      Yes, for architecture it is usually focused at infinity. The exception would be when I have an interesting foreground and need to shift focus slightly closer. Remember, this extremely sharp 47mm lens is very wide and has a tremendous depth of field! For anything closer than infinity, just check that depth of field scale to see what will be in focus at each f-stop. It is very accurate. Have fun!

    Some years ago now I talked with the son of a father and son professional photographer business. They had been in the business for years and used mostly "blads". For some reason they desided to test all their lenses, slow day or whatever. They used the professional charts and equipment etc. and did it by the book. They said they were very suprised by the results when the Yashica Mat 124 proved to be better than the Hassblads in every way. Knowing the son and their stong commitment to doing things absolutly "right" I know the test results were correct.

    Been eyeing one of these up for a couple of years now. Finally pulled the trigger this week bundled with a 65mm, 105mm AND Polaroid back. Still getting my head around lens availability, particularly longer lenses (I use longer lenses on my Fuji GFX often for my landscapes)

    • @richardmasseyphotography
      @richardmasseyphotography 9 днів тому

      I also like the compression of longer lenses for landscapes. Although the bellows may seem a limiting factor, don't worry. You can use long lenses with this camera. The way to get the full use out of longer lens is by using a "Top-Hat" lens board. The board is the opposite of a recessed lens board. With it you can achieve about any extension by stacking a series of extension tubes...a must have for close up work! The attached is a sample that is made for a 4x5. There are companies that make the same type for the smaller VH/VHR. Best of luck. www.ebay.com/itm/184941754294?_nkw=Extension+lens+board+for+Horseman+VHR+6x9+camera&itmmeta=01J6KBHG7A8YXAV47AY8VPC5NB&hash=item2b0f6337b6:g:nlsAAOSwR6BbvuZZ&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAABEHoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKnt59G3qM3Cu%2FzsGpqhfWn1Tb4SRnpcLE5piAD0ySdOuU0A0OYs8cKhCgFj%2BHBFLINEgHgui2M0bt3Y4nZ22Ugny29f0Jej0kbqdF4%2F4Smx2cxjK7WVcHe4GNnb%2BUZHfAERokEIEeO9ly9RjlG3U5WEbmDNzbbdEKUtJOXY47ux3WOcT%2FZ78pSdMHoxnN0muOkGucqFvldkEi9Y8xd7KFC%2FhAKT7dnJ4RoxFo%2F5mJzLuAYI38W21NIvSv%2FaacMI1CtNWYoJpZ2hG9WcJsBNFuW24QP7lYGHOSGKJS%2F%2BjYi216ZF5LEUTt%2Fv4pPCAWTOjMKAX8BTkWsWX4QZDVVR8%2Fca%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR-CDxuu0ZA

    I just checked the manual. The shutter actuation counter counts 1 per 10 shutter actuations. So if your camera says 94, then the shutter has been actuated 940 times. That is about 117 rolls. The manual says the shutter should be serviced every 5000 actuations (or when the counter reads 500).

    Hi Richard Slowly the project budget for a VH is coming together. In watching your video again on the VH, I noticed more details that matter in my planning. I also thought that I (and possibly others) would enjoy a video on how the many in-camera adjustments can be used. It would be great to see them through the view change (using your digital video adapter). One example of use for each type of adjustment would be enough. That would leave you able to teach more about on site composition (eg your example in this video about wildflowers and tilt) in your in person courses. A second thought for a video is how to identify potential lenses suited to the VH. You show one on a top hat in the video. That could be another case for a live video while you show some lens options. really respect your work, David

    Hi Richard, Thanks for this very nice review of a fabulous camera and kit. I found you through your video on Horseman 6x9, - which really appeals to me (for technical quality). However, this Mamiya outfit probably provides 3X the lenses and finders for the same money. However, if one wanted an image with 1:3 ratio, I suppose half of the Mamiya negative would be unused? I’m also mindful that 6x6 was/is the chosen format of MANY iconic landscape images. It would be nice to see a ‘compare and contrast’ video on the pros and cons of each outfit. Thanks so much for all your YT teachings. It’s easy to recognize you have an encyclopedic back-story of all things photographic. You can’t professional maturity, and it’s a joy to observe it in people such as yourself. More power to you, Richard. Phil, Vancouver Island

    • @richardmasseyphotography
      @richardmasseyphotography 16 днів тому

      Thanks for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. Both cameras have their advantages. The Mamiya is faster and easier to use and as you mentioned, it has a good selection of lenses and accessories. If working fast is important to you the Mamiya is an excellent choice. On the other hand, the Horseman VH is a much more versatile precision technical camera. Why I prefer it: It also has a wider variety of precision lenses and accessories. You can use top quality lenses from other manufactures. My most used lens is the compact Nikkor W 105mm. One feature that makes it so special is that it has both front and back movements as well as a rotating back. I have several interchangeable roll film backs for it...everything from 6x6 to 6x9. That large 6x9 format is much preferred for landscapes and architecture. having the ability to change formats mid-roll, or from b&w to color is a blessing. If you prefer a camera that is much faster to use but still offers the same features as the VH, look at the Horseman VHR. The R stands for rangefinder. It is a VH but with the added advantage of a rangefinder. I hope this helps.

      @@reusedisland1904 Very interesting question. I use the Topcon 65mm that came with it. Keep in mind this camera uses a fairly small lens board. I believe you could use a wider lens but the bellows would be so compressed that you wouldn't be able to have any movements. I believe I could fit my 47mm Schneider Super Angulon on it. The depth of field on that lens is so great that I could use the ground glass to focus on a subject about eight feet away, lock the lens in place, set the aperture to f/8, drop the front rail and have an awesome 6x9 point-n-shoot camera. Everything from about four feet to infinity would be in focus!

So I would like to know if there is a serialnumber or name for a compatible focusing back and sheetfilmholder, maybe integrated in one part not two? Thanks in advance!

      Thanks for reaching out. Most of these come with a ground glass back for precision focusing and composing. The ground glass has a built-in folding protective cover. Remember, all accessories that fit the VH & VHR will fit the Convertible. In most situations, using the scale on the lens to estimate focus is quite accurate. Remember, the lens is a quality wide angel with a generous depth of field. The ground glass has an integrated Graflock-type back that allows you to focus on the ground glass and then easily slide in (under the ground glass) your sheet film holder...just like Speed Graphic. All accessories can be found on eBay and other such sites. Just do a google search. I hope this helps.

It appears that it is only rarely included in VH sales on auction sites. Does it support the use of the reflex viewer on one port and the film back on the other? I noted your remarks about loving the reflex viewer, and can imagine why... or at least why I would too in this subtropical zone - high light levels and hot temperatures under the dark cloth. regards David Hine

      Hi David. Nice to hear from you. The VH (vertical/horizontal or very handy) is an amazing system that incorporates a rotating back. When on a tripod there is no need to turn the camera. The VH-R is a VH body with that incorporates a rangefinder. Here is a link to owners manual. If it is helpful, send Butkus a thanks/donation. Any additional questions, don't hesitate to contact me. www.cameramanuals.org/prof_pdf/horseman_vh-r.pdf

    I have a brown leather case for the Rollie SL 66, A lens adaptor like the one you have it’s all metal and I also have a 67 mm filter adaptor to Rollei Bayonet lens. I also have a body cap and a rear lens cap as well.😊

    Looks like you’re missing the grip for the SL which makes that camera a joy to use. It’s funny but I still have the leather case and that lens adapter for the SL which I didn’t sell with my camera. I also had the actual Rollei case which housed the 50,150 and extra back. It was a joy to use but nice adaptation of the Hassy back. That kit brings back good memories. I loved working with that camera. Regards Gerry

    In 2001 I met a guy who was starting his own photography business. He had some Nikon 35mm stuff but knew that he was going to need some medium format equipment as well. I think that he got some sticker shock when he started to look into used MF and really didn't know where to go. I said that I knew of a great camera system but had no "Impression Ratio" at all. Impression Ratio was a term that we invented at our university student photography department to indicate the level of "I really want that!" there was on a particular camera or lens. The coming Canon R1 (1R?) would have an extremely high Impression Ratio in 2024. In 2030, not so much. Anyway the camera was the Mamiya C330. A tough, well made camera with interchangeable, and excellent leaf shutter lenses. More to the point I said that he could get a used body, three lenses AND get change from $1000, which he did. As much as we are all gear heads, in a commercial business you don't make any money until you pay for the camera, and sometimes I think that gets lost. He got a C330, a wide angle, normal and short telephoto lens for that $1000 and paid for it with a little over one wedding's profit. He didn't have to worry about shooting off sync with flash (leaf shutter), and the optics, while cheap at that point would and did rival the Zeiss lenses on Hassleblad. The downside was the parallax problem when shooting close up when you're looking through one lens while the taking lens is seeing something else. I had been given a box of crap by another photographer who was cleaning out stuff including a Mamiya Paramender (I think that's what it was called). Look it up. I gave it to him and it fixed that problem and he did more than a few macro shoots with it. Of course there's a reason that SLR's survived and TLR's didn't. No interchangeable backs, so no Polaroids. You didn't actually see what the taking lens sees. And so forth. But the C330 took great pictures, it made him a lot of money, and no photographer was even slightly slightly impressed with any of this.

    Really enjoy your channel. I had a few 330's back when they were new. Eventually sold them off they just weren't my cup of tea. I found them a bit slow and fussy compared to my Rolliflex TLR's or my Hasseblad. However, they get the job done and their wide angle lens is pretty decent - especially for the price.

      Thank you for taking the time to comment. I certainly appreciate it. Yes, compared to your Rollei TLR they are pretty clunky but for 330 fans the interchangeable lens option makes up for it.

      Congrats on purchasing this amazing camera. I'm sure you will love it. Thanks for taking time to comment. That could be an interesting little video...especially since no one has heard of this! In addition to making a straight shot, it is a good method for making panoramas by simply shifting the lens side to side. Of course, the main advantage is being able to tilt the lens down for increased depth of field without the need to use the smaller f-stops. Don't hesitate to let me know how it works for you.

    • @AngusFindlay
      @AngusFindlay 2 місяці тому

      That's exactly what had popped into my head - Shifting the lens for panoramas, rather than using a much more expensive shifting back and 4x5 camera. Once I have some work assembled, we'll have to compare notes!

      @richardmasseyphotography 2 місяці тому

      @@AngusFindlay I always look forward to hearing from you. I would like to suggest that when you start doing panoramas, rotated the back into the vertical position. The common tendency is to use a horizontal position and just overlap two or three images. By having your camera in the horizontal and overlapping 4 or 5 images the file sizes will be remarkably better.

    My favorite TLR series😊 One thing you may find interesting - I have used both the native prism options and found them... lacking. It turns out with a cheap 3D printed adapter, you can use Hassie and Kiev 88 prism. I have a metered Hartblei/Kiev 88 45-degree prism on mine and I doubt I'll ever take it off. Great video!

    Hi Richard Your video really struck a chord with me. After lots of looking around, everything from the Ysolette to the Texas Leica, you talked about enjoying composing on the ground glass. Learning by studying and close observation rang so true. I plan to get a VH in a couple of months. Then I can start up the learning curve and enjoy the view as I go.

    Richard! I love my Yashica! Did you know Davy Crockett Used one of these Yashica cameras during the siege of the Alamo in 1836!? Using just one roll of Kodak Eastman 5222 black and white 35mm motion picture film he shot enough sprocket holes to stave off General Santa Anna and his army of 2000 men for THIRTEEN DAYS! Thank you so much for sharing! More people need to learn about the Yashica and its rich AMERICAN history of nearly 200 years. The Yashica mat 124G has 2 loading marks that you match with the arrow on the film when loading the film, a Green arrow on the bottom of the camera and a red arrow on the back which is the one that you used in the video, the green mark labelled 12 frames is for 120 film, and the red one labelled 24 frames is for 220 film, 220 film is no longer made so far as I am aware so you should use the green mark on the camera bottom for your 120 film.

      Thank you for your informative comment. Much appreciated. I know better but certainly wasn't clear about it this time. In the previous video, I did detail it correctly. I'll see if I can go back and clarify it. Although 220 has long been discontinued, I still have many rolls that I use frequently. My go-to film is Portra 400. I was pleasantly surprised! to learn that by rating it at 320 the exposures are still pretty consistent...such a forgiving film!
