Empty portraits (GMM489) by Matt Neufeld
…the Haunted Mansion saga continues..
With this completion of the second movement of The Haunted Mansion trilogy, Canadian writer Matt Neufeld has added a mysterious work which can be played as a movement of the trilogy or as an evocative stand-alone piece. In this concert band work, the listener is taken to a musical space reminiscent of a long, dark hallway hung with ornately framed portraits in which images flicker in and out. Unusual instrumentation including optional bowed vibraphone, high-register baritone saxophone, and a fair amount of dissonance help create the mood of mystery present in “Empty Portraits”.

This mostly up-tempo concert band overture in ABA form from Larry MacTaggart captures the essence of the American West. Brass and percussion dominate the sound palette, including solo trumpet moments and soaring horn lines, as well as thunderous timpani solos that evoke the sound of cattle drives. The contrasting, slower middle section adds richness and beauty to the overture. "Centennial Overt...

This very approachable .5 concert / wind band work was inspired by prehistoric cave paintings, and is a fun way for your students to imagine themselves transported back to ancient, primitive times. It uses primarily the first 6 notes of the Bb concert scale, along with low drums, open 5ths, and player vocalization to help evoke this ancient time before writing was developed. Starting with a mys...
