2016 L405 ZF-8Speed Transmission Service - Pt. 3 of the 110K Service

Part 3 of ??? 3 or 4 - In this video, I drain the old fluid, drop the pan and integrated filter and refill with OEM ZF Fluid. These things have a weird sequence to make sure you have enough fluid in them... You have to fill as much as you can, run it through the gears and then crawl back under to make sure it is full. I have never had one that isn't, so I cheat a bit with the nose of the truck ...

    Great review of the L494...I was looking at purchasing a L322 to replace my L320, but in the end decided to go with a L494 HEV Autobiography from 2016. Very happy with the car, apart from the much heavier steering and the lack of keyless entry :) But you know how it is...second hand you're at the mercy of the classifieds :P

    The Range Rover Jeremy Clarcson and Harry Metcalfe called "the best Range Rover ever made" was the 2007-2010 TDV8, not the 3.0 straight six presentet here. That is a huge difference.

      This one is actually a 4.4L Jag V8 'Petrol' - also a solid lump. If they had paired this engine, or it's twin the 4.2SC, with the 8-speed ZF Transmission - it would have been 'magical'. Here in the Colonies, we never got an inline 6 - I think that was a BMW Diesel? Early on we had the BMW M62 - which I think is also a V8, Then the 4.4/4.2 Jags and after 2009, we went to the 5.0 Jag V8 and SC V8. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment! - JDW

      @@FatAmericansGuide Ok, that 4.4 petrol V8 is a good engine. BUT, the car Clarcson and Metcalf called "the best Range Rover ever made" is the full fat RR TDV8 3.6 twin turbo. 272bhp. The one with analogue instruments. The 4.4 petrol might be just as good, I have never driven one. But the 3.6TDV8 is actually a very good car.

      @FatAmericansGuide ok, thanks for the info. I was disappointed to see Thule discontinued their L322 specific kit. Unfortunately I'm in south Florida or I would take you up on the offer. • @FatAmericansGuide
      @FatAmericansGuide 18 днів тому

      @@rodneykahane4994 Honestly - I have been very lucky... I don't really do anything to it. I take it through a Mr. Clean Carwash and they 'detail' the interior now and again - they may use some protectant. I also wipe it down with Armor-all leather wipes when I hit the seats every 6months or so... but it is not a super intentional thing. Atlanta is not S. FLA - but we get some pretty intense sun. I try to keep mine garaged and park with my tail towards the sun if possible - mostly so the darkened glass if facing that way - keeps it a bit cooler. I would have to check the shed, but if you ever come through - let me know. The box will be dustier, but probably still here?!?!

    Currently in a 1996 Lexus LS400, but would love to own a L322 4.4L if a good one pops up. Does the crankshaft on the diesel L405 ever scare you? It appears that pretty much all engines have a weak point. The 5.0 Petrol in the later US L322's had timing guide issues. The 3.0 Td6 has a tiny crank failure rate - but when it goes - It takes the truck with it! The pulleys slipping back could also be too to high belt tension. Most manufactures have a spec that states to leave the tensioners slightly loose and have you rotate the engine around and then tighten to tensioners all the way down, that way the belt see its lowest and highest tension and sets itself in place. Obviously varies from engine to engine, but generally speaking….

  • @jacobwilson1818
    @jacobwilson1818 Місяць тому

    Belt could be too tight and causing causing wear in the cam journals. Had this happen on a Miata I purchased. Pulled the belt and inspected cam journals/bearings and didn’t out all the tension on the belt. Sound was greatly reduced but needed a line bore and cams to be silent.

    Good job. The transmission oil cooler thermostat opens at 69degC / 156degF. Ideally you need to get the oil up to that temperature to let the new oil push the old oil through, then wait for it to cool back down to just over 30degC / 86degF to do a final level check with the engine running. As a lot of oil is held in the torque converter and not the transmission pan, draining from the pan doesn't remove all of the old oil. It's best to do multiple drain and refill cycles to dilute down the old oil. I swapped out my L405 transmission oil at 60k miles back in 2020 and did 4 drain and refill cycles at that point. This year I hit 115k miles and did 3 drain and refill cycles. Hope that helps and keep up the good work!

    Hi. Thank you for interesting video. I am wantching post desicion to buy one but still interested of what other folks see in this car. I picked 5.0 SC. It actualluly has much better fuel mileage then my previous L320. I'd get 250-270 miles out of a tank. In 2016 RR it was 350 and did not even show "low fuel" yet, so looks like 2013 RRS VS 2016 RR with same 5.0SC engine, you get at least 100ml more out of a tank of fuel.

    • @FatAmericansGuide
      @FatAmericansGuide 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Some of that range has to do with the larger tank size in the L405 and not necessarily better economy. I *think* the L405 5.0 SC comes with a 27.5 gallon tank. My TD6 has a 23.5 Gallon tank and My wife's old L320 5.0SC had a 19 gallon tank - it might touch 13.5Miles per US gallon on the highway... Around town I think it got about 8 or 9 MPG. I am glad you found the truck for you! Enjoy your wonderful beast! Thanks again for watching! - JDW

    I tried the wire bypass (blue wire to dome light). It certainly unlocked the key…but the car wouldn’t start. Once I disconnected the wire, the car would then start after pulling fuse 18 everytime. I noticed your video was clipped so I couldn’t tell if you were actually able to start the car after connecting the blue wire to the dome light.

      @FatAmericansGuide 3 місяці тому

      Thank you for watching, and leaving a comment! On Colonel Reb, my 2006 l322, attaching the dome light did bypass the barrel lock. Once the key would turn it started right up. It's kind of funny though there are times when I will get in the car and between putting my phone in the phone holder and putting on the seatbelt, the dome light will go out and the barrel lock re-engages... You can either pop the door back open, or hit the dome light up above and it will start. There are other videos out there, and I have a spare steering column, I may mess with it and see if I can get it to work as it should. Thanks again for watching!

      (I can't reply with a picture... but) My drive has a break in it - which I love for servicing my vehicles. It slopes down pretty good then breaks and flattens out some leading into my garage. I put the single set of ramps on the flatter spot and the other set of tires on the slope - this creates kind of a natural 'pit' for me to work in. With this set-up and the Rovers set to off-road height - I get probably 30" or more to the door sill. Enough for my fat @ss to get under the truck. I've been sucking for years with my MB CDI, I don't miss the mess. I also have a 2016 td6, but an RRS. T6 Rotella is great stuff, I used it for over 100k in my TDI, but it's not the best choice for a low ash, particulate filter rig. I too am looking to go to a 5w-40. But Rotella is API CH-4, that is different from C4.

      @@FatAmericansGuide API CH-4 is for diesel engines "without advanced after-treatment emissions systems". I have not found any 5w-40 ACEA rated c1 or c4, the low ash ratings. So far - So Good with the diesel! I did have a bit of a mess with the DEF/DPF System when I first got it and that was a $2,500 bill!?!? I think the diagnosis was incorrect - now that I am more knowledgeable - but since then it has been flawless. Love the fuel economy. Just did an oil change and serviced front diff last night (Aug 25, 2024). Rear Dif, Xfer Box and Transmission service in the coming week. I bought it at 97K Miles and it is on 110K now. Trying to decide if I am going to do the front Timing Belt myself when it hits 115K... Ever since the VW mess with the diesels, we don't really get that many. Find a good Indy that knows diesels in case you need back-up. My wife had a 5.0 SC V8 in her 2011 L320 - I really did not mess with it, but that thing got HORRIBLE mileage. I have an 08 L322 SC which I certainly enjoy driving. I think the L322 has a more distinctive shape. The only thing that does not impress me is the HVAC system. It is not really a climate control system as you cannot set a specific temperature. The numbers on the dials are just relative, 24 being warmer than 22 but not exactly 24 degrees. Then there is that horizontal wheel to further confuse things...
