Paint Experiments: Orange

There are only a few orange pigments in watercolor. Pure pigment or mixed orange color it does not make much of a difference, or it does?

I do not know much about the chemistry and science behind pigments and paints, but I do like to experiment and test their properties. Surprising results after 6 months. Another 6 months and we will see which is the most lightfast color of them all.

My favorite red. I like the hue. I like the bright oranges it mixes. I like the dull purples when mixing with any blue color. Now I want to mix it with all the other colors.

Red is one of the most disappointing colors in Watercolor, at least for me. The nice deep shades are not lightfast. The bright reds have limited value range. Then, it is a matter of temperature and saturation and on and on. Have you found the perfect Red?

Can't decide what colors to add to your palette? Try the mix and compare chart. The color theory may give you an idea of what color you may get by mixing two colors, but with watercolors, there are always interesting surprises. Don't have time or patience for these charts? Look at the ones I made and find your favorites.

Do I want to own all colors? Yes. Will I use at least half of them? No. Is there such a thing as too many watercolor swatching videos? Perhaps. I am at point in my watercolor journey where collecting watercolors is more enjoyable than painting in watercolor. Any tips and tricks on how to paint more are greatly appreciated.
Mother Color Experiment

There is nothing wrong with a rainbow painting; but if you would like some color harmony in your artwork, try using a mother color. Payne's Gray mixed with other colors would make great night and winer scenes. The colors in the painting with all colors mixed with Green Gold remind me of evening light in autumn. A time of the day, a place, a season, a mood all generated from one color.

It is hard to find a perfect red that is light fast also. Then, there is also the challenge of using red in a painting and still making it look vibrant and lively. Red in watercolor is a lot of work and still a skill level I am in the process of unlocking. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks for your video ❤ have you ever tried to varnish any and see if they would fade?
I have not thought about varnish for watercolor, but now I will add it to my long list of experiments. Not sure if varnishes have UV protective properties. What I am curious is if museum grade glass protects fugitive pigments.
@@gabrielamorovan577 haven't tried it on watercolor either. But do have UV resistant semi mat varnish spray for some fluid inks I did because some colours was fading away.😕 it seems to work for the ones I have hanging om my wall for some years now. Thanks for your reply🙂
@@dianefrandsen2697 thank you for your comment. That is very useful information.
I am glad this video helped. I was also very impressed with how Napels Yellow from Daniel Smith mixes with other colors. There are recipes and rules that can be followed for predictable mixing results but I do not mind mixing everything. I may get a lot of muddy colors but every once in a while I get a gem.
Interesting variety of results! I've never thought of using Naples yellow in place of Yellow Ochre; I'd like to experiment with that. The Anthraquinone Blue looks like another I'd like to try. Thanks for the video!
I enjoyed the swatching-lots of interesting information, and it's very relaxing to watch. I used to use a lot of Winsor & Newton colors many years ago, and I'd like to go back and try some of them again.
@@wdashwor thank you for your comment. At some point Winston and Newton pain was made in England. Now they are made in France. I have seen comments from other watercolorists that the new formula feels different. I have mostly the new paint made in France. The few tubes that I have that are made in England appear to be a little more shiny when dry. Let us know how the new ones compare to what you remember.
@@gabrielamorovan577 Interesting that they would change the formula. I was painting primarily in oils (and some gouache) in the Winsor & Newton, so I'm not sure I used enough of the older W&N watercolor to see the difference. One W&N color I've always liked for landscapes is the sap green-there's really no equivalent to it that I've found in any other line. Here I notice they don't include a vermillion hue, which is a color I want to try. What would you say the closest to a vermillion is in these?
@@wdashwor they used to have a sap green with PO49 pigment in it. Sadly is now discontinued. I see it once on a while on eBay but the price can be very high. The closest color to a Vermilion would be Cadmium Scarlet. Winsor Orange red shade with a touch of red would make a nice Vermilion also.
@@gabrielamorovan577 Thanks! I'm not sure if the sap green I use was the one with the PO49, maybe so. I know it was only so-so on lightfastness (had a rating of B, I think), so maybe that's why they modified it.
Bt. Sienna is what a former wc teacher called ‘the magic colour. You can add it to any other color and it will desaturate it in the nicest way. Much less so than paynes grey!
That is a great advice. I need to add that to my paint swatches. I liked Qor Burnt Sienna, perhaps because is slightly warmer and applies very even
Those are very pretty colors! Thanks for sharing. It's fun and interesting to see different art supplies and hear your experiences.
I've heard Sonnet are very good for a student grade range. I have a set of White Nights that I like, and a set of Kuretake and Van Gogh for my student grade paints for messing around with. Always love a good swatching video, thanks for sharing this unique tin!
I am thinking of sharing my process of figuring out color schemes using the colors from this palette. Thank you for your comment.
Hey great to see this followup! I returned a Kuretake set I got and never unwrapped because I looked into the pigments and they were disappointing. (If you search for Kuretaki Gansai Tambi pigment chart and you will find one on their website. You're right, they make no claims about lightfastness.) From looking at the pigment chart it looked like the blues and greens would be pretty lightfast, but the reds/oranges/yellows/purples were suspicious. It's great to see your actual tests though. It turns out that "permanent" markers like Sharpie will also fade in light, and that can also kind of fool your eye when examining swatches. I suppose one could use india ink to avoid this problem, maybe if I ever get around to doing any tests I'll try that!!
That’s so crazy to pay 40$ for a yellow tin. Y’all pls. Just buy an empty tin for way less. Like half. So crazy.
I know I could have bought a $10 tin, but they did not have a yellow one. I will just have to file this reckless purchase under midlife crisis 😊.
I live in Phoenix Arizona where much of the professional life pass testing is done and from the test that I've conducted and feel of using them I would have to say that they are a lower to middle end of artist grade. They are not what I would consider student grade at all.
Yes, they feel very nice to paint with and the transparency is great.
I have the pigment information for you, I have had them for years , on my second set now. Warning: I do not remember where I got it and it might have changed since, but here goes: Zinc white is PW4, Hanza lemon is PY3, Yellow medium is PY13, Gold ochre is PY3, PY2, PR102, Orange is PO13, Red light is PR2,0 Carmine is PR170, Madder lake red is 63:1, English red is PR101, Azure is PB15:3, Ultramarine light is PB29, Blue is PB15, Bluish green is PB15:3, PG7, Violet light is PV2, Violet deep is PV3, Emerald green is PG7, Sap green is PG7, PY3, Green deep is PG8, Raw Sienna is PBr 7, Burnt sienna aslo PBr7, Sepia is PR102, PR187, PBr 7 and lastly Lamp black Pbk7, PR631, PB15 Also note, keep the plastic thingy on top of the metal layer, it will stick to your paints Enjoy!
@@Replicanna-rl6zg thank you. This is great information. The pigment are about right. At least comparing with the ones I have from other brands. And the violets being not so light fast
When I found current pigment information on these the only difference I find in this list is that the lamp black contains pbk11 not PPK 7 and it does granulate
@@ArtandDiamondsWithEskies Thanks, cool, the one I have is also granulating, maybe the pigment has been changed between my first and second set
I tested them and the orange, madder and the 2 violets are not at all lightfast. The other colours are fine.
Thank you for sharing the information about lightfast. I could tell the violets are too vibrant.😊
Rosa also has the 3 row tins. One of them is turquoise, super cute. Thanks for the video 😊
I looked at those also. I believe they have three different sets. I will eventually get one of theirs also 😊. I am hoping Roman Szmal will come up with some interesting metal boxes.
@gabrielamorovan577 that would be cool 😁
I have wanted that yellow tin too but I don't need ANY more paint.
I had the same struggle. Eventually the yellow box won. I am thinking of using the paints in my coloring books.😊 I have some of them still waiting for some attention.
Thank you for this and I'll be watching to see how they turn out~
I am also curious how they will change after one year.
Hullo, it is always good to see progression reports on a lightfast test. Thank you.
I am planning to make another batch of swatches soon. I am surprised how unreliable some of the manufacturers ratings are.

I don’t know if this would work for you, (especially because you’re filming in real time)but when I do my value strips, I mix up a large puddle of thinnish watery amount of paint+ water which I feel is value 1. Then I paint the entire strip with it. Let dry completely and then glaze…but only from 2-10 this time. Dry completely then glaze from3-10. Dry. Then glaze from 4- 10. Dry…and continue to build up the layers until you reach 10.Kinda tedious, but it does reveal the values!
Thank you. That is great advice. I will give it a try. I will have to use good cotton paper. I noted layering on the cellulose paper is almost impossible.
I was wondering whether to buy this book and I am definitely going to get it now. Your paintings turned out really well and are very pretty. I hope to do as well as you!
I hope it is helpful for you. I have some prior experience with painting with oil and acrylic paint. What helped me was to read the tutorial two or three times before I even started the painting. Let me know how it goes.
@@gabrielamorovan577 I will and thank you! Can't wait to get started...
Very nice. Dee
I’m surprised that PY93 is not lightfast. I thought it had was at least 6 on the blue wool scale. Thanks for sharing your results 😊.
I was sad to see that it faded. Yellow Sophie from Sennelier is a very nice yellow. I remember hearing about this in another video here on UA-cam but do not remember the channel.
@@gabrielamorovan577 Same here. It’s on my wishlist, but I might remove it now.
I love the results with the cobalt teal!
The brighter the color the more interesting the mix will be. There will be a video coming up soon with larger swatches
Very fancy!
It seemed a good idea at the time. Now I am overwhelmed by the many colors 😊.
@@gabrielamorovan577 I can imagine. A few new colours, to me, are overwhelming, 98 must have been daunting 😄.
@@awatercolourist I am doing light fast tests and swatching all my colors. Picking colors for a painting based only on hue is not quite enough to ensure a desired outcome. I should start keeping notes :)
@@gabrielamorovan577 Indeed!
Thank you 🙌🏼
Windsor & Newton have a granulating medium. I forget to order it to try it. Also mixing the tube watercolors with liquid graphite can result in granulation. I also don't want to spend a lot of money on granulating paints if possible. Good video 👍🏽
I have not tried the granulating medium. I have also seen the liquid graphite but was not sure exactly how to use it. Hope this samples help to mix something with the paints you already have. I seen that even with ready made granulating colors, the paper and the amount of water I use are very important to reveal the special effects.
Is it bad that Rose of Ultramarine is my favourite here? I think it's because I prefer mixing my own violet, but I'd better find a use for the couple of quin violets I have. Thanks for the comparison!
Is not bad at all. I personally prefer the look of granulating and separating colors and I almost never use just one color in a wash. Adding a granulating blue or red to a quin Violet might make the color more interesting.
I'd love to see more mixing with your other granulating colors!
Thank you for your comment. I am planning to re do the swatches in a larger format and on different types of paper.
I especially loved the deer picture - so sweet. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for sharing this video. I am a beginner in watercolor and I appreciate your paintings and also the sources that you are following and learning from, whicn I have not seen mentioned before.
Hi Gabriela Thank you for this review of my book! You are very positive and respectful but honest too about the slight problems such as not having exactly the same colours. I am glad you enjoyed it and your paintings are excellent. Ann
Thank you. I love your book and it helped me soo much. The instructions are very helpful for new watercolorists.
I love mixes of cobalt teal and transparent pyrrole orange!
It was a surprise for me. I did not expect such a nice green. I could probably paint a landscape with just those two colors.
I enjoyed this different approach and found it useful and enjoyable to watch!
Nice video! I really love the mixtures with the cobalt violet. It is such a beautiful color on its own and a surprisingly great mixer.
I used the Winsor and Newton cobalt violet. I know there are slight variations in pigment hues and properties between brans. I hope to get a cobalt violet form Qor and see what happens.
Thank you, beautiful mixes. I noticed there was a shine on the paint, why is that?
Thank you for your comment. I don't have much experience with watercolors, but from what I learned so far, I believe the paper and the water to paint ratio have something to do with the shine. I used very inexpensive cellulose paper for the swatches. And, I used the color straight from the pan with very little water added to it. Hope this helps.
Thank you, it helps me to make better choices with paper too.
Thank you for reviewing this book. It looks very good and just what I’m looking for; I think I will buy it. Your artwork is excellent and your painting style is very neat. I will be very pleased if my results are half as good.
I am glad I could help. I bought and barrowed many Watercolour books with some tutorial but so far this is my absolute favorite. Hope you have some good results. I did not have the colors she suggested but that's not a big deal. Only the salt effect was a little off, then I learned that not all colors react to salt the same way.
You certainly did do well following the Flower Book. Keep it up You are doing so well, i'm inspired!
Thank you Vincent. I was wondering about the other books in the series. Have you tried any of them?
