A Wise Man Once Told Me " IF IT DOSEN'T WORK YOU CAN'T BREAK IT, SO TAKE IT APART AND FIX IT." Having grown up in rural Indiana and living on the same property for over 50 years, I have tackled project's from necessity (or just having fun) which includes, but is not limited to, home remodeling, vehicle restoration's and property management, with a little technical information throne in. I have enjoyed working with my hand's and figuring out the rest. The fundamentals are the same across all mediums it just requires different tools to accomplish the finish product. I hope you enjoy this channel and the journey it captures.
David Brown 880 e1 remove the FREEMAN Loader
After 280 hours of service, we begin the the new overhaul of "Brownie". The first step removing the FREEMAN loader. As the series unfolds we tear into the AD3/55 diesel engine, the trunnion pin, and of course the Livedrive clutch system. Tech takes us back to the restoration in never before seen footage.

Thanks Barry, we have a unique opportunity to look at the success and failures of the restoration. Nothing major was wrong but curiosity got the best of me. We look at the AD3/55 engine, the clutch, the trunnion pin, etc. Much of the footage from the original restoration is rough, we'll try to make it work.
This is so exciting! Gonna be a great series.

Yes he will, life skills are always useful. They don't seem to be taught enough these days. We are very proud of our son, he's teaching our grandkids a lot of life skills.
Well Done Brad, you got there in the end, I've had to use metric Orings at times to get the cross section, especially on the hydraulics, your right the replacement Orings just are the quality they should be, i'm busy playing catchup on youtube, working all hours at the moment keep up the good work Barry
Thanks, Barry. I don't think the gaskets or bearings are as good as the original. You have quite a remodel on your hands, it's coming along nicely. The o-ring works until too much pressure is applied, and then it leaks. The connector is easier to get to but still aggravating.

Brad I have been sharpening my blades for many years while lifting with 3 point with wedging blocks ,going under neath with grinder on the last minute ,very awkward & dangerous for eyes & grinder safety next time try it your way with c clamps & lifting on side thx for tip , you are Sir very technical thx
Thanks, I like this method much better. Especially as I have aged, crawling under the mower was difficult and dangerous. It's easier to see the cutting edge with it upright as well.
Interesting Brad. I had the same issue with my 880. I have a three way valve instead of the connector and struggled to find a good fitting 5/8" o-ring. I tried two, the first 3/32" which measured at 104 thou and second a 1/8" which measured 138 thou. The 3/32" doesn't seem to give a positive enough fit when the 3 way valve is pushed on and the 1/8", whilst it protudes nicely around the connector, was too thick to allow the 3 way valve to be pushed on. So I need a 7/64" if such a thing exists. The DB parts manuals are great, but I wish they would specify the o ring thickness rather than just the ID.
It is strange that the thickness isn't given in the manuals. I have 227 hrs on the o-ring, and it started leaking. It was worse when a load was applied, of course. It's not a metric measurement on the ID. The thickness is critical. I take the parts, if possible, to a local seal and hose company. They measure the parts as well as seals, and I get the ones above and below. They're not expensive, and it makes reassembly better. Thanks David

The water steam cleans the griddle, it's not necessary every time. The oil is to keep it from rusting, which is more important. Happy cooking

Yes, the o-ring seals until enough pressure is applied to the connection to break the seal, and then it needs replaced. The thicker o-ring should handle the load.

Great videos Brad. I only just came across your channel thanks to Barry from manfromthemist. I’m also restoring a 1967 880 Selectamatic like yours so it’s interesting to see another example. I have a few questions: 1) do you have any videos from when you restored the tractor? 2) where is the horn on your tractor, if it has one? and 3) what is the serial number? Mine is 544543 from October 1967 but mine was made just after the change to the full flow hydraulic filter, rather than the bypass filter on yours. 4) If the headlight wiring runs down the underside of the bonntet, is there a connector somewhere in front of the fuel tank for allowing the bonnet to be removed? Most of the wiring has been removed from mine. Looking forward to the next video!
Hello David, I have seen your comments on Barry's channel nice to hear from you. 1) I do have video from the restoration, hope to put them together and publish in the near future. 2) I do not have a horn, the parts manual shows it above and in between the fuel and temp gauge. I highly recommend getting the parts manual the exploded view and part numbers are very helpful. 3) Serial # 539074 that is 336 before the 1st one of 1967. 4) I have pictures on the community page of my channel showing the headlight harness, a single wire runs from switch under fuel tank to left side of tractor, the connector then turns into 2 wires it is attached to the bonnet about a foot or so from the end then runs down the bonnet past the radiator into the headlight compartment and is held in place by metal clips. My dad purchase the 880 new from a dealer hear in Indiana in Dec. 1967, the freeman loader is the only thing not original to Brownie, it has been a very reliable "work horse" al these years. restoring it was an amazing project a lot of fun. @@TECH.274 Thanks Brad. Yes, I do have the parts and service manuals you refer to and especially the parts manuals have been invaluable when sourcing parts from eBay or breakers. I don't know how I would have done it without. On 1) - really look forward to seeing those videos if you can upload. Although I have lots of photos of my ongoing restoration, I do wish now I had started to video it all. 2), I have seen horns fitted on the side of the intake manifold (as shown in the parts diagram you posted) and also on the front of the fuel tank support on the starter motor side. I don't know whether my tractor had a horn originally but the dash (possibly also not original) has a horn button so I'll fit one in front of the tank. 3) Thanks for the info on the serial number; I assumed yours was a late 1967 model if your father purchased in December 1967. According to factory records that someone sent me, it was manufactured sometime around the 23rd-30th December 1966. 4) Thanks for the photos - I guess your headlamps don't have main/dipped beam, just main?
Hi David, Hopefully this fall I can get some videos of the restoration together, stay tuned. I was guessing December 1966 for manufacturing, the steering pump is stamped July 66, the hydraulic pump October 66. Headlamps are main, I'm guessing my 880 is set up more for field than road, without the horn or flashers. In the states we didn't have to register the tractors to drive on the roads. It looks like David Brown had different setups for different countries. It has been fascinating researching the company and all that went into the production and shipping of the tractors. David Brown Tractor Club tractor news has had many great articles on the process. Again any information, I am happy to share.
Hi Brad, the 880 you have is basically a 990 with a 3 cylinder motor, i.e. heavy duty from the gearbox back. I think the front axle is 990 also, but watch the stub axles with that loader you have, although it may have the heavy duty stubs, the stubs are prone to break if you overload them. I too have an 880 and used to work at the local DB dealer here in New Zealand. Regards, Rod.
Thanks Rod, that is in the front of my mind when I use the loader. It came with the large bucket, so I'm cautious when I have a lot of weight (like rocks) in it, I take it in low gear. In late 2021 when I disassembled the 880, the front trunnion pin was worn on the top, which made it difficult to remove. I had 1 made locally, it's 1.250 in diameter while the 990 is 1.500. I believe they changed the 880 to the larger size later in production, the freeman loader did a number on the pin in 50+ years. Great to hear from you.

Good luck indeed, the initial tear down of the pump (Jan. 2022), the "O" ring on the pressure relief valve was blown. The pump couldn't produce enough pressure to operate properly. It's not easy to get to but not difficult to fix either thanks for watching.
Hi Brad, great video, loads of detail, while you where in there did you notice how the wires for your head lamps was routed, i'm busy maunfacturing a full harness for my 990, which didn't have the front end harness on it when I bought it, so I'm not sure how the wires get passed the radiator, any help would be appreciated. many thanks Barry
Thanks Barry, I watched your video wire harness #4 this morning. The 880 harness/tube is on the left side, the headlight harness is attached to the hood. There is a connection in front of fuel tank, 1 wire from switch 2 wires after connection there in a protective covering I will e-mail some pics of it. Keep up the good work.

Just found this after replacing the dowty on my 880, was told the pumps didnt have repair kits available in Australia so got a new pump which was straight forward but had to then source a 2nd hand plessy gear as the dowty one didnt fit the new pump which comes ex gear and PRV
Before dismantling Brownie for restoration, I ordered various gaskets and seals, 1 of which was a kit for the hydraulic pump. After getting into it, I have the Dowty not Plessey pump, which is what the kit is for. The parts manual show's the "O" ring's for inlet/outlet/PRV to be the same on both pumps. The gears are different by shaft size 1/2 to 7/16 which I didn't realize until now. I use MSP seals here in the US for "O" rings/seals as well as hoses/fittings that's how I purchased the parts for the Dowty pump. My 880 is a 1966, the Dowty had 2 versions early/late the late has 1 "O" ring for PRV and the early had 2. MSP has done a great job with not only with Brownie and the Freeman loader but also other projects I have done. When possible I take the parts in for measure and get a couple "O" rings above and below what it measures, after 50+ years of service they can be difficult to measure. D.B. changed pumps at serial # 540166 on the 880, that puts it somewhere in the 1st quarter? of 1967, I hope the replacement pump works well, mine has been working great.
@@TECH.274 yes mine is #537467, the new pump is working well but doubt it will run for over 7,000 hours as the previous one did but I wont be around for that lol. I still have a little hicuping of the hydraulics under load which indicates potential ram piston oring or other issue. Other than that she's a beauty

Yes, I received the wrong oil filter it's not worth the cost of shipping to return it. The O-ring is a bummer given where the pump is located. We haven't had any issue since the repair. Thanks
Thank you for this. I've just bought an 885, the brakes and hydraulics are first on the list of things that need looking at. The David Brown Co. parts, such as the O rings you received, are they new old stock or do you know if they are newly manufactured?
@@marklloyd4536 Hello Mark, The kit that David Brown Parts sells is new, with seals and O rings. It is for the Plessey pump, the kit #962136. My 880 is a 1966 2nd year of production it had the Dowty pump and the kit didn't work for that pump. I highly recommend getting the parts and service manuals for your 885 it helps with locating the correct parts, you can goggle the part number. The 885 replaced the 880 in 1972 and is the pretty much the same, I have purchased used 885 parts for my 880, the crankshaft rear main seal housing is 1 example. They are great tractors. I would have to agree for cars...past 70. 71 and up were garbage. Now a 1970 chevelle 454 LS6 with a 4 speed? Mint. But that was it. The end. Now trucks on the other hand held out strong until the 80s... any of the American trucks from 60s and 70s were some of the most beautiful trucks ever made. I may be partial though due to owning a 79 bronco for what its worth.
