1993 7.3 IDI Turbo ZF5 Gear Clatter
Переглядів 4594 роки тому
What the heck is causing the gear rattle? - 2 year old DMF/clutch - 2 year old injection pump - Brand New injectors 20 minutes before this video Nothing changed after the injectors. I thought I just got a bad one or two a couple years ago. I got so fed up with trying to figure out which one was the culprit, that I just replaced them all. Nothing changed. Any ideas out there? A bad IP, maybe?? G...
7.3 IDI Turbo ZF5 Solid Flywheel Gear Rollover Noise (?)
Переглядів 7 тис.6 років тому
1993 Ford F250 7.3 IDI Turbo Diesel ZF5 Transmission, 4x4 Luk SMF conversion kit Is this gear rollover? It probably is. Personally, I hate the noise from this kit. There is no noise at idle, but there is plenty once you try to move in 1st and 2nd gear. I'm considering an attempt at rebuilding my dual mass flywheel. Other than the noise, everything else is pretty good with this clutch kit. The p...
Rollover Noise?
Переглядів 4,9 тис.6 років тому
1993 F250 4x4 7.3 Liter Turbo Diesel IDI ZF5 transmission with Luk Single Mass Flywheel conversion Not sure if the buzzing/grinding sound is a normal sound that is considered "rollover" noise. It sounds like gears rattling their teeth together to me. Just posting this for the good folks at the Ford-Trucks.com forums to consider. Thanks!

Just messing around with my GH2, so I thought i'd throw a bunch of meaningless footage of trees and leaves together with touching music to give the illusion of purpose. In the end, you could say it is the random calm of a dream before waking. It still holds up okay to the new cameras. Dynamic range isn't great, but the bitrate makes things crisp. Mines making the same noise I can’t figure out what it is
I never could figure it out. I think it's just the DMF not matched to the clutch/engine. My only thought was that I got an extra springy pressure plate. Maybe it shouldn't have been paired with that flywheel. I don't have the truck anymore, but if you figure it out, please update. The noise used to drive me crazy.
Is this noise actually causing anything? My buddies and I did a new dualass Luk flywheel/clutch kit into my ZF5 and I hear this noise going downhill in 1st gear, sounds pretty bad but if it's just a noise that doesn't do anything then I'm fine with it.
hey i was just curious how much can you hear a single mass at idle on a 7.3 i’m about to put one in
I couldn't hear much difference at idle. It was in gear that I got all the noise. Low rpm buzzing, then some more noise generally at freeway speed. If you are determined to put a solid flywheel, and if you have gear noise, make sure your ip timing is perfect and your injectors are all good. I ended up putting a new DMF back in, but had some clattering in neutral with the clutch engaged with that. I don't have the truck anymore because it was totalled, but manual diesels seem to be a bit of a hassle in my opinion. Yeah, the ZF5 is reliable, but I wish it used thicker oil to provide a little more cushion to the gears or something.
ok thank you i appreciate it
did you solve the problem? i have the same problem with a ZF i just converted to manual the transmission is rebuilt
Yeah, I pulled the transmission again and replaced the solid flywheel with a DMF. They may still sell them on rockauto, but they are pricey. My truck got totalled in a run-in with an 18-wheeler, but if I did it all again, I'd go for an automatic with the diesel. I hated the SMF gear rollover, and I hated the arrythmic gear clatter that came with the DMF, and the dual mass flywheels don't last all that long anyway. The manual was fun to drive, but turned into kind of a headache for me. Best of luck to you though. If you don't want to pull the tranny, start with making sure everything is running in tip top shape (injectors, IP, no leaks in return lines, and the timing on your pump).
It’s the splined bushing in the center of your clutch that the input shaft runs through. They get loose. Don’t listen to this guy, autos are ghey asf and no fun. #savethemanuals
I hear overfilling slighly from the shift tower can solve this sometimes
Ever figure it out? Recently put a new South bend clutch kit in and everything works fine but if I get down to around 1000 rpm in gear it starts making that grinding noise.
Is is still grinding?
@@bmanm5217 I changed the fluid to a higher end Red line fluid. And it seems to make the gear roll over much quieter. Other than that there's nothing that can really be done that's just the way the transmission sounds. It's gear roll over. But better fluid makes it much quieter.
@@hyakkimaru6709 I got ya. I appreciate you getting back to me. Thanks buddy
@@bmanm5217 absolutely. Also, after changing to the red line fluid it only really makes the grinding sound if you're at low RPM in gear and are hitting bumps and potholes. If you're at low RPM on flat ground it doesn't make any noise for the most part. Hope this helped you. 👍
Hey buddy, mine is making the same noise, but is mostly heard while driving (sounds like occasional knocking). I figure it's the DMF... but yours is only two years old. Please update when you can!
Yep, sounds just like my 6.9. I guess it might be time to do a zf5 swap
My 1990 is making the same noise. Let me know what you find out.
Will do. I'm suspecting air intrusion, actually. I'll give an update once it's fixed.
did you figure out how to resolve it?
Yeah, I pulled the transmission again and put a new dual mass flywheel in it.
Did yours make any noise up around 1500 or 2000 RPM, when decelerating? Or was it quiet at those RPM's
@@84patking where did you get a new Dual mass flywheel from? I can seem to find one anywhere
@@johnathanbooth1865 Rockauto.com Looks like they are up to 625 dollars now. Mine is a 7.3 turbo idi. Not sure if they have one for other configurations. It is balanced differently than the 6.9. www.rockauto.com/en/parts/valeo,167708,flywheel,5348
