Primaris Ezekiel! + How to sculpt closed robes - Dark Angels tutorial
They forgot about Ezekiel! The major DA characters got a primaris re-make recently (even the upstart Belial), but old Zeke has been left in the cold... This could not stand, so I made a primaris Ezekiel myself! I made a video on open and split robes a while ago, but for my recent Primaris glow-up of Ezekiel I made closed robes. I converted a new Ezekiel from a standard primaris intercessor by re-posing the legs, removing some bulk and then folding some capes around the model. Here I will show you the results!
Time for another tutorial, but I'm also showing off the model I made.

And they add a ton of character to your miniature, not to mention saving you from freehand painting them on later! In this video I'll be taking you through the steps of sculpting both flat and rounded blood dropl...
Horus Heresy Dark Angels: all about Armour Plates and Hooded Skulls - sculpting tutorial

I made a Horus Heresy era Dark Angel and there's a couple of things the DA love around that time: armour plates (preferrably Mk3), wings, and (hooded) skulls. So, let's make a couple of those! In this video I show you a recent model I made of a 30k Dark Angel Praetorian and the bits that went into it, as well as show you how to sculpt the armor plates and make a hooded skull. Enjoy! first robe was actually sick! bet you can fill it with sprues & rubble, sculpt feet under it and smack a leftover torso on it!
yeah definitely! It's still here on my desk, chances are I will use it for something else. I just didn't like it too much on this figure, it messed up the shape of the mini too much to my tastes.
Where’s the sword from
from the old DA upgrade sprue. The small, non-primaris one.
Thanks for leaving the unsuccessful stuff in there as well. Sometimes we can learn as much from that as from just watching you succeed.
Yeah there's always a bit of a balance I think. I left out much more unsuccessful stuff than there's actually in the video now 😂. But the difference between the first failed try and the final successful one is interesting I think.
Showing off your painting skills.
@@escherleduc9567 I can paint decently, it’s just that I don’t get a lot of enjoyment out of it. Feels more like a chore than a nice pastime…
@ Exactly the same.
@@escherleduc9567 Maybe we should just outsource the painting step! 😂
@ 😂 You can’t waste the money. You are good at painting. I’m going to do a huge step by step batch paint of everything I want to paint so everything gets done at the same time.
@@escherleduc9567 yeah that's a good idea. I can never remember how I made a specific color so painting multiple miniatures in the exact same color scheme is too much of a hassle :). Painting everything at the same time saves you that problem at least
Great pose.
@@escherleduc9567 thanks!

@jorgenpinoy1724 hartelijk dank!
Do you have trouble with painting ? I’m painting my guys (Dark Angels) and I’m not bad at painting but my expectations clash with how much time it takes and I’m feeling abit impatient. What do you think I should do ?
@@escherleduc9567 I have the same thing for sure… building and converting no problem, painting can feel like a chore… I’m not sure what to do about it except change expectations. Either sit there for a looooooong time to get it absolutely perfect, or settle for OK. Proper brushes do make a lot of difference though!
That Primaris Intercessor looks so good.
Thanks! He got a bit of an upgrade :)
@@dehoofdwerkerThe one with the servo skull, robe and banner. Looks really good. If only my painting lived up to my conversions.
@escherleduc9567 oh that one! Yeah that’s Captain UA-cam! :) i used him for my tutorials for quite a while, and I finally decided to properly paint him as well!
@ He looks amazing. When you are finished with your Dark Angels Army please show it. Make sure your photos are across the board on every platform.
@escherleduc9567 yeah these are all commissions so I won’t have them all together unfortunately! I can always edit them all into one photo though 😊
“Mr Ezekiel”.
Exactly. And not a syllable less.
that looks so good! that sword is crazy with the details on it.
Thank you! It took a bit of effort to get those on there :). I recorded that as well, might make another video out of that bit.
On last tip: use a drill bit that is slightly larger than the pin (e.g. 1.1mm drill bit for 1mm pin), so you have room for the glue and/or room for micro adjustments when putting the two parts together.
Those are all some great tips! I do notice that with plastic miniatures you don't really need really stiff/sturdy pins, it's more giving them a good connection than structural strength. But finding metal wire can be a pain as you say. I think I got this 0.5 one from a random mix from the local hobby shop and it turned out to be that thickness by chance. Finding actual thicknesses that you are looking for can be tough.
@@dehoofdwerker indeed. It's actually easier to find the drills bits that match the metal wires you have, than the other way around.
7:04 I actually do all my drilling with a power drill from Makita (the ones you use for construction work...) 🤣 It might sound strange, but I actually get really good results using a mechanical drill like that. It takes .5mm drills just fine; actually better than my hand drill. Ep 48 of the Paint Perspective Podcast (here on UA-cam) has a hilarious bit about a mechanical drill like I use versus a hand drill. Great podcast!
Paperclips are a great source for pins too. 0.5 pins are not easy to find, especially not sturdy ones. However, the pins you use for sowing (the ones that come in a pincushion for example) turn out to be .5mm and are really strong. Edit: be careful trying to bent stronger pins like I suggested using above, because instead of the metal bending, you will snap the plastic part in two. So ideally you use the bendy wire like you showed of in this video when you know you want to bent the pin and use the stronger stuff otherwise.
4:20 alternatively you can put blue tack on the part that has not been drilled yet and press the parts together. Afterwards there will be a impression in the blue tack that you can use as a guide for your pilot hole.
Ah yeah, that's a good one too!
How did you get those sick bolters bru?
Those are ancient plastic bolters from second edition! I think you'll have to look second hand somewhere now, or find someone who 3d prints them
Some of you tutorials like the cloth and this one are very usable for Nighthaunt mini's. You tend to focus on 30k/40k stuff. Have you thought about doing something with the fantasy side of the hobby as well?
I've looked into the minis a couple of times but I can't get myself to actually buy and build them for some reason. I'm just more into sci-fi than fantasy I guess. I would like to use a couple of them for 40k conversions though, I think there's some good opportunities there.
@dehoofdwerker a classic is Nighthaunt for Adeptus Mechanicus. Seems right up your alley. You can go ham with wires and stuff.
@@Wijkert yeah I actuall have a couple of them, the old push-fit ones you could get for 10 euros or something. Never got around to use them... There's an AdMech project on the horizon, so who knows!
What did you use to make the shoulder pads
The original ones you get with the kit, rotated. And then some plasticard. You can see in the video how I made them.
Thanks
The paint job on the shells themselves turned out really well! Love the chimney too, both how it looks and how it was painted.
Thank you! I tried to get close to the original colors of the shells, even if it seems a bit overkill (why paint it in the first place then... :) )
@dehoofdwerker I remember you mentioned this in the video and you were right: if everything is painted, it will go together much better.
@@Wijkert yeah I've tried skipping it before but it will really look weird.

ah yes sculpting+coffee best combo 👍 u making em look way too easy Rly makes me wanna get me some greenstuff to try. (But gotta finish this batch of milliput first 😂)
@xxxxx9xxxxx9 yes there’s not much better than that! 😁😁. I’m not a big fan of milliput for sculpting, it’s too course for me. I hear the combination of the two mixed together works the best, but I haven’t tried that yet…
I agree with your feedback on your own painting. If the background was a lot darker, the main figure would have stood out more; the screens as well, because you would have been able to sell the OSL in a better way. I was thinking maybe you could have put a spotlight on the character and made the outside of the diorama very dark and only when getting close to her making the environment light up.
@Wijkert yeah that’s a good idea too! For some reason this video isn’t working either, I think it’s the same problem. I’ll try some more photo’s with different lighting to see whether I can sell it better, it looks way better in person than on camera. Probably the depth helps there.
Your painting is getting better and better, but you clearly excel at the sculpting part. Have you ever thought about leaving them unpainted to be able to show of your sculpting and conversion work? For display I mean.
@Wijkert many thanks! Yeah painting really isn’t the part I’m interested in, which makes it quite hard to focus and spend too much time on it. I always take high quality photos of the finished sculpts before painting too, they’re all up on my website. I do like them better painted though … 😊
This feels like it's doable to do myself. Thanks Mikal!
@Wijkert it really is! I’m currently working on another video on closed robes, should be up later this week!
