I agree that they’re the best Thunderbirds around! Awesome video.
Lucky you!
Me too!
In the 1930's due to the depression Packard and Cadillac had a problem with high price cars not selling very well. In answer to this problem the LaSalle at GM and the Clipper at Packard. These models did not carry the high luxury price tag but were a step above Buicks, Oldsmobile and high-end Studebakers. But GM realized as the depression waned the LaSalle was diluting the Cadilac image. By 1958 Packard was no longer but Cadillac is still with us.
The 64s are awesome, that color is a great choice. ❤
The blue and white is perfect.
The convertible is better looking than the hardtop
I agree, although the hardtop is nice looking.
66 Landau--with the factory options Dean ordered in Murders Row!
You mean Matt Helm!
Thank you so much for covering this!! I agree about the Flair Birds, except the top year for me is 1965. The differences are quite subtle in styling though and I am biased. If you look at the car at 2:42, that is a twin to one I rebuilt many years ago. The memories come flooding back every time I see one, especially the interior. Again, many thanks, your content is truly excellent ~ Chuck P.S. Terrified many people when I'd swing the steering wheel over getting out of the car. 😂
So far, everyone agrees!
I have a 64 but other than the brushed dash, there's nothing that isn't better on the 65. They just have so many refinements.
In sync with you on this. ❤
Thanks!
Back in the 70s my parents close friends across the street had a couple of them, they would Kreme’s kids into one and take us to school and I thought they were so creepy with the seats that spun around, as the years went on they were both parked out in the woods they are probably still there today and I would see them as we would ride scenarios around the yard still creeped out but I now realise how beautiful they are and harmless…. Those were the bullet birds with the big round, tail lights and the bullet front. When we rode to school it was one adult and five kids stacked and packed in there any which way we could half an hour at least to get to the private school we went to I was so thankful when they pushed those things into the woods and upgraded to a 70s LTD
Who needs selt belts!
@ Every trip was an adventure we used to ride in the back of a pick up truck standing up leaning on the cab
What an atr deco masterpiece!! Love the two tone paint job!!
As GM person, I was always curious about the LaSalle. I had seen them and new they were Cadillac sibling. Thus deeply appreciate your report and Automotive knowledge, and especially the history. Dennis, Mesa.
1st Gen Camaro was designed by Chevrolet, and GM made Chevy share the body with Pontiac. 2nd Gen Firebird was designed by Pontiac, and was then shared with Chevrolet. '70 Firebirds had 1 year only 12 bolt posi rear ends and adjustable headrests. I still have my '70 Palladium Silver Formula 400 sitting in the garage, but at about 9mpg it rarely comes out of hiding.
GM had a policy that every dealer would have a "Companion Car" A dealer could also sell you a car that was cheaper. eg. Oldsmobile Viking
I drove a 1967 Firebird convertible 326 2 spd automatic in High school... got it 3 days before my 17th birthday... best man from my wedding has it now... now sports a Ram Air IV spec 455 and 3 speed automatic... and it is for sale now... $60K...
I’ve seen this very Tucker at the Martin Museum, and took a bunch of photos trying to capture the details without climbing over the rope. It’s quite impressive in person, and I very much enjoyed spending time with the car and speaking with the staff. If you ever get the chance, pay a visit. It’s well worth the time spent.
Great video and very enjoyable to watch. I actually own 3 W body cars and just love em! Little bit of misinformation though. The 2.8...1988 WASN'T the last year for it. Midway thru 1989, the 2.8 was still available and could only be ordered with the Getrag 282/5 speed manual. Later on in 89, the 3.1 became available. 1989 was actually the last year for the 2.8. Rick's comment about the HP rating for the 3.1 is also generous. The actual output was 140 HP...NOT 160. For 1989, the 3.1 Turbo V6 was NOT available in a GTP. The GTP didn't exist yet. The GTP package actually debuted for 1991. The 3.1 V6 Turbo was standard in all 1989-1990 Turbo Grand Prix coupes or TGP. The same identical motor/transaxle was also standard in the newly debuted 1990 STE Turbo...the 4 door version of the 89-90 TGP's. They were rated at 205 HP. Most 2.8 motors/models were only used up to the late 80's/early 90's...not mid 90's.
It's not prediction, it suggestions. The nowadays are just actualizing what the past has design .
It was an under powered badly engineered and way overpriced. A shit box on wheels.
"Ventaplanes?" We just called them "wind wings". And "jump seats" for kids.
Stand still when you are presenting. You make me sea sick. 😏 However a great presentation. 👍
More importantly....What happened to American cars?
Dad had a vega wagon. Had to get a running start to make a hill.
You remarked at the styling changes from 1930 to 1937 on the LaSalle as though it was a big deal. But all cars had made those kind styling changes by 1937.
Very true. I was just looking at the LaSalle for this piece.
In the 60s an old guy had a LaSalle at the meat market. When he came out, I asked him to start it up so that I could hear it run. He laughed, put it in gear, and pulled away.
Next do the prewar Crosley in the background?
I voted for this car. Thanks Rick !!! <<Mark in Ohio>>
Winner, winner!
I love Lasalle
Wow, a real live human presenter!
My wife will be glad to hear that...
AI is getting so real, how can we be sure he ISN'T AI?
Worth noting is that during this time Packard's improved sales were due to the introduction of lesser expensive models that still carried the Packard name as opposed to Cadillac not doing that (LaSalle filled that slot). Packard's strategy marked the beginning of the end for them because it cheapened the brand and marked the beginning of its decline and demise after WWII.
Good point.
