Repairing Pam's Rivendell Silver shifters
Let's take a look at the inner mechanics of Rivendell's ratcheting shifters, how to repair them and put them back together.
Thanks to my friends at Rivendell! Thanks to Pam Murray for her patience. Thanks to Mike Godwin for donating old parts for the project. Thanks to Will Keating for sending me nice shifter parts that were too nice to use.
These springs fit Silver shifters:

I bought an old MB-3 on Marketplace and made it into an upright cruiser in the Rivendell style with Nitto bars, Suntour Power Thumb shifters, a Brooks B17 saddle and plump 2.35" tires. Build list • 1985 Bridgestone MB-3, 23" frame, Cadet Blue • Sunlite Rigid MTB fork • FSA Duron 1" headset • Araya 26" wheelset • Schwalbe Fat Frank tires, 26 x 2.35 • Nitto x RBW Bosco bar, 56cm • Nitto Technomic...

Rivendell Appaloosa Updates with Ultraromance. Dynamo, Crust Ortho Bars and rapid rise derailer.
Переглядів 65 тис.2 роки тому
I added some new components to my 2021 Rivendell Appaloosa. Installed new handlebars, added a dynamo hub and light, installed Suntour Power Thumb shifters and swapped in vintage Shimano front and (rapid rise) rear derailers. And I de-anodized and polished my Paul cantilever brakes and levers. Special thanks to Dr. Ronnie Romance for the orthopedic care and guidance for pharmaceutical-grade hand...
Rivendell Bicycle Works Joe Appaloosa Assembly

RIVENDELL APPALOOSASSEMBLY! I bought a new Appaloosa from Rivendell in June 2021 and had them build it up for me. It's a 54cm frame in mermaid green. In this video I unpack and assemble the bike with a few additions, mostly brass bits. Parts from Nitto, Shimano, Paul Component Engineering, Blue Lug, Brooks, MKS, Silver, Rene Herse, Velocity, Newbaums, King Cage, Crane and Widefoot. SR-Sakae Rin...
Rivendell Sam Hillborne Bicycle Build
Переглядів 56 тис.3 роки тому
Thanks to a blazing hot tip I purchased this Rivendell Sam Hillborne on craigslist. It was set up for a much taller rider who was on a bike that was too small for them. I broke the bike down and had it repainted by Rob Gassie at Bing Bicycle in Virginia. I installed mostly new components from Nitto, Paul Component Engineering, Brooks, Newbaums, Rene Herse, Velocity, King Cage, IRD, Silver, Cran...

Kind of rolled my eyes a bit at the Rivendell builds. I mean gorgeous, but not for the everyman/woman.. to not put a fine point on it. But, OK!! As a rider of a naturally patined '85 Stumpjumper Sport and a '92 X02, how can I not admire this creative refinish? So well done, and your conviction and dedication.. hats off. Now I can slowly work on my envy of your pure and idyllic surroundings.. assisted by genuine admiration for your effort. (and great cut by Fog!)

So gorgeous. What did you/they finish the grips with? I saw Blue Lug also put some kind of finish. I really like the look and how much sturdier it seems now (one reason I tend to stay away from cotton wrap). Thanks!

I have a 1986 mb3. Similar in build to yours, similar stem, saddle, handlebars, levers and shifters! Although much more work has gone into your frame! I’ve had my bike for about 5 years now and I just came across your videos. I’ve been running the humptulips ridge since release and I just had the thought yesterday to replace the rear with the rat trap pass tire when it’s toast. Though I probably have another 500-800 miles left on it. When I saw your tire combo, I had an AHA moment! Looking forward to watching more of your videos. They are incredibly well done.

I appreciate the small aesthetic modifications. Do you sell these bikes or do custom builds for people? Is this a business?

Thanks so much for this video Eric. I’ve been having ratchet issues for a while and finally stumped up the courage to prise the covers off and see what was going on. The springs and ratchets were fine but gummed up with residue from lube and dirt. A blast out with silicone lube and they’re back together and ratcheting beautifully. Working on old analogue bikes and parts is a joy, isn’t it? Peace and love from Liverpool, UK.

I also run a nexave (sans sticker), found in the parts bin at the bike co-op. Best $5 I've spent.

Hey Eric, love your videos. Now that you've spent a lot of time with both the Appaloosa and the Hillborne, I'm wondering if you gravitate toward one a little more than the other, purely based on vibes/handling/riding enjoyment. I have a Clem and am considering getting a second Riv sometime in the future--leaning toward a Hillborne.

Hi Phillipe - It's a Silver brand crankset called the "wide/low." Silver is Rivendell's house brand. The double crank is a 38/24. Yes, it's square taper. The handlebars are off-road bars and yes, they can be set up for city riding but I have them installed quite a fair bit below the saddle for a more forward, off-road position. But I ride this bike mostly in the city

  • @Frostbiker

This was fascinating, Eric. If I understood this correctly, the purpose of the ratchet is to virtually eliminate any friction inside the shifter when cable is being pulled, so that the rider only needs to counteract the tension from the derailleur's spring. When cable is released, the ratchet is locked and thus the combination of the derailleur's spring and the rider's fingers need to overcome the friction inside the shifter. Did I get it right? It's a clever improvement over a basic friction shifter.
