Snowy Candle Lit Walk through Denali National Park / Winter Solstice 2024
After just getting done with a 3 day Backpacking trip, had to see more of the sled dogs! Then a candle-lit walk/snowshoe around Visitor Center set up by all the park Rangers! It was beautiful seeing 900 candles inside ice holders!

Last mile snowshowing of my backpacking trip. Mostly easy snow cover road, then to clean my truck off and change for the ride home. The trailhead to the main road started with a heavy 8 inches of snow and switched to 2-3 feet of lighter snow for the 7 miles off the mountain.

That scenery is breathtaking! What a beautiful hike - like hiking a dream! ;-) Thanks for sharing! 💙Terry and Terri
@@TerryX2Explore was a nice relaxing hike after 3 days backpacking haha! Wish I didnt take the poles and have to hold them the whole time
@@SuperdutyExplorer I don't like the poles either but they do help sometimes! ;-)
@@TerryX2Explore i use them on almost every hike for balance, past injuries in both legs... This was a level groomed trail, lots of people were walking tmit in boots even haha
Really amazing scenery! I love checking out the tent set up for camping in the snow. New sub from Arizona, Cheers!
I was amazed, so much more than I expected for my first time in Alaska! Hey Im currently planning a big road trip. Was thinking about Humphreys Peak in AZ in like 2 weeks! Have you done it?
@ no but it’s on my list! I did Kendrick peak right next to it and it was great. Enjoy!! There’s a great pizza place right next to humphreys called Fratellis.
@@weekendhikeraz love pizza, will have to try if I make it out there! Hopefully if I go for it weather stays clear for at least sunset haha
1.45 is a dream 🤩
The video really doesn't do justice to how pretty it was lol
@ it looks romantic! I would love to be there (but not alone). Do you like traveling on your own?
That's super cool! Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks for watching, down to my last alaska video to edit! Then to start packing for the last adventure of my season!
Oh man, I got cold just looking at the inside of your tent. Much respect!
Thanks man! This was my second trip with the tent and really liking it so far! Nice not having to worry about getting snow inside the tent at least haha
Thanks for sharing this three part adventure with us! My sled is gathering too much dust in my garage. I've got to get out and do something similar before the season is over. Thanks again!
Hey thanks for watching! Currently planning my last trip of my camping season, thinking a 2 week roadtrip stopping in CO, NM, and maybe AZ! Then safety training before summer construction in the midwest starts up...
Pretty awesome man! I definitely love my merino wool base layer in the bag at night. I like your camp setup and the floorless tent. Stunning scenery. Thanks for sharing your solo winter adventure in Denali National Park! Looking forward to day 3!
Thanks dude! Sweet, I'll have to pick up a set for sure! I love the tent for size/weight, and snow gets into a tent floor no matter how careful you are. Lol , this pitch was so hard, though... 3 feet a fuffy snow and then frozen ground... ended up pounding stakes into the ground as far as I could, then stepped watered snow around them to freeze in! Think it took close to 4 hours to get camp up, definitely nice having it set up night 2!
What are the chances of running into large mammals this time of year?
@deanmoilanen decent chance but didn't see any 😞 the bears should be sleeping but can wake up depending on weather. There were 2 wolf packs in the area, but I didn't see/hear them... Moose are what I was most worried about but all I seen were the tracks by camp.
Wow, talk abut a winter wonderland... Spectacular views! Thanks for sharing your amazing adventure! 💙Terry and Terri
@TerryX2Explore it was insanely pretty!! Was also my first hike in like 8 months, the struggle for the views was real!
Pretty cool man. You have a new subscriber. And, you have an epic beard as well! Be safe out there! Matt
@mattsmountainmadness hey, thanks dude! Definitely lost alittle length off the beard freezing on this trip lol
Wow, that takes some guts to backpack in those conditions! I'm guessing you couldn't have a fire because you're in a national park.
@hikingwheather definitely put all my experience to the test! Thankfully was a successful 5th back county trip haha! I could have had a fire i think, but no way to get to the wood. 2 plus fluffy feet of snow over a thin ice layer and 1-2 feet of snow under that... with sled i had enough gear to be comfortable to like -20 lol 😆 😂 glad it wasn't that cold though!
Cool video!
Thanks, definitely lucked out with mostly clear sky's!
Hey Glenn! Always nice to meet fellow explorers/creators/Wisconsinites! It's a bit frustrating that all the forestry campgrounds close in the winter! They are our favorites for camping... Love the one pot meals! ;-) The fondue tacos look good! The woods are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing! 💙Terry and Terri
Yeah same thing up in the U.P. Michigan in winter... I like remote camping but hard in winter without risking getting stuck!
What an amazing adventure!! I bet it was like a great wave in that cave, lol! Those views are awesome!!
@amyhoffmann6985 mountain veiws were insane, and cave definitely not what I was expecting! So so much better lol
@SuperdutyExplorer I can't say I'm not a bit jealous. My adventures pale in comparison. I'll take what I can get and live vicariously through those that adventure a bit further 😊
That was incredible! Thanks for sharing this.
@WallowaHikes 10x better than I was expecting it to be haha! Thanks for watching!
Negative 25??!? Ouch! The Northern Lights looked so eerie and awesome. Thanks for sharing.
@WallowaHikes yeah it was cold, thankfully 0 wind! I did regret not putting Bibs on though lol... thanks for watching, more videos from this trip coming in next few weeks! I'm slow at editing..
Of course another stop at the local REI! Because why wouldn't you? Those northern lights and that sunset over the river valley were freakin amazing!! I imagine the moments were so much more breathtaking in person!
@amyhoffmann6985 got food / white gas / 1x ice axe leash at REI lol... no room for first, can't fly with second. Last got lost in mail 2 weeks before trip sadly... yes pictures/video don't do justice!!! Was shocked this was first 2 of 9 days, and only got better from here!!!
@SuperdutyExplorer you know you've packed for damn near everything when you don't have room for MREs, I can imagine the TSA frowns upon traveling with white gas and I'm utterly shocked a package got lost in the mail during the holidays, lol. It looks like a fantastic trip!!
@amyhoffmann6985 at least i had room for the extra 3 meals I had for way home 😆 🤣 😂
Air snacks 😅
Oh man! I've been strongly considering a Porkies winter trip. It's quite the drive for me so I've been doing as much research as possible. Thinking something like a night at the yurt near the ski hill, hike to LOTC, camp somewhere past there, and take Govt Peak back to the xc ski trails and back up to the yurt for the final night. Would love to check out your itinerary/ trip log if you have one posted somewhere. Awesome vid, subbed!
@LoveatFirstHike if you have Instagram, ive got both my trips into the porkies on there. As for maps I'm sure they are still in garmin app.. First trip snowshowed like 17 miles in 2 days, from ski hill to LOTC mostly on snowmobile trail. Second trip (these videos) got to park a mile before LOTC. Hiked 5ish miles into government peak during snowstorm. Then snowshoe out took alot longer haha. I'm probably gonna start planning another trip up there for this winter yet.
The UP looks so awesome. I gotta make it up there some day! Subscribed
Thanks! I think I'm gonna go road trip up there this weekend! Haven't had the truck out camping since spring...
Spring is such a lovely time in the forest. There are so many beautiful elements in this video - the green of newly leafing trees, the storm, rainbow, birdsong and peepers. Very nice!
@hikingwheather thanks! Yeah the greens at my second stop were crazy!
Cool set up.
Thanks!! I'm glad it worked out as planned lol.. Just had it out on its second trip. Took a sled into Denali national park winter solstice for 2 nights. Video coming out soon!
Hi, I really like the video!! I was thinking about buying this tarp tent myself. I'm interested in wat pole you're using to pitch the tarp with? Friendly greetings from the Netherlands!
@skateyvesyt5368 From Amazon, seems like a good purchase. Brands say, Imgokaha... Seems more heavy duty then trekking poles and then could leave tent up to go for summit with poles
Omg! I love these videos, Glen. Im so happy you have these things for you.
Thanks! Editing is a struggle! Lol have 2 more videos that I need to finish... there was more time over winter break
@SuperdutyExplorer I'll be creeping. I'm going to watch some of your backpacking ones. You're living my off-season dream.
I'm your number 34 subscriber. I've been waiting for this super duty camper build. I'm dreaming to do Ford truck camping someday too. Pray for me please. Good luck to your UA-cam channel.
Thank you!! Loving it so far, may plans too come yet! But everything takes time!.. good luck to yourself!
What a hike bro!! For a second there I thought you were lost
This first day wasn't too bad, the following day I kept a much closer eye on my watch/gps haha!
I'll have to work on my camera angles next time!! 😂 most shots pointed down more than I thought they'd be!...
If your meal is too soupy, I think they call that "Type 2 Hydration."
I didn't know it had peanuts.... that was the worst part about the whole thing lol 😆 eating it was definitely still way better than carrying it out would have been
I’d never have a tent without an attached floor. Mice and bugs and little critters are not welcome. 🦝🐇🐿️🦨🪶🦔
It's mainly for winter camping so no bugs! Mice aren't stopped by much if they smell food as well 😞 they make a bug net/floor insert for it but it weighs more than the tent/pole weigh. My first ever time without a floor, in the snow you really don't notice!!
Hiked there many times. Love it.😊
My first ever trip was there last year!!! Could definitely tell I learned alot in a year with how well this one went!
Two of the worst things about winter backpacking: 1) there will always be condensation on the inside and outside of your tent and 2) packing up. I have yet to experience the third: using a wag bag. 😆
Haha!! Yeah condensation is a battle, I've only winter backpacked though so it's the only life I know! If more than 1 night, get boiling water in nalgenes and slowly dry out before packing up and when getting to next camp... Best things about winter backpacking- 1- no people 2- no bugs!
Bears are hibernating
@stephenalexander6721 there was actually a few tracks down by the lake at start of the start of the hike!!
Good times, enjoyed the snow. Sitting here in the PNW hoping we get some more❤❤ keep it up!
For sure, thank you! The weather for the eclipse has me wondering what to do next week... had a trip to Texas and then mountains in New Mexico and Colorado planned.... now looking like I have to go northeast if I want to see it... may skip and go to the mountains or try the northeast mountains... crazy weather this year so you never know when the last snow storm will be for ya!
@@SuperdutyExplorer feel ya there! The thing about those is you can travel oh so far, only for it to be a cloudy day, … or a perfect day for eclipse! We caught one here in the northwest I believe in 2017, total eclipse at 100%, absolutely unreal. Temps dropped, animals stopped, incredible. Either way, you’ll have a wonderful adventure no matter what you do! As long as it’s in nature!! 💚💚
Definitely challenging route finding with the fresh snow. And the bear tracks would have really spooked me!
Never did take a head phone out... The tracks were a good 3 miles from where I camped, and only ones I seen both days... the following day and paid alot more attention to where I was going and cut like 1/3 mile off return trip! Lol
Gorgeous overlook! I'm sure the snowfall made thimgs pretty exciting!
It was but by the time I got back to this spot the following afternoon, between 10-18 inches fell!! So the 5.5 miles was a bit rough on the way out but totally worth it!! I do complain alot in the upcoming videos though haha 😂😂
@@SuperdutyExplorer , I'm sure that was some Type 2 fun. Looking forward to seeing it! 😄
Its about time someone built a longbed.
It is a bit of a bear on trail but worth it in comfort! At some point a lift should help, won't have to turn around as much haha
looks in video your kinda tall? hilleberg is awesome, but there are a lot of drawbacks, especially for tall folks. your wieght will drop each trip out.
About 6 foot but use 6'6" sleeping bags. MSR is having a 40% off sale, so I picked up the frontrange for $260! If I don't like it I'll save up for the $1200 hilleberg 😁
the msr is a good winter choice and you'll loose some weight there. soft nalagene bottles are great for winter especially if you put a coozie on them.
I started out heavy with old gear too. Nowhere near that heavy. After my first short 76 mile thru hike I decided to gradually reduce weight so I could hike farther faster and enjoy it more. I updated the heaviest items first: tent and backpack and instantly dropped about 10 lbs. You can feel an extra 2 lbs of water climbing a mountain, so 10 lbs makes a huge difference. Check out the Durston Gear tents. They hold up great to bad weather, aren’t that expensive and are very popular with thru hikers because of the light weight and durability. I use layers for hiking, a rain jacket over top if very cold. I wear a puffy only in camp. That would allow you to drop one puffy. I would drop the Nemo pad because the Thermarest will keep you warm without it. I have the same pad and have never gotten cold, so far. I have taken it down to 0 degrees with a 15 degree sleeping bag. Since you are carrying a chair you could drop the sit pad but I would drop the chair and use the pad instead. You will be able to drop a lot of weight if not actually winter camping. Replace the Nalgenes with light smart water bottles and use a lite cheap stove and small cookpot if you don’t need to boil snow for water. BSR stove on Amazon and Walmart has cheap pots. If not desert camping you can drop the extra water bladders. I would update the heavy rain gear as fast as you can. You shouldn’t need the extra weight of a bib if you have a good jacket, just getting decent light weight rain pants will drop a lot of weight. You can use a ziplock for a wallet with just a credit card and ID in it. You don’t need cash on trail. When you get your gear dialed in you won’t need the heavy giant pack to carry it and you won’t need the heavy chair to rest in, so will be able to drop even more weight.
Thank you! I only have this setup at the moment, so I'm useing work gear and stuff I find on sale... rather spend money traveling vs buying more gear atm... alot of the gear wasn't needed for the badlands trip but took anyway to test myself and find my limit... yes, normally I would only start with 2-3 liters of water.. also being my 3rd trip its still learning my gear to be faster on the harder adventures coming. Getting ready for my last trip on this off season coming up early April. Since it's 2 mountain ascents with alot of elevation, I'll definitely be dropping alot of stuff... then 7 months of the summer road construction life!...
9:38 21 ounces =595 g
Yeah
8:49 17 ounces=482 g
Yip
Nice video! (For metric people at 7:53 63 ounces =1 kg 786 g)
Thank you!! I should update my lighterpack.com and post to make it easier for people to see ounces/grams more clearly
Looks like an amazing place! I would love to check out South Dakota sometime. Great video. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! Definitely a cool place to visit when you can!
Beautiful views at the badlands. That skull was a find!!
Definitely made for some cool pictures! And got me to take a break 30 minutes early haha
Wow, great video! The badlands are gorgeous! Cool truck setup.
Been there a few times, this was first time backpacking it though! Next video I'm gonna work on is the truck build/Setup! Going though the build footage to see if any is usable lol. Just set a gopro on time lapse while working and got some pictures..
I have used the MSR Front Range practicing snow camping in my backyard, and it was fairly straightforward to set up. Can't speak to it's performance in bad weather, but seems like a pretty solid pyramid tent. Best wishes in lightening your load, you must be pretty tough to pack around 75 lbs!
Well thankfully 15lbs of water can be dropped for most trips! Haha, I wasn't too worried but... there ended up being alot more elevation than I was expecting though! Still easier than having snowshoes on all day! Edit- Construction Life makes a guy strong I've found out haha! I struggled first trip of the year, 3 days in the great smokey mountains. It was first time having a pack on in like 8 months 😂 that 55lbs kicked my ass alot more somehow!!
Oh, yeah, water is brutal to carry!
That weight is insane, Folks walking the Appalachian Trail try to keep their weight around 25-30lbs. Mine was 25lbs last year with 1L of water and three days worth of food. I am impressed if you can haul that weight. Best regards
@chaosncheckt9356 it was a little bit exciting in the scrabbling areas! Haha... I was useing it at a training exercise, need to learn to embrace the suck during the hard parts. I have 2 mountain accents planned for April. 45-50lbs with snowshoes gonna be alot harder than this I'm guessing.
That's a lot of water to carry man. Props to you for that! Muddy hiking is rough out there too.
I drank too much water this first day to fast... trying to get weight off my back but then didn't have enough water for hot chocolate the first night 😫
Sweet trip! And you're on a roll uploading these. Awesome stuff :)
Thank you, thank you, I can't believe i finally posted! Now to start working on the next project 😀
Looks like a pretty great spot
For being a 1200-1500 foot walk from the truck, definitely can't complain 👌 think I've sat in that exact area for sunset 3 different years haha
Wow these views are insane. That solitude looks awesome!
It's was pretty special being only one in the wilderness the whole weekend 😀 I was surprised/happy with how well the video from my old phone turned out ha!
Dude this is epic! Proud of you for your first couple uploads!!! Those sunrise and sunset shots are awesome. Can't wait to check out Badlands for myself one day!
Even if no one likes it, easier way to show family. I just get head nodding while telling stories haha. Hopefully gonna get next part uploading later tonight...
Amazing views!
Views get better in next videos, but I don't think this sunset can be beat!
@SuperdutyExplorer I'm sure they're amazing but barely capture the beauty of seeing it in person. Good for you for taking the adventures!
