Set up a Keyboard Shortcut to Switch Between Illustrator & After Effects
Learn how to set up a keyboard shortcut to quickly switch between Adobe Illustrator and After Effects and vice versa.
I set this up because recently one of my favorite tools for After Effects and Illustrator, Overlord, got updated. In Overlord 2, there’s no longer a button to switch from After Effects to Illustrator or vice versa, but I used that button all the time!
You don’t need to have Overlord for this keyboard shortcut to work, but here’s the link to check it out: battleaxe.co/?ref=animationexplained
Sorry to all Windows users, this tutorial is specific to Macs. Maybe ask ChatGPT how to do it on Windows (that's how I learned how to do this in the first place).

Im 15mins in. Actually I know all of the stuff you said till there but I have to say that your explanation style is very dope and beginner friendly. I am definitely going to watch more of your stuff. Especially because you also show common mistakes!! That's so helpful!
Thank. You. I saw other people having a similar explanation, but I didn't see anyone addressing the last frame issue, so this is super helpful, thank you
Glad I could help!
Why am I here? For we have entered the brainddead UI of Adobe.
All good importing the ai file to after effects, but when i create shapes from vector layer, the bounding box is big and to fix that i have to delete a "group 1" in the content of the layer... why does that happen??
That happens when you have a layer that's not 100% opacity or doesn't have the "Normal" blending mode. Annoying, I know!
Hi can anyone help me. When i hold down the shift hoping to get a perfect square i get a perfect rectangle instead 😢 same for the ellipse tool i get a perfect oval. What could be the issue
Here are a couple ideas of what could be going on: In Composition Settings, make sure that Pixel Aspect Ratio is set to Square Pixels. Are you adding a shape to an existing layer that is already scaled? Hope this helps!
@@animation-explained I'd check this out, and no I'm creating a new shape as a new layer
How do I scale the shape inside the mask without scaling the mask itself?
If you have a mask on a native After Effects shape layer (NOT an image, video, or layer imported from Illustrator), you can scale the shape without scaling the mask. To do this, toggle open the shape layer, under Contents > Shape (like Rectangle, Ellipse, etc.) 1 then under Transform: Shape 1, adjust this scale value. If your mask isn't on a shape layer, there's not a simple way to scale the layer without scaling the mask. It might be better to use Track Mattes which I cover in this video: ua-cam.com/video/UCtM-0Q28cs/v-deo.htmlsi=aubSqO-yPNsRmH0E Hope that helps!
When I import the .ai file, it align>centers each shape in the file to the center of the screen. It also l ayers them alphabetically which is so annoying. What is going on?
Make sure you have the exact settings that I do at 12:50. So 'Import As: Composition - Retain Layer Sizes' and make sure that 'Force Alphabetical Order' is not checked. Then once the file is imported, from the Project panel, you want to open the composition that it creates for you. It will also create a folder of all the vector layers, but if you drag all of the vector layers from the folder into a composition, they'll all be in the center of the comp. Hope that helps!
I love you and your tutorials! But I have an important question. I have the latest AE update (Version 24.6) and I can't see the "Overlord" panel! Where can I find it?
Thanks! Overlord is a paid add-on tool, so if you downloaded and installed it, it would be under Window > Extensions. I'm sorry if that was confusing in the video. Overlord is definitely not necessary to import Illustrator files into After Effects, but I (and a lot of other professional motion designers) use it, so I thought it was worth mentioning in the video.
@@animation-explained Oh okay :) Thank you for your quick reply! I will surely use it once I get the hang of AE.
click and drag is what i was looking for. you made it so easy!
Glad I could help!
I just spent half of the day binging your videos, it's outrageous your vids are not getting thousands of likes. This is the best resources I'd come across for after effects ever, explanations are crystal clear, straightforward and logical. Just wanna say a big THANK YOU!!
Thank you!! I’m so happy to hear that 😃
That 90's corporate video music...ugh.
I’m not a music person; I’m a motion designer 🤪 I’m open for suggestions on where to find affordable non-90s corporate music though!
i love you
Thank you.
Thanks for the quick and easy video
You're welcome!
Your videos are actually a loop 😵💫
These are incredible tutorials, thank you!
Glad you like them!
Thank you so much!
Great tutorial!
Thanks!
Links are missing in options. I have only layer parents. Please help how to get this links inside options.
In the bottom left corner of the timeline, there are a couple toggle icons. Click through those until you see the Parent & Link options.
@@animation-explained yep, its just parent. Links are missing. I guess its because 2018 version of ae? 🤔
@@blizaardy That could be it. I know the way that track mattes work has been updated since 2018, but that shouldn't change how parenting works.
Can i get the complete playlist of this video

many thanks💗💗

Excellent Video!!!
Thank you!
Trying os hard to vocal fry that your voice cracks, it's 2x more annoying...
😢
at 3:00 you say to select the "add" button and select Trim Paths. However, after importing my layers from Illustrator, the only option I see is "Transform". It looks like in your example, there's a star icon next to this layer, whereas mine has the Illustrator icon instead. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance!
You need to convert your Illustrator layer into a shape layer. To do that, right click the layer and choose Create > Create Shapes from Vector Layer.
Thank you so much! I have trouble exporting through Media Encoder (Dynamic Link error that I am unable to fix), and your method of using Photoshop instead worked very well, plus you have a llot of control over the output size and quality.
Glad it helped!
Thank you for the wonderful tutorial. Teacher, I have a question apart from this tutorial (After Effects). If two circles (fill) with different colours meet together by positioning keyframes and making the third colour it works correctly. If I try with two strokes rather than fill they don't work as with fill? Could you please help me with this?
I’m not sure (I’m not in front of my computer right now). Can you explain a little more about what you’re doing? Are the circles separate shape layers, using track mattes or blending modes? Or are both circles in the same layer, using matte paths?
Nice
Wow this is the best class ❤️🔥new subscriber here !!!!
Thank you!
Thank you for this! Super helpful :)
short and sweet <3 <3 <3
please make a tutorial of how to change dynamically the width of rounded rectangle and keep its left side at the same position because I forget the expressions I used and write it from scratch. in this case I will always refer to your video :)
Great suggestion! I’ll try to make a tutorial about that soon.
Thanks, this is very useful. I use shape layers as track mattes, so all the animations in this video apply to my track mattes (paths).
Hi! Thank you for such a valuable effort here. I've been lately incorporating animation and motion graphics into my offer. I'm having kind of an issue: When designing my compositions with the native shape builder in AE (which allow me to animate more specific properties of each element right from the start) instead of dynamic linking files from AI, I sometimes get pixelated artwork when nesting precomps into bigger compositions and doing camera panning. I've triple checked my camera focal length is matching the layer I want to focus on, as well as having the "continously rasterize" toggle on (which is defaulted to always on btw when I make shapes on AE don't know why). Still don't seem to be able to solve this pixelating issue. SO, (and sorry for the lengthy comment) I thought therin came the relevance of making the artwork first on AI and the importing over to AE, but what would be the point of that if later we're turning those layers into native shapes? I would've thought having those linked to a vector layer back in AI was the only way AE could refer to any vecto information when doing that continous rasterizing. So is that info lost when creating shapes from vector layer in AE? I'm sure I'm probably not approaching this matter the best way, any advice would be truly appreciated. Thank you for this excellent channel, subscriber for life.
Good question and I know you're not the only one that's experienced that issue. Continuous rasterization means that AE will calculate the vectors on every frame so that they are always crisp (ie not blurry/pixelated). Shape layers will always be continuously rasterized since they are vectors. Vector shapes imported from AI can be continuously rasterized by turning on the switch. Shape layers created in AE, vector layers from AI converted to shape layers, and vector layers from AI with continuously rasterize turned on should all act the same way. When any of these 3 types of vector layers are put into a pre-comp, the continuously rasterize switch will need to be turned on for the pre-comp in order for the layers to remain crisp. However, this can complicate things (especially when using cameras) because the continuously rasterize toggle actually has two jobs. The other is "collapse transformations". I wish this weren't the case because it can cause many headaches, but there should be a way to fix the issue you're having. While this isn't my video, I think it explains what you need well: ua-cam.com/video/Ns41v75th_I/v-deo.htmlsi=DSKM0uDENkhJ9Wjt Hope that helps and glad to have you as a subscriber! 😀
This is the best keyframes video I've seen so far. I've subscribed
Thanks! Glad to have you 😀
I wasn’t able to find a good tutorial uploaded recently but thankfully I got this as it explained everything perfectly..school of motion had one but was pretty fast paced.. Just one doubt or perhaps suggestion, the preserve transparency option where u made a purple box, maybe if the box was of a different colour it would have made it easier to understand because it got a lot confusing for me what’s the box doing actually… but yeah overall it was a great and a very helpful tutorial. Thanks.
Glad to hear that and thanks for the suggestion!
❤
Cool 🆒
Thank you
what if i have multiple shapes in one layer but i just need one solid stroke from that shape? is it possible?
There are two ways to add a stroke to all the shapes in one shape layer. On the shape layer in the timeline, toggle it open to find the Add button. Click that and choose Stroke. Then make sure this stroke is below all the shapes within the layer that you want to apply the stroke to. The other way to do this is to right click on the layer, go to Layer Styles, then choose Stroke.
Excellent tutorials. You make it easy to follow. Great pacing. Thank you!
Glad to hear that! Thank you!
excellent pace, not to fast, not too slow
Thanks! 😊
@@animation-explained I concur and thank you.
If you move a layer that has a mask applied to it, it will move the entire layer including the mask. But if you wanted to move the image or whatever's being masked but keep the mask in place use the pan behind tool which is up here or it's also y on the keyboard so you can just slide the image like this.
Hey, Is there a way to parent same child to multiple parent layers. Please help
Unfortunately there’s not an easy way to parent the same child to multiple parent layers. What you can do is cut and duplicate the child layer where you want the parent to change (keyboard shortcut is command/ctrl shift D). Sorry I don’t have a better solution!
To be clear on Frames Per Second. 24 is mimicking the mechanical frame rate of a film camera. The whole numbers like 25, 30, 50 and 60 are for streaming. For television 25 FPS and 50 FPS are used in many European countries, we call it PAL. NTSC 29.97 is SD in the US, Canada and Japan, 59.94 is HD. I am a video engineer for SES Satellites and thought I would share some of my knowledge on this. I can't wait to learn more about After Effects! FYI: France and Russia have their own frame rates as well. It is all based on the that countries voltage in their power systems. Ok, I am all done now. haha
Thanks for sharing your insights! 😀
really cool info!
