Mickey Finn (Salmon Style) on a Carrie Steven's CS15 - TFP Fly Tying 2021
* There is a 1 hour and 40 minute reel on my instagram were I discuss and demonstrate all the basically of bucktail *
Episode 2 of the bucktail series - Mickey Finn CS15 Variant
I'm not lying when I say the Mickey Finn is THE fly that everyone should have in their box. The fly that catches all the fishes!
This OG hairwing has proven itself for more than a century and continues to fool fish just like it use to. Even a streamer junkie like myself tries to keep one tucked in the far corner of his box for those desperate days.
This is a true classic and I figured it was only right that I include a hairwing in the bucktail series, to show how versatile this often overlooked material is.
This will most likely be the only traditional hairwing in the series and instead of tying it in its true form I gave it more of a salmon look with jungle cock eyes and a floss rear end. Tied on a Carrie Steven's hook to add to the nostalgia.
Material list:
Hook - Partridge CS15
Thread - Semperfli nano silk 100d white and 100d black
Tag - 1 strand chartreuse floss and 4 strand red floss
Body - Hareline holographic silver diamond braid0
Underwing - red over yellow Hareline bucktail
Flash - 2-3 strands krystal flash
Wing - Harelineyellow bucktail
Eyes - Prosportfisher medium synthetic jungle cock eyes
Head - Solarez thin hard formula

I'm back!! And I hope you all have been well! It's been over a year since I last uploaded a video and will now be taking the channel in a different direction. With more focus on tying than fishing. Not to say there will never be fishing videos uploaded to the channel from here on out. But there will be very few, if any, compared to before. With that out of the way I am very excited to bring you...

Its was a bit of a weird day with the fish coming in waves but we managed to get a few! We were all fishing jigs that we personally tied and they turned out working very well when other baits weren't working. This was actually our first time at this spot and it payed off well! Mas...

Welcome to our first ice fishing video on The Fly Perspective! This is a great way to start off the ice fishing series by getting my PB Brown Trout within 3 minutes of drilling my first hole for the day. This is also my biggest fish while ice fishing and possibly my biggest fish EVER! This chrome monster made me yell salmon at first but after looking further it was most definitely a brown and a...

There were multiple triple ups and even chain triples!! And it all started by seeing one pop his head out and giving it a shot! Extremely sorry for the delay on uploading this video! Merry Christmas and happy holidays! Most people have turkey dinner or spending time with family on Christmas day - I had about an hour and a half alone before dinner and figured I'd hit the lake! The water was cold and the bite slow at first but we got into some nice feisty rainbow and was struggling to keep control of some! The last fish in particular! Along with having a great day and some en...

Foul mouth
Many years ago (35+) there was a house and oyster farm sitting right where your fishing. I haven't lived in or fished CB since that time but in thinking of retirement I have been gearing up with new fly rod and gear and dreaming of the Skye, Margaree, Middle and few spots in between. Thanks for the memories hope to see you out there... :)
Don't you have to deal with jellyfish?
That fly looks amazing!
that is killer. looks like the laser dub extends back to about the hook point?
Always loved your videos what flyes were you throwing the shrimp?
Let em' go and watch em' grow! Nice release, great video.
I realize it’s an older video but what fly were you using and do you use a regular leader or a sinking tip? Thanks.
It was most likely an orange shrimp as I used them a lot at the time but it could of been a mickey Finn also as that was a favorite too. I didn't use a sink tip then but not I do, I have a wide variety of depth rates and lengths to pick from but the 6 foot t5 stays on the most. Just enough to help get a large streamer down and have proper action without dredging the bottom
Now I do***
Green machine! Hands down my favourite salmon fly. Thanks again for the shrimp and trout jigs!
Great content. I subscribed. Respect from New Victoria
Thank you! Appreciate the kind words and support 👊🏼
@@theflyperspective576 Np, keep it up!!
Triple up 🙌🙌🙌 some fishing there buddy 💯💯💯🎣🎣🎣
Wooow that’s insane and I’ve never iced fished before, looks like fun. I’ve caught allot of brown trout and that was to silver to be a brown buddy, think you had a salmon there.unless your brown trouts are more silver over there. Here they brown and yellow.
Definitely a brown with the flat tail and spots below the lateral line. But by far the most silver one I've caught. The cold salt water gets the fresh ones pretty silver and this guy must of been really fresh
@@theflyperspective576 nice one, never seen one that silver. Amazing fish bro 💯💯💯🎣🎣
nice fish
Great fish my man! What area in the lake are you fishing? I can count on one hand how many big browns I've caught. I mostly fish for salmon but I'm not opposed to fishing the lake while waiting for rain and cooler temperatures, if you know what I mean. Thanks
This is in the whycocomagh area
@@theflyperspective576 Right on, thanks! I've caught lots of Rainbows and Speckles around there but not Browns. I'm also I HUGE Mickey Finn fan. Especially tied with Arctic fox hair. Tight Lines bud.
I got a 7.5 pound out of south south 2 years ago on a tip up lol (brown power bait)
New subscriber here my friend, love the video, keep them coming...
Thanks for the support!! Haven't posted any videos in a long time as I'm now commercially tying flies. But I do have some saved up to edit
@@theflyperspective576 your welcome very much, looking forward to seeing more...
@@theflyperspective576 you gets a chance take a look at our channel, be greatly appreciated my friend...
I’m new to fly fishing so I’m watching as many videos through the winter to pick up as much as i can, what size rod are you using to catch these guys on??
I was using an 8wt in this video. 5wt is very popular. I now use a 8'8" loop booster 9wt to throw big streamers and deal with wind and big brown trout, which is now my main target species.
The unintentional live well is kind of useful, eh
I gather you weren't expecting that.
Wow nice fish!! Awesome. What set up do you have for fishing trouts like this in the Bras'Dor (Line, Rod weight, leader..)?
I use an 8wt Normally or a 5wt if it's dead calm which isn't usual. Floating like, may run a sink tip, depends on a lot of things. And I just use a straight length of maxima leader. No fancy tappers and just matching weights
@@theflyperspective576 Thanks for your answer. Glad to hear that you are fishing a 8wt. I have one too and people are telling me it is too heavy duty for trout. Greetings from Marble Mountain!
Definitely not! I prefer my 8wt to deal with the wind and bigger heavier flies. I've also hooked fish i can't move with my 5wt in the lake. More rod is always better than less imo! And fire a msg sometime u wanna go for a fish
@@theflyperspective576 This sounds great! Will do!
Visiting my wife's grandmother in Sdyney this weekend. Any chance that you could recommend a river to fish for trout by fly?
Baddeck or middle river r my stomping grounds and great producers normally
I’m a 8 year old kid I like watching your videos but my mom won’t let me. SO PLEASE STOP CURSING.
Sorry! Working on it...
Nice fish man, awesome reaction too hahahaha
Very professionally edited and great footage my only critique would be to lose the swearing which would bring your vids to a new level, I've watched a few of your videos and find the same thing. Just my humble opinion tho.
Definitely trying to work on it, very hard to do, especially when I'm excited 😂
Thanks for another good one.
Thanks for the continuous support 🤙 much appreciated!! 😁
that was great
Thank you! 🤙 Means alot!
Love this channel with huge trout. Subbed!
Thank you so much 🤙
Love the way you introduce the video with the shot of the fly. As always great video,
Going to try to continue doing that or atleast tell/show you what I'm using!
nice catch man, awesome Mickey jig too!!
Thanks man! The good ol' Mickey Finn works great any style
Where were you fly fishing at in CB
This was boxing day in Whycocomagh bay just before the ice came in!
Love the previews, also like the full videos. Great job with editing out the cursing with the music. Make your previews family friendly and your full videos can be at viewers risk, lol. You should (if you like) include what fly you have on. I may be old but like to learn more and you are doing a great job at teaching me how to get'r done.
This video was shot with the Gordie shirmp fly I tied and used in the Christmas Day video as well. My editing program won't let me add audio less than 1 second and 1 second is too long for for censor bleeps, so sadly I can't bleep them out :( so the footage I have recorded already is fairly full of profanity but future videos will definitely have less to no cursing!
And thank you so much for your support and feedback!!! Means alot!
Nice video as always.
Thank you:)
Love the fishing videos from you guys back near my home in Cape Breton. But seriously guys.. The Swearing...
Thank you! And sorry I'm a sailor, mechanic and fisherman. Its part of my vocabulary and is extremely hard for me not to do but I will try because I'm sure its not just you who minds the bad words! Thanks for the input
@@theflyperspective576 lolol I came to Canada from England as a young teen got a part time job at a small town car dealership at 13 -21 while attending school and college it was a great addition to shop class and a degree in swearing lolol .Both my son and myself are fishaholics I have fished Cape Breton just after the escape or vandalism of fish farm that area . Are these the relatives that escaped to spawn in south river or middle river ?
So, you think you need to "apologize" do you. I think not. Time spent with family and rod in hand is never wasted. Wise I could join in the fun and while I did not make it home to CB this year, I look forward to some time home next year. Will be stopping somewhere along the Whycocomagh Bay when I do. As for you trying to tie flies, cannot wait to see them. I know this fly fisherman can wait for you to put out your very well done videos.
Well I got quite a bit of footage ready to go for editing so keep your eyes peeled and I know I shouldn't feel bad but I still do lol
Sick intro bro 😉
Yes, thank you to my beautiful gf for setting me up with J. Beatty!
Nice I love seeing this kind of content catch bras D'or lake trout the best way possible tight lines!!
Thanks man! And tight lines!
another great video. Please share with us your set-up. Rod, line, leader set-up etc. Can not wait to get back out in the spring.
Thanks! Maybe I will do a setup video for you guys or incorporate it into an intro of a video.... But right now I still have the cheap Superfly 7/8 weight rod and reel combo from Walmart. Rod is pretty good but reel isn't the best so I will be getting a new combo next year for sure. I run the Superfly floating line it came with and maxima ultragreen 8lb leader down to a 6lb leader, tied with either a nail knot or loop knot, then either a clinch, loop or riffle hitch off the 6lb to the fly.
Will sometimes run down to a 4lb leader or straight 8lb but not often, the 8lb to 6lb seems to be working good
@@theflyperspective576 you make it look easy.
@@navytroll hahaha nah I just edit out the hard parts 😂
That speckled put up a crazy fight at your feet.
Yea I find they always get pissed when they get close for some reason
@@theflyperspective576 That is when they realize life is over... but I catch and release so really they are just destroying their face in the process.
Hahaha exactly! Just settle down so I get let you go hahaha
Are these trout sea run ?
We get some sea run speckle but not this time of year normally and we also have alot of resident trout as well, so hard to say for sure. But the rainbow r definitely escapees from the pens
Nice fishing man, that fly never let me down
Thanks dude! And I know eh, the good ol' reliable Micky Finn
Wow... that is a monster brown.
Second biggest (other was 5lb even) I caught and biggest fish and brown on the fly
good on ya providing for those who can not go themselves

beautiful stream.....this Florida boy needs to stalk you to locate some of these gorgeous spots.....lol
I'm always welcome to new fishing buddies!
What fly pattern are you using?
Good ol' Mickey Finn
lol, that was an awesome fish man! I'd guess 23" to 25"
My guess to! I said around 24, 26 max
Great way to start any morning. So what fly did you have on this morning?
Good ol' Mickey Finn!
Subbed, nice to see more cape Breton UA-cam channels cannot wait to see more content!!
Thanks man! Greatly appreciated!
I think I know where this spot is to, behind a certain car dealership I think???
It is! I actually work at the dealership! This was only my second time there, can't wait to get a full day there next season. Be alot better, easier fishing from the other side.
@@theflyperspective576 I went up stream a bit, I did not find it very productive, I was only there once so might have been just an off day.
@@1114flibby alot of people fishing around there right now, so I think it maybe atleast semi productive at certain times of the year or maybe just for salmon
I was just there around Thanksgiving, I crossed and did the thigh burner stair climb to get back to the road :) I assume you have tried the other hole upstream a bit, the one with the rock face behind the little camp?
I have! Also a great spot but sometimes hard to fish depending on water level and flow. If you walk the river to there, there are lots of little pockets behind rocks and along the banks that can hold some decent fish, also depending on level and flow.
Bet you regretted the stair climb at the top hahah i've looked many times but never managed the ambition lol
@@theflyperspective576 lol, it was getting dark and I was parked upstream, seemed easier than wading! I walked that whole stretch from Chucks all the way up to the 2nd steep rip rap bank a few times this year, I found it one of the fishy-est places on the middle during July and August. Just past that hole (the little camp hole) there is a great stretch of water, its just before the place on the other side of the river where the property comes right down to the river, lots of big rocks and fairly deep.
@@1114flibby I know exactly where u mean, definitely one of the best runs for trout this year! Middle river is by far my favorite I have fished for many reasons, that run being one!
Looked like a great time on the water :)
Best way to spend my half hour lunch breaks! Haha
