Just found your channel. You are spot on. I was going to put my channel to bed but do you want to come and explain to folks the benefits of self-reliance small-scale ect? I love your style and channel content. Blessings from the UK

How do you use rabbit fat?
You are very elaborate with your words! It leads to better descriptions, well done.
Thanks!

Remember, Hitler was a vegan. It’s true.
My motivation comes from wanting to have control over the lives of the animals I eat. I was vegetarian for many years because I hate factory farms. I eventually gave up being vegetarian, but I feel so much better dispatching my own animals. I'm totally fine with people eating meat, I'm not okay with unnecessary suffering. I was able to dispatch quail (as you mentioned) so this is a next step. Thank you for this video and for giving it the seriousness it deserves. 💕
A lot of us have a similar story! I think most people would agree factory farms an abomination, but relatively few people are willing to do anything about it. Thank you!
@@westmeadowrabbits No, thank you! 🥰 I appreciate the supportive reply and the education you offer in your videos
best part of growing rabbits is they are best grown with chicken. chicken on the ground level and rabbits in the second level in their cages. both on deep litter bedding
That's definitely a good system!
Lol. Chill. Tractors, brush hogs, flails are fine. You're giving millennials a worse name.
I'm not a millennial! Also heavy equipment is a tool which can be fine when used appropriately. When I worked on a farm, we weren't going to spend 3 months making hay with a scythe, for example. But all tools have impacts that people should be aware of, and when used inappropriately, they create a lot of preventable problems. Pretty much every day I see people using heavy equipment that have no idea what they are doing, and this video is an example.
its funny we cant show meat processing yet the media can show people lighting themselves on fire for 10 min watching them burn alive for months on end such irony aint it.
Don't get me started . . .
I really love this new zealand breed, i wonder how to ship it here in the Philippines... Really love to breed this breeds.
I wish I could ship them but it would be CRAZY expensive and difficult.
Ultra processed foods are poisoning people in a alarming way. Homesteading is the way to go. Most of the fear mongering about dangers of raising our own food is propaganda propagated by big food
And people play right into it!
Would 100% alfalfa pellets along with timothy/orchard grass hay be a good diet for rabbits?
It would cover the bases, but most commercial pellets have a added vitamins and minerals. They also balance the protein ratio which is SUPER important! If you feed to much alfalfa to bucks or does who aren't breeding, they can build up calcium in their bladder and die.
I’m interested in the cages you build. You said in the video you might sell them and ship them flat with the j clips. Is that still a possibility?
I'm hoping to offer it in the winter of this year. I had a few things come up in my personal life that has been taking a lot of my time. When ready, I'll have them on my website www.westmeadowrabbits.com.
looks like he got some jordans on lol
What about acorns?
I wouldn't recommend for rabbits.
Appreciate your last five minutes!!!
Thank you thank you for your videos and advice. We have done rabbits for a couple years now, but pretty poorly. We haven’t been super consistent in breeding, our does have gotten overweight and breeding has been difficult. I stumbled on your channel looking for help with rabbit health and am excited to work with our breeding stock and get this part of our homestead a little more useful. We did get 12 rabbits in the freezer this year off of two does but we should definitely have been further than that by now, so thank you thank you for your advice and help
Glad to have you here! I'd say consistent breeding is one of the most important things you can do with your rabbits, so my advice is always fewer does that are consistently bred when starting out!
Chickens for eggs, rabbits for meat.
Correct answer!
The biggest problem is that sacrificing a rabbit, which is a cute fluffy boi is very sad, I'd have to mentally prepare for a chicken, rabbits can be a lot harder...
Fair enough 😂
How much black locust can you give before toxicity becomes a problem?
This is a topic that I'm currently writing an article on my Patreon about. I'll be making a video on it this winter as well, but long story short, if you are free feeding hay, and your rabbits aren't starving they'll know when to stop eating it.
You sold me on the 24 inch rule.
@@ExploreAmerica Glad to here it! It's only slightly more expensive but it makes a big difference for your rabbits. Plus it looks better to customers and visitors.
I got meat rabbits and just breed them for my first time. Im feeding nutrina 16 percent. I dont want to buy the 18 percent feed because its expensive and i already have 16. Will i be ok or shouldi get the 18
@@isaaccutlip5815 16 is fine, but you'll get more meat and faster growth if you feed 18 to growing kits and mothers with litters. Adult bucks only need 16, and does without litters are also fine with it.
@@westmeadowrabbits OK thanks
A few chickens wouldn’t hurt, since rabbits only give eggs during Easter… 😃
I say raise both!
😊
only one reason to pick chickens over rabbits... EGGS.
Is rommaine lettuce good fir meat rabbit
It's fine to feed them! It doesn't have a ton of nutrients, but they like it.
❤ Subscribed. Your videos are an Oasis in a desert of videos directed at 'pet' rabbits.
I have tons of banana leaves, any chance rabbits enjoy them?
I don't have bananas in my area, but I've heard they like them!
@@westmeadowrabbits The fruits only come every few months. But I have to cut banana leaves every day. Thank you for responding. Your videos answer more questions of mine than 99% of the of the other YT videos. I will check before feeding, but for clarification it the leaf or fruit you have heard of them enjoying? I am geeking out you wrote back! Thanks😇
@@andypanda4756 Happy to help! I've seen them eat the fruit and I've heard of people feeding the leaves. I wouldn't recommend feeding fruit a lot, but they should do fine with the leaves.
@@westmeadowrabbits That is good news! Free forage forever! I'm surounded by natural mango/banana jungle. So it's all organic, we don't need to use pesticides or fertilizers. Very bunny safe.
❤ Does fresh-cut Napier need to be dried before feeding to rabbits?
Most likely not, but don't feed too much at once.
I love your presentation style. I clearly need a copy of "Beyond the Pellet". I live in Tropical Thailand and want to raise rabbits for fertillzer from their manure. I grow lots of organic Napier grass. Can I feed rabbits JUST Napier grass? What suppliments or other foods, would I be required or suggested to combine with a Napier-based diet? I am on less than a shoestring budget, so I am searching for the MINIMUM amount of pellet/whatever suplimentation. A pure forage diet would be optimal, we have lots of space and year-round great weather. Note: Thai people think of rabbits like a dog or cat. NOBODY (but me) will eat them here. So only breeding to expand the colony at 1st and then just maintaining a nest of 20 rabbits maximum. It's the urine and poop I'm after.
I've met a few people form Thailand now who do it! You would need to feed more than one species of plant for them to have a balanced diet. I'm not very familiar with plants in the tropics, but doing a custom diet can be a bit complicate. Here's a good book on the subject: www.amazon.com/Beyond-Pellet-Feeding-Rabbits-Naturally/dp/1493654055
That was fantastic. Much better than my reaction to this sort of objection.
I found rabbits to be expensive with all the hay they eat, and waste. Chickens can forage for most of the food, or at least half.
I feed all hay in purpose built hay feeders which cuts down dramatically on waste. In my climate, chickens can only forage all/most of their food for four months a year at most. And chicken feed costs a lot more than hay!
some people avoid fats, because they have been brainwashed to do so, and you can see signs rabbit starvation.
I raise both.
Me too!
Awsome bud,The fat is in the skin of the rabbit.👍👍👍👍
I just want to say that im throughly impressed at your response rate. 3 yrs ago and you responded. 1 yr ago and you responded too. I appreciate your dedication to your craft and community. New subscriber here eager to devour your content to see how I could maybe add meat rabbits into my familys life. Also this video is incredibly under-liked, I appreciate your concise and well thought through points that take into consideration both sides with equal measure. Natural/colony vs for sustainability/consumption. Thank you for your insights ❤
Thanks for subscribing! I think I just responded to another one of your comments too lol.
Thank you for your content. Ive been really wanting to get into meat rabbits and I currently live in michigan, so conditions are similar for sure. Ty
Thanks for watching! Don't be afraid to jump in!
Mine take a lot longer because l enjoy their presence & they mine. I talk to them, pet them, feed them treats, like fresh plucked grass, clover flowers, sweet potato leaves, vegetables, sunflower seeds. Rabbits are smart, sentient & loving animals.
I enjoy my rabbits too, but this is a channel about raising rabbits as livestock. . .
I stroke each one at a minimum of 20 strokes nose to tail twice a day if I'm rushed. On weekends I spend hours just sitting in the barn with them. I never knew rabbits were so therapeutic!!!❤
If you invest more into infrastructure the rabbits will have lots of babies all on their own. An alternative, is to allow for a lesser quality breeding stock, knowing that it’s for food and will not be sustained, while you are building the high-quality housing you need. And then you can segregate eat and build a new population. Rabbits are like bananas they grow in bunches.
What material should i for when making rabbits cage
We have whole playlist on rabbit housing! ua-cam.com/play/PLuNkGES_QLQCS3RRSBmsbSHK-4hhjUgtY.html
Can you explain the contraption you used for the dispatch? I can't quite see what it is or how it's made and mounted. I really appreciate your videos! The fact that you explain the challenges to city slickers who are dealing with this for the first time is, I'm certain, really helpful for people who have never done any hunting or anything.
Thank you! It's based off the "rabbit wringer" design, which people sell online. It's also known as the hopper popper.
I really enjoyed the video. I appreciate all the content that you provided.
