Making pottery pumpkins for incense this autumn - Halloween is coming!
Hi Friends!
In this tutorial I show you how I make these new pottery pumpkins for incense cones and tealights. I take you through each step: throwing on the wheel, trimming, carving, and glazing before firing in the kiln. You can see them all finished at the end along with lots of other pumpkin pieces I’ve been working on for autumn and Halloween!
These will be going on the website for my next Kiln Opening on Sun 6th Oct at 3pm BST.

Ah thank you!! xxx
I love your little cottages!!! Sooo darling
Ah thank you so much xxx
Omg…sooo cute!!❤❤❤ you mentioned glaze recipes….any chance you would share the yellow and brown ones on the “squash pumpkin”? Lovely!!❤
Sure thing the yellow glaze is this base glaze glazy.org/recipes/78051 and replace the cobalt and iron oxide with 6% high fire yellow stain (www.bathpotters.co.uk/high-fire-yellow-inclusion-glaze-stain-ref-zl-258/p3410) and 2% honey stain (www.bathpotters.co.uk/honey-leadfree-glaze-body-stain-b124/p279) and the brown is this one: glazy.org/recipes/17361
Just breathtaking work 🌈
Ah thank you so much!!
I've started paying close attention to your glaze colors for when we order our place setting, everyday set. I think the only thing that isn't listed online that we might want is a black for my husband but the others will be regular colors I think. I'm getting excited about it though and can't wait to email you back with our official order lol 💙LOVE your work! So much cuteness in one place I can hardly stand it🤩
Ah thank you Kera!! I do actually have a black glaze so when you want to order just email me and I can send you a photo :)
So cute! Love everything you do! 💙
Ah thank you!! So lovely of you xxx Thank you for watching :)
Everything you make is so cute

So cut! Thank you for sharing your process! Lovely video
Ah thank you for watching :) xxxx
Thank you for presenting your tile making. It has inspired us with confidence to do our own relief tiles. Your end result looks fantastic.
For the bisque firing, how do you stack your tiles?
@@benjaminshaw I'm so glad you found the video helpful and good luck for making your own tiles :) For bisque I stack them on top of each other about max 5 tiles together so they aren't too thick. Thank you! Su x
What....this is precious!! I'm going to look for you on IG!
Ah thank you!! X
2:09 😂😂 I'm American!!! Thank you:) I can work in centimeters too. I love making these boxes!!! I'm going to finish your video now:)
Hehe!! I always find the conversions tricky!! So glad you like them :) Thank you for watching! x
It's very pretty :) What is that little smoking thing you put it over?
Thank you!! Its an incense cone xx
Уважаемый Мастер! Сколько стоит такой чудесный домик?
Hey they vary in price - you can get an idea from my last shop update here: www.blankearth.co.uk/kiln-openings New houses will be added to the website on the 6th October x
Are these type of homemade tiles okay for a bathroom reno--waterprooof, etc?
Hi yes they are waterproof and absolutely fine for a bathroom reno xx
@@BlankEarthCeramics thank you! Might try making my own bathroom tiles!
@@cinnamaldehyde5815 Yay good luck x
How long do you burn it fore ?
It increases about 100C every 10 mins up to 1000C Thanks for watching :)
Are your houses green or do you start with them already bisque fired?
They are bisque fired :)
You provided perhaps the best walkthrough of making your own tiles that I’ve watched so far. I love your process. ❤ it’s very inspiring!
Ah that's lovely to hear! I'm glad you found it helpful :) Thank you for watching! X
Stunning work, as always! I'm excited to see the mushrooms 🍄 😊👏
Thank you for your kind words! Me too :) Glazing them this week!! x
Thanks, I'd love to see how you make those handles🥰
Thank you Joyce! I will put it on the list to make a handles video thank you!
So exciting! I love to see what you are up to 💙
Yay thank you Kera! Glad your enjoying the Kiln Opening series :)
Beautiful ❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
Stunning result. Is it a "thing" that you can find a kiln space for hire to do this? It needs to be cost effective too. I would dearly love to make my own. Bx
Thank you so glad you like them :) You can look into kiln hire in your area - this website is great for checking www.kilnshare.com

Very pretty and creative
Thank you so much xx
Thank you so much! So helpful and so nice!
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it x
Dogwoods are my favorite flower :) Thanks for the great videos!
Wow such a pretty flower :) Thank you for watching xxx
I use a small plaster bat to put cups upside down on after putting the handle on if the cup is a bit dryer than the handle. I let them sit a day or so and the moisture equalizes and you are able to smooth out any cracks.
Thank you so much for the tips - will try that out next time :)
I would have liked to see the finished glaze product
Sorry I didn't manage to film this one but I have lots of photos on the instagram if you want to take a look - you have to scroll back to the less recent ones instagram.com/blankearth/
What kind of wood are you using for the slats?
Hi Its water-resistant MDF made by Hartley and Noble :)
Very nice mugs. And congratulations with your wedding, almost a year ago as i watch this video. Nice wedding gift for your quests. ♡
Thank you!! yes it was or 1 year anniversary recently hehe xx
@@BlankEarthCeramics you are welcome
Hello, thank you for sharing your studio set-up - it is a useful video because I have just got a quote to convert my single garage into a studio, which I am really excited about. Is it okay to keep a kiln in the same space or should I house in a separate building? What would be the best solution please? Also, I plan to use the garage studio year round (I live in the UK) and was wondering what the best form of heating will be?
That's great news! Congratulations :) You can have the kiln in the same space as long as you vent the fumes out and make sure it has the recommended clearance from surrounding furniture etc. I use an electric heater but it isn't the most efficient - I'm hoping my next studio will be much bigger then I'm planning to have a wood burner but that would depend if you have the space. I recently have put a de-humidifier in the studio to remove the excess moister in the air but as a by product it does also generate heat which is fab. I'm sure you have but make sure the garage is very well insulated so that will help a lot :) Thank you so much for watching! Su x
I just love everything you make! I can't wait to get to the point my husband and I finally retire, move, upgrade and I get to order all new everything from you!
Ah thank you for such a lovely comment - that has made my day :) So So grateful for your support xxx
Thanks for sharing your tips
No problem! Thank you for watching :)
Where do we buy from you?
Do you mean the glazes? I get them from Bath Potters in the UK www.bathpotters.co.uk/slips-glazes/raku-glazes/raku-brush-on-glazes/c283?filter=1&f_category=190 but you can also get them direct from their website www.spectrumglazes.com/product-category/glazes/850-series-raku-glazes/
cool.. thanks for the video :)
Thank you for watching :)
So you glaze the bottom of the tea light holder and wipe the rim, on the lighthouse ? Why? Love them 💕
Thank you!! I wipe the rim of the tealight dish that sits on top of the lighthouse base because I will fire it upside down with rim touching the kiln shelf (I want the bottom glazed so its easier to clean if you want to put a tealight underneath it in the lighthouse base). The lighthouse base and lighthouse top are fully glazed and I just wipe the bottoms as they will be fired in the kiln upright. Each piece is fired separately. I hope that helps - let me know if you have any other questions :)
I use Spectrum exclusively on my Raku and you sounded a little disappointed on a couple results. I really dig your results but I can tell you why Nebula and Starry Night didn't develop as fully as possible. Your reduction chamber was WWAAYY too big for your pieces. For small forms like the cabins you really don't want a reduction vessel any larger than a shoebox. I completely understand why you went with a group reduction, and I'm not trying to throw shade either, I'm just offering advice from multiple frustration fueled refires of my own 😁. The smaller the vessel the better and Spectrum LOVES hardwood chips and glossy magazine pages. I sound really negative but I do love your results, especially Algae Bloom!!! I never get those metallic flashes that you achieved. Plus I've always shied away from Topaz, I use 886 Lapis, but I should have gone with Topaz. Yours is nicer than mine. This comment is way too long. Beautiful work! Congratulations 👏🎉 P.S. my experience with most crackles has been that thin application makes thin cracks and small islands but thick application makes icebergs with rivers in between
Wow that's so helpful thank you so much for sharing your experience :) This has come at the best time because I'm just going to do my first raku of the year this month. Will be going to the shop to find a smaller vessel and some hardwood chips! Really excited now. I'm getting started making this years Christmas decorations early hehe. Hope you have a fab week!! x
Really enjoyed watching your tour. I am about to set up a studio but a larger one for classes etc. I have the same wheel as you and ordered a diamond core tool grinding disc bat but mine didn’t fit the wheel for some reason and yours seems to look different. Did you have to make adjustments with your batt?
So glad you found it helpful and good luck for your new studio - how exciting! I had the same problem because of metric vs imperial measurements - they are very slight out. I bought a diamond core pad that is smaller and has sticky back plastic on the back so I could attach it to a wooden batt that fit my wheel. www.scarva.com/en/gb/DiamondCore-Tools-120-Grit-Diamond-Grinding-Disc/m-7783.aspx
So beautiful 🤩
Thank you!!
I loved watching this process! Thank you for sharing.
