This video is MUCH longer that I initally thought it would be, and acts almost as if it were a full on review of Linux as an operating system from the perspective of someone who makes UA-cam videos. Honestly, I had alot of fun making something like this, as its a pretty big departure from alot of my other gaming videos, and lets me knuckle down a bit more and get some more serious work done than just making a highlights video, which I still love doing btw!
Anyway, I talk about pretty much everything from installing Linux, some Linux distributions, OBS recording, Desktop Environments, Editing using KDEN Live or Davinci Resolve, and even talk a bit about making thumbnails in Photopea. I tried my best to cover every aspect of making a video for UA-cam in order to find why people don't use this operating system outside of its small niche. And to make certain that I didn't miss anything, I edited this ENTIRE video in Linux, from start to finish, just to prove a point.
Now that this great big long project is done, I'll finally be starting to edit through some stream highlights and get back to uploading more gaming content, this time around I'll be diversifying a little bit more than solely Lethal Company, although I'll still be playing some soon!

Davinchi resolve installation process is the best example, why nobody wanna use Linux. Every time you wanna do something, Linux doesn't expect, you must suffer. And it's usually much harder to find valuable information on how to fix problems, then when you're using Windows

There's just no way to do a large number of things. If you're a creator who plays games with anti cheat, you're not allowed to switch (or you dual boot, and almost never use linux, because you're streaming/recording, and editing too much). And a big one for me that makes me feel doubts the most is that I can't connect Linux to my Elgato capture card. Super annoying.

Linux is just annoying to use. You have an overwhelming majority population that grew up using Windows, with a fairly if not intuitive, then ubiquitous set of features, functionality, layout, etc. Every single time I try Linux, even the distros that are "like windows" (except that paid one that's supposedly super close to windows? I never bothered looking super deep into it) - anyway every time I try Linux I have the exact same experience: - Why the fuck is this here? - Why the fuck is that there? - Why the fuck can't I X? - What the fuck do you mean I need to install X manually from the CLI just to Y? So much design decision on these UX just REEK I mean absolutely STINK to fucking high heaven of "We didn't do it the way that the audience we're courting is expecting it to work because we obstinately refuse to do it the way Windows does it. What do you mean why? Because we don't wanna be like windows!" - Just a mountain of little annoyances and inconveniences that all seem to stem from this same sense of insecurity and inferiority complex towards windows UX. I hate to break it to people who like *nix systems, but Microsoft is fairly good at making functional and intuitive UX. (Win11 notwithstanding that thing is a dumpsterfire of stupid) However - also - fuck Microsoft, fuck Windows, Fuck Recall, MS, Windows, all their AI bullshit, they have their own sets of issues and complaints as well. Decent video, not a bad review, but I kinda disagree with the general takeaway of "Linux is good now and people just don't use it cause they don't know"

I used Linux in my entire undergrad and I became moderately adept at using it. But I think the reasons why content creators don't use it is because there's too many unknown variables. On Windows, open OBS, everything works. Open Davinci Resolve and everything works. Open source and customization means nothing if the software is just inferior. Why use Libre, when Excel is so much better and has so many more features. Discord (which I would assume almost every content creator uses) practically breaks ever so often on Linux. Almost any game near the top of Twitch's most watched categories require anti cheat software that do not support Linux. And the apps that you mentioned like GIMP are just inferior to the industry standard. Like why are scale, rotation and move in different tools rather than just one in GIMP? Davinci Resolve is the rare case where the free alternative is surprisingly better than the standards (Premier, Vegas, Finalcut). The main problem with Linux is that there are too many things that don't work out of the box, and nobody other than the 3% OS market-share that use Linux actually wants to go through a manual or building off of open source software to fix the issue.

I'm a Kdenlive user. Kdenlive has a much different workflow than your usual video editor, with its own pros and cons. Because it's open source and uses FFMPEG, it will decode and encode basically every format you throw at it on a huge range of hardware configurations, although encoding in an uncommon format will take varying levels of extra setup. On the other hand though, the effects stack is limited, doesn't always accelerate well, and just doesn't have a lot of the advanced features of your usual video editor. But for what it is, it is very lightweight and can allow a fast and efficient workflow. Btw, the ripple tool is basically your ripple delete under a different name.

I stream on Linux, mostly gaming so not Linux related content and I never learned any programming language lol. I edit my videos in DaVinci Resolve Free (on Linux ofc) and rather than using terminal to convert video formats, I use Shutter Encoder. Highly recommend that program, it's a godsend. But yeah it is a bit annoying that I have to convert video to edit, then convert back to upload to UA-cam/Tiktok etc... I DON'T use Arch btw, but good old fashioned Linux Mint 😎

As a longtime Linux user and sysadmin, gotta say it can be tough for content creators to make the jump. Hardware drivers for streaming gear are often spotty, most games are Windows-only, and latency issues can really mess up live streams. Real-time kernels in 6.12 are a step in the right direction, but still lagging behind Windows. Wine and Proton are workarounds, not real solutions, and while a split setup (like I do with two PCs) works for me, it's not realistic for everyone. Plus, anti-cheat systems can be problematic on Linux, especially with signed modules - it's a whole other headache as well as other proprietary (Nvidia) drivers. Also the grasp of Adobe or Davinci on stuff doesn't help with Linux on cutting. Shotcut and other open source software are nice once you get used to it which is the biggest hurdle in general for people: you have to learn new software and it's all about willpower ;)

The 1 in 50 figure is cool but i think this simply doesn't encompass people who use their computers intensively especially when they are working with others (video editors, file formats etc), using super specific software that just isn't worth porting to Linux (game capture) or simply don't see the "problems" we have with windows. And yes as some have pointed out but people will nor learn stuff they see as too technical (the command line etc) i myself might find it easy to install Linux but I have linux classes in uni and i have had to personally install Linux for 20% of my class they are engineers!!!

Very well-rounded video! It's refreshing to see an outsider take a first look at desktop Linux systems who has some damn common sense. Personally I think it's just a combination of people not having heard about it, or having heard only lies, or thinking it's simply not an option because they rely on the latest versions of Adobe software and there's nothing more important about their experience using computers than appeasing almighty Adobe. I think also that Windows has tread an intentional path of making the system less configurable, harder to use for people who know what they're doing with computers, and in kind, making the users more dumb over time because there are fewer things with Windows that you can figure out how to do yourself. Additionally I think a very large part of why people *think* Linux systems are complicated compared to Windows, is because the years of intuition they've built for using and learning Windows, if they have any, are completely invisible to them. Why should you just know that the only way to install software is through downloading it from that software project's website, as opposed to a repository/"app store" like most Linux distros? Why should you know you simply can't change the "close, maximize/restore, and minimize" buttons without third party software? Why should you understand the core aspects of the Windows shell like the start menu, the taskbar icons, and especially the hidden system tray and not the fundamentals in KDE or GNOME? *And why the fuck should you ever learn to use RegEdit or anything in the registry ever if you wanted to change any one of a billion hidden options, it sucks so bad!!!*

Spending the whole day tweaking to get the linux distro setup how you want it is also why most content creators don’t bother when all a content creator on windows just has to type in a singular commandline code from a website to install all necessary software, dependencies and updates, let it run for 1 hour and done. (ok perhaps a few more hours configuring and installing the games and OBS but no tweaking inside the OS necessary.

YOOOO Content Creator that uses Linux here! Thanks for bringing this important topic up. It's something that I wondered if anyone noticed, given how monopolized the creation space has become towards Windows and MacOS, especially in gaming and videography culture (respectively). I use PopOS myself and have a System76 PC, and it has been the best purchase of my life. I will never stop promoting the use of Linux and FOSS tools - they give the most ownership and power to the user over not just their software and hardware, but also their IPs and privacy, especially for content creators. Again, thanks for your super important video!

Because its too complex and not compatible? I literally _can't_ use it because my VR games won't work and substance painter also won't work. Blender, unity, and non VR games do work but there's more hoops to jump through. It's much easier to use a windows debloater tool to get rid of all the telemetry and spyware and shit. Plus windows is familiar, not everyone, especially content creators who need to actually be able to focus on making their content has the time to relearn everything. Is it possible? Yes. Is it easy enough to be worth the benefits yet? Not really. I _have_ seen like 1 non tech youtuber using it, forgot the name tho. Some smaller channel.

People don't know this but the ALSA abbreviation actually stands for Ass Sound Architecture. No one has bothered fixing the issue of blowing out headphones on startup and the drivers submitted to kernel level for audio devices are just terrible because the nerds writing them don't understand audio or the devices. This is reason enough not to use linux for content creation but the lack of compatibility with pressure sensitive 3d drawing tablets, ThunderBolt/Dante audio interfaces, video capture cards and all modern content creation software drives the nail in the coffin. Linux is DEAD to artists.

The most important thing is use products that fulfill your needs, whichever that works for you, don't use something just because of trendiness or hypes, if Windows or macOS is sufficed for your computing needs then just use that, it doesn't make you less capable than someone who use Linux, BSD, etc.
