'Mhnathan a' ghlinne seo - Women of this glen
The origin of this song is connected to the Massacre of Glencoe, in which a number of MacDonalds were killed by Campbell soldiers, despite the fact the MacDonalds had given the soldiers hospitality for many days and nights beforehand.
On the night before the massacre, a Campbell soldier tried to warn the MacDonalds of their impending doom. He was a piper, and played a particular tune, in the hope that somebody with the gift of "a’ chluas-chiùil" (the musical ear) would hear.
Those with this gift could hear the words behind the tune, when only the tune was being played. Fortunately, one such girl possessed the gift, and as a result, she and her family were saved.
---------------------
Women of this glen, it’s time for you to rise
It is I who rose early, it was you who needed it
They killed the shepherd, who was tending the sheep
The cattle have been stolen, and the men have been slaughtered
Black-haired John, sharp and black, driving the cattle
Women of this glen, it’s time for you to rise

Òran do Bhonapart - A song for Bonaparte Words written around 1815 by James Shaw (1758 - 1828 Bard of Loch Nell), when it was thought that Napoleon Bonaparte might invade the UK - there was talk of mobilising soldiers from all over the UK, including Argyll. Music by Sileas Sinclair (Oban Gaelic Choir music director) from the melody of a song sung by Norman MacLean and the melody of old Appalach...

The 'national anthem' of the Isle of Mull, in the Hebrides of Scotland. Words written in the 1840s, sung in Gaelic, sub-titled in English. Neither Linda (Belgian) nor Ian (English) speak Gaelic fluently - our apologies. One of our projects during the Coronavirus lock-down of March-April 2020, hoping to boost the morale of Mull's senior citizens, many of whom are native Gaelic-speakers.

We recently heard again two 'a cappella' songs by James Taylor, whose words really seemed to resonate in these strange times, so this is our tribute to key workers everywhere - Bless you XX ! The piece begins and ends with an extract from "Shed a little light" (1991) and includes "That Lonesome Road" (1981, co-written with Don Grolnick). Stay home, stay safe, stay strong.
Scarborough Fair / Canticle (music after 16 secs !)

Our interpretation of the 1966 classic by Simon & Garfunkel (the original ballad goes back until at least the 17th century). This interweaves two quite separate songs into a beautiful whole - ‘Scarborough Fair’ is left of screen, ‘Canticle’ is on the right.

The 800-year old text just glows with simple grace and a sense of wonder, beautifully captured by Morten Lauridsen, a living American composer, who wrote the music in 1994. Whatever you believe in, the Nativity remains a powerful symbol of the miracle of life. Ian adapted the arrangement to enable us to sing it. Many of the finest composers since the 15th century have also set this text to music.

Corfu Variations

On our first holiday together with Linda in Corfu in 1991, a musical idea around the first 5-note theme emerged which, after returning to Brussels, I worked out as piano variations. 30 years later, I've come back to it and re-arranged it to feature the Cor Anglais. It's simply a love letter to Linda - hope you like it.

A choral piece written by Ian, sung by Linda and Ian. It recreates the meeting in 563 AD between Saint Columba and Bridei MacMaelchon, King of the Picts. The words are inspired by 'Adiutor Laborantium', a poem dating from Iona at that time, probably written by Columba or soon after.
