Lots of teams make line breaks, but no one is as good at finishing them off as the Emirates Lions in the @UnitedRugbyChampionship this season.
Here's a short video looking at some of the key factors behind their success off linebreaks. #rugbyanalysis #urcgo

'Tackling in' on Defence: A tactic to buy your team time when defending

When we talk about defence, we often talk about line speed or numbers. Something not talked about as often is tackle choice - where defence starts. Here's a short clip on Munster's defence in the @URCOfficial and the idea of 'tackling in'. #MUNvBUL #URCGO #RugbyAnalysis

Rugby Analysis: Ireland's special 3-phase All Black breaking try

Have tried livening up the commentary a bit on this one, so let me know what you think. This try was just a surreal moment as an Irish fan having seen Ireland struggle against the All Blacks for so many years. History, an away series win in New Zealand and in style too. England v Ireland Analysis: What was going on in the scrums?
Переглядів 20 тис.2 роки тому
Here's a new video looking at one of the burning questions from last weekend's England v Ireland game - what was going on in the scrums? This video won't get into a referee analysis of "he cheated, no he cheated" because every team (including England and Ireland) push their luck in the scrums and I genuinely don't think it was the key difference maker in this game. Instead, this video will take...

It's rare enough that you see a tackle as technically spot on as this one from Cardiff's James Botham - so I had to make a video about it! Even if you only take one or two things from the video, hopefully it will make your tackle technique better too. Also, apologies for not uploading ...

    For me, there's a gap to put 12 through, the defense doesn't come up evenly at all and the Quins 10 (Smith?) gets stuck on his heels; even if he makes a tackle there it's easy ground with your back row coming through for quick ball. Next best option is to get it wide to 11 and 15; the kick defence doesn't come up very quickly, meaning there aren't good kick options but there's space on the outside corner.

    I know it is a small thing and in a way rugby 101, but the 'watching the hips' is so important and it strikes me that it says a lot about Canterbury/Crusaders attention to getting all the small things right, to doing the basics extremely well. I suspect it is part of the reason why the club/franchise can cope so well with injury and the ongoing hollowing out of provincial level quality, because even an otherwise modestly talented player can do a good job if they have really worked on getting a solid foundation in the basics. It is surprising how often you will see players at Super Rugby level with major deficits in basics skills, including basic parts of their position. This applies especially to Australian players but you see it in NZ, too. You just won't see it too often at Canterbury/Crusaders. The Brumbies are another unit that seem to have a very strong and coherent focus on the small things. Thanks for the analysis - really enjoyed it.

    martial arts state that when crouched, you gotta have a foot forward to align your chest with your line of power. Lined feet = weak point just below your chest. Does this apply for the props during scrum? It certainly does in tackling

    • @ekrugbyanalysis6880
      @ekrugbyanalysis6880 Рік тому

      The inside shoulder of an attacker or defender is the direction the ball came from originally. For example, Lolesio who makes the break would be on Slippers inside shoulder. Holloway would be on Slipper's outside shoulder.

    • @twoilms7701
      @twoilms7701 Рік тому

      It's only an obstruction if the defender is in a position to make a tackle. In this case he was way too far away from the play. You risk being caught in an offside position blocking like this, but I think McReight was involved in the ruck/clean out so it's unlikely he was.

    • @ekrugbyanalysis6880
      @ekrugbyanalysis6880 Рік тому

      Cheers! On another day, another ref definitely could have called it as obstruction as McReight is ahead of the play. Koch is very fast for a prop too, so I would have backed him to get at least a hand on Lolesio otherwise.

    • @alexsupertramp5600
      @alexsupertramp5600 Рік тому

      Strictly speaking you're right, but in practice these kinds of blocks rarely ever get called. Only if you're really obviously hindering play they will call it but test sides actually abuse this to make their set piece moves etc. work.

    this reminds me of a leinster defense strategy with Leo Cullen where the defender (usually a center) closed the space up and the second and third row went to his back to fill the gap... if you can make moves with inside balls a pivot and 2 options outside you can really exploit these ways to defend

    • @ekrugbyanalysis6880
      @ekrugbyanalysis6880 Рік тому

      A huge amount of pro teams run this defensive system now, Leinster included. In Leinster's case, they've even ran Australia's move quite a bit in the past! Think inside pass are more dangerous than ever right now around the edge of the ruck because of this way that teams defend.
