Subscribe for Weekly Videos! Today I review Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk. This is the first of many Palahniuk books to come. If you're in for a creepy read this is an intense story. Twitter - @Barline_Shift Facebook - philip.lanz.526 Goodreads - www.goodreads.com/user/show/10988818-philip
I’m Japanese. There is no review of this book in Japanese . I enjoy your review, thanks!
@@YokoYoko-z4l thank you it’s been a long time since I’ve reviewed books it’s nice to see people still like these videos.
Awesome Review. But forgot to edit (the background) Awesome 😂😂
Life gets busy but your still reading thats a good thing because your making time for yourself xx❤
I know people hate the last story but it's my favorite in the book. Such a cool book and how terrifying is the cover when you turn the lights out? Woke up in the middle of the night to that next to my face and freaked out
The last 70 pages were pretty awesome.
The “Miracle” I thought was gonna be something a lot cooler than what he said on the microphone lol
This book scarred my brain for life!!!
This is next on my TBR! Can’t wait
Toward the end of the book, there was a scene when Abbot Zerchi was crushed by the rubble, and then the bicephalous Mrs. Grales and Rachel approached him. What do you make of it? Was it Zerchi's hallucination or was Rachel a being of God with "preternatural gifts of Eden"? I keep thinking of that scene. And what of Benjamin the pilgrim/ Lazarus?
yea. Honestly I want to believe that the interaction between Mrs. Grales, well Rachel and the Abbot were real. it really kinds of rounds out the character. well i hope it was. and old ben/Lazarus was such a cool idea. I didn't realize it until he went to the abby and claimed that Thon Taddeo wasn't the messiah. such a cool usage of that character. and linking the three parts together.
Lazarus was such an interesting character that I wanted a book about his adventures and his search for the Messiah. On another note, When I first read the first few chapters, I thought that the whole book was in itself satirical, especially with the issue on the canonization of Leibowitz. I am a catholic myself and I find it hilarious. Then when I got to the middle of the book, it got way more interesting. It touches a lot of moral gray areas that had me literally put the book down at times to think the ideas through and digest them. Just glad I found this book.
I saw a lot of pontential in this book; strange characters, back stories, weird items. Somehow it all fizzled out. The ending was disappointing and it did not leave you wondering about the end or the characters final actions.
Do more book reviews!
Fine.
@@VanguardDrums you don’t have anything recent it’s all 4-5 years old 😂
@@jazmynesimington7773 my bad. Life kinda got in the way but I’ve been meaning to get back into it. I guess your comment is a good kick in the butt. Any suggestions?
@@VanguardDrums horror books? Or underrated books that you liked? Or just books that you’ve recently read. Also, I am reading haunted right now I’m 20 percent in and it’s not gory yet I’m patiently waiting for it to pick up
@@jazmynesimington7773 oh boy. Just you wait.
The Shroud of Turin is a Death Mask. Also there are a few other indications of masks of death if you look a little harder.
Roommate in the background. Lol
Good nuts though
You need to read all of Chucks books! You'll go nuts
Question for you? I just bought this! Same copy I think u have and my copy starts at page 5! Is this right?
They dont all commit suicide.
I honestly thought the book wasn't good. Not mediocre, just not good
The shining is one of my favorites. Do you plan on doing more reviews anytime soon?
I thought it was awful. I guess we're supposed to like it because it's so different...but it took up most of your time on a storyline that was totally meaningless.
How cute is he 😍😍
my girlfriend n i just divulged reading Haunted loved it so we really appreciated this! What is your top5 favorite stories in Haunted & characters? (Is like to see everyone's aver not just the creator of this video) Neway mine are: #1Obsolete,#2TheNightmareBox, #3Slumming,#4Footwork, & #5EvilSpirits My top5 fave characters are: Mr./Brandon Whittier, Mrs. Clark, Mother Nature, Earl of Slander, & Reverend Godless! Such a great fucking book! We would love to see this as a film if dove right it'd be amazing. And so lastly to anyone out there reading this: If you could pick anyone to direct & write or/ produce this adaptation of the book into a film who would u choose?
Spiral out, Keep going.
Am I the first to comment? That’s wrong. Book reviewers apparently aren’t the most actively searched for. Also add (spoilers) to your captions.
Major improvement! Good job. Applause 👏
Also first off try doing a regular background that has fun things to look at. Also do your thing and own it. You look nervous and unsure about what you’re doing.
Totally.
You sound a little weird about sex. Maybe not convey that in your next video. Which I don’t mind. It’s gonna be a great Christmas gift this year ! Good luck with your channel. You’re awkward. Bye
Lol
The book has a story about young boys injuring themselves through creative new ways of jerking off. He's not being weird about sex
I’ll disagree about the ending. If you got your “fill” during the climatic sequences then you should be happy. As I was with it.
As was I! Haunted is one of my favorite & Chuck P.'s best books in my opinion. The ending not only tied together the thematic conceptual elements but totallys summed everything up well with a fitting ending n hreat plot twists. How could u even end it any different? The whole narrative structure is a subversion if classic plot story telling n creative exploration of what a narrative can be not to mention the many roles n evolution of story telling itself, so y would ne1 expect a climactic ending? That diesbt make sense. It already had enough drama for crying out loud ppl. This girl is right on i agree with her n applaud her intelligence, perspective, n taste.
My last name is Hodges
The books pages are also larger than its cover like the house is larger inside than out.
I have to disagree with it's a great story. There is one HUGE issue with this situation. Big Jim Remy is the most obvious (I hate to call him a villain) bad guy ever written. How ANYONE in that town would be sitting back and watching while a used car salesman takes over the town and tells the pussy of a deputy now sheriff how to run the dept. A bunch of teenagers with attitudes made deputies and no one in the town bats an eye? Brenda Perkins and the people with the facts of what Jim has been up to are morons who, "wait until the right time," to get the Vader file out to the rest of the town... What? Why? And the speed with which the towns people turn on Barbie is totally unrealistic. I got all the way through it, but I found myself getting increasingly tired of reading how a fat Jesus freak kept pulling the wool over "everyone's" eyes, or how people were so "afraid to stand up to him because he pulls so much weight."
Batman Laughed I recently talked to another constant reader who said that they liked that about the book because its surreal and absurd, however its an appropriate analogy to our current politial climate. I am shareing theyr veiw with no comment of my own but maybe that point of view may help you appriciate the quirkyness of Big Jim.
Just finished it. Also have that copy of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell
Great down to earth easy understandible review! Thanks! definitely subscribed! recently finished the Stand, took me allot of my life to finish it, very upset at the ending, went and looked into King and found he sometimes has a hard time with endings, as i felt with the Stand. this one has a good ending, as you say, i got a kindle deal , for end of watch, have not read it yet, thought i needed to read the trilogy, but going to start reading the end of watch, thanks! going to start reading it right away
I'm starting this book right now, and I'm a HUGE Palahniuk fan. And I just related with every expression you had about his writing 😂
Awesome book, great review.. Have you gotten into Danielewski's The Familiar yet?
AppleblossomM I have read the 1st but Tanner is really into it
I would wait on that. At present, it looks as if he's not going to finish it. Apparently it hasn't sold well enough for the publisher to continue through the entire planned 27-book run.
Can you do a video on your favourite authors?
Sure can, I always appreciate video ideas. I'll get on that right after I post my review of Justin Cronin's trilogy.
Your opening is great
I'm glad you're back :') and that your life is going really well. As for the focus issues can you lock it? If that makes sense?
yea I did that on the next video that I've recorded. I'm a few months rusty but it's coming back now, hahahaha.
give names of conspiracy books...
Cold Case Kennedy: A New Investigation Into the Assassination of JFK, really loving JFK assassination since reading 11/22/63. Blue Planet Project - An Inquiry Into Alien Life Forms, defiantly s book that I have had to go over a few times. and as I've said in the video Bloodline of the Holy Grail: the Hidden Lineage of Jesus Revealed. its good so far, I wanted to get a hold of the book: Holy Blood, Holy Grail by Michael Baigent but I haven't been able to get a copy of it yet.
i like you! more videos plz.😁
no problem.
I discovered your channel during the time you were away and subscribed incase you ever came back. Good choice it seems. I'm half way through Harry Potter 4 as well, never went through the phase you did with the series but I've not read it since it initially came out so it's nice to read it with older and somewhat wiser eyes
destructionsnakepit you have made my day, I've been debating making more videos and you have reafirmed my desire to continue making videos. I hope I can keep the quality increasing for my friendly neighborhood viewers like you.
Dorothy could have just clicked her heals blah blah...... so do you think it was more about what was learned throughout the journey was needed to produce a simple ending? It doesn't sound like it from your review, but just thought I'd ask.
I would agree that sometime a simple ending is needed to properly close out a story, e.g. The Dark Tower. However, I believe that the ending was a bit lazy. These are my opinions, you may feel differently.
Hey can you do a review on Knit the male connoisseur by yaseer abdullahi, a really good read for such a small book, the first book of the series.
I really enjoy your reviews, man.
You were correct on your assessment. The book title means the house made up of book pages.
Thanks, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who connected those two things
I've only ever seen the movie by Stanley Kubrick, but I hear Stephen King hated it and the story was done again as a TV miniseries staring Steven Weber. Maybe you might want to check that out. Also, fair warning, about that documentary you mentioned, (If you want to go in blind, don't read the next bit, but I thought you might want to know) the documentary is more about Stanley Kubrick than it is about Stephen King, It's just conspiracy theories about the messages Kubrick put into his movie.
i actually just bought that version. unfortunately I was looking for the Kubrick version but, nevertheless, it was decent. There's a documentary "214" on the Kubrick version, its a pretty good watch.
Sorry it took me so long to get to this, I was the one who asked you to do it! so glad I'm finally able to watch it. :) If you haven't yet, you should pick up Lullaby, Diary, or Damned/Doomed. Funny story, the Pool filter story, I'm trying not to give too much away, was toured around the country and Chuck read it live to audiences and it had a body count because people were passing out left and right and having to be wheeled off in stretchers.
I've read damned and I have doomed, but I've been a bit out of it lately, just had a kid so he's taking up much of my time but, seeing someone show interest ill jump back on here again, thanks for the motivation.
Congrats on the kid! From that news, you may want to skip Lullaby for a while. I do love to motivate people so I'm glad I did that, but I think we all understand that kids come first.
Lol awesome! Also Lullaby & Diary arw my other 2 faves besides this & fight club obviously.
I just finished reading Haunted and it was great! I've read a bunch of his other stuff and by far my favorite is Invisible Monsters. I definitely recommend reading that. Rant is also really good.
hmm ill have to pick it up, thanks!
Hey there! Just letting you know that I have tagged you in my Currently Reading Tag video :D
I definitely agree about the ending feeling rushed. He seems to do this in more and more of his recent novels. I also watched the tv show. There were many differences so you were spot on when you said that if you watched it you wouldn't be spoiled. Great review :)
I didn't quite finish the show but I get far enough in to dislike it. haha I quit near the end of season 2
I watched the whole thing but hated the last season. I was so relieved when it was canceled.
Just wanted to let you know I tagged you in The Rapid Fire Book tag today :)
Answered some of my questions about this book. Thanks.
thank you. and no problem what were your questions?
Mainly, was curios how it compared to the TV show. Sounds like the book is a better experience. Thanks.
defiantly a better experience.
My Dad loves the Dresden Files but funnily enough he's never actually told me any of the plots so it was good to find out what they're actually about. I like the whole religious symbolism thing, I get kicks out of books that make me think a bit harder so I might have to give these a go. Thanks for the review!
no problem I think you'll enjoy them.
