I have several DVD's, not just WB, that not a fingerprint or scratch on them, won't play properly any longer. So the term is "disc rot", huh? I have used several players, some older ones will work better, but some are just lost. This happened to many of my "Battlestar Galactica" reboot DVD's (Universal) bought season by season; and there is not a streaming alternative for the show. Nothing like taking mint care of my DVD collection and it just goes down all on its own. I still much prefer physical media over streaming ("Opps! Something went wrong!"}, but setting down to relax and watch an old DVD and it freezing up is a good way to get riled up instead of enjoying the movie.

in reality no matter how good of a quality disc or how well you take care of it it will eventually die even without the disc rot issue. All optical media as well as magnetic media will slowly die. Its because of the sun itself. The sun emits solar radiation that will destroy them unless they are buried underground to block harmful radiation. Still no excuse for these companies creating faulty dvds.

I understand what you mean. The sound effect I used in the video was ripped from the cd I had shown and was imported into my finished video. Originally, I intended to play the sound effect on a cd player but my Sony Walkman stopped working recently. Initially, the video was supposed to be uploaded on the same day as the mushroom video in 2015, but copyright claims from History Channel delayed my upload. As a result of that, the video has been on my channel for months and has only recently started gaining viewership. I have nothing to gain from debunking an older video like that since my channel is too small to monetize.

I have the exact same WB snapcase cardboard DVD release of TRAINING DAY. No visual damage, but it doesn't read the disc for about 15-20minutes after halfway of the movie. It will try reading and skip about full 20minutes ahead. Regardless of players I tested :D Disc looks minty and shiny no scratches. Shame, cause I kinda think those cardboard snapcases are kinda neat. Can't remember if I had another of those doesn't work. But, I've heard particularly those releases have the most problems.

With the whole disc rot..... I get around it 2 ways..... 1. I make a digital file for myself 1st.... and 2. I make two additional copies on dvds immediately after the digital copy to counter the rot if that happens (but I like thinking ahead for those worse case scenario's)..... and I never had any issues since..... if the dvd rot happens I still keep the original to show I still have the original before switching to the dvd's exclusively.... that way I can prove the videos are mine and original.... the rotted disc I put in a sealed zip lock bag in the dvd covert use the recorded disc's exclusively....... sometime a few extra steps saves a lot of time trying to recover a lifetime of collecting something that are not readily available down the road

@@ClaytonCaplinger for sure. I can tell by the pattern it leaves on the bottom. Never a good thing when they do that. Disc rot is rare and usually not the issue. Sometime the player itself has problems reading when they get older. I tend to use a game system that also plays Blu ray for my dvd’s. I also very rarely see disc rot in the thousands of discs I deal with every year at my shop. It’s rare, but I have seen it. Looking at your European Vacation disc, I can see that it has been buffed poorly. At some point in the past someone used a disc doctor on it. You can see the pattern in the light. Very bad for discs and it appears that most of the wear is focused near the center ring where the disc starts reading from. In my opinion, not discs rot, but definitely has wear in the places that are vital to it’s functionality. I have several disc rotted discs in my collection, but they all have a certain hue to bottom of the disc. I also have a couple of thousand dollar disc resurfacing machines that will make discs look new. Not sure what you are using. You may need to show your process of buffing discs if you haven’t already. I own a video store and deal with disc repair for customers every day and I am just trying to help. Disc rot is a real thing, but that’s not always the issue.

This movie was on the "forbidden" shelf of my super-christian home growing up. I snuck it one night, maybe 1999 as a 9 year old, and this movie absolutely terrified me. This scene in particular. I don't know why, it's not scary yet it's the stuff of nightmares. Now I do this dance at my children. My youngest gets it. I start this dance at him and he covers his head and screams at me to stop. Of course I do, my oldest can play along with the dance. But to my youngest, as to me, it's existential dread somehow manifest. Such a strange film.

Problems encountered in the middle of the movie are from reading the middle tracks of the metal ring as the main feature is recorded on the disc from the inner circle to the edge. Nice of you the show the typical appearance of the rotting metal recording layer as it starts. Other than for the purposes of this video, what reason is there to keep "rotten" freature? When you buff a disc do you use the same micro size for all types of disc such as CD, DVD, & Blu-Ray? I had used an inexpwnsive machine to remove scratches from used DVDs, but it consumed too much time and gave up as it was not worth the effort.

To be honest with you it looks like you don’t know how to handle your disc, buffing a movie should be a last resort if it doesn’t work, because once you scratch the first layer of a DVD you are potentially putting cracks in the protective coating that will allow air to get in and rot your disc overtime.

Yah that sounds like BS, how much is giant movie studios paying you to spread misinformation to try and get people on the streaming??? I have well over 1000 movies and they all work perfectly fine only one movie didn’t work in 20 years.

Okay so Warner is the only one that I heard had has a big problem. Why is that a reason to get rid of all of your movies. Also this isn't a problem with Blu-rays that I know of. And with me personally I haven't had any problem with my Warner DVD so far. If all 50 of your Warner movies were bad I'm wondering where you keeping them in a garage?

My definition, if Warner Brothers DVDs are bad, so are MGM and RKO. This involves thousands of movies.

One of my Val Lewton double features DVDs from Warners rotted and won't play past the logos. The crummy part is that one film, "I Walked With a Zombie," is not available on HD yet and I no longer own my laserdisc copy. Fortunately the other is on BD. I have only one other disc in my collection that rotted: "Trinity and Beyond," which won't even make it past the intro before breaking up into blocking and freezing up.

Try a demo of Leawosoft Prof Media to copy the DVD i have had good success with the app with discs that have disc rot.

i have a few warner bros' cardboard snapper case from the early 200s, and those are one of the best quality discs i have. but mine is region 3, so i guess the quality and standard for these discs, even from the same studio, is not uniformed or properly standardized in all regions... 😞

i have experienced this with my 4 favorites dvds my dirty hairy 4 favorites dvds(other than the first one) freeze at certain parts my clint eastwood 4 favorites comedies also freeze i pirated all of these because i feel like i was ripped off. if i pay for a movie it should last. i shouldn't have to pay for another copy that will most likely rot.

Fun fact: If you own an original copy of something (such as you with your Dirty Harry dvds) it's 100% legal to download a "backup" for yourself, thus it _isn't_ "pirating" !
