Documenting my journey to create a food forest in suburban Sydney, Australia.
Visiting Ben's Rare Tropical Fruit Trees Collection in Sydney, Australia
Recently visited Ben's amazing rare tropical fruit trees collection here in Sydney, Australia.
Sydney is at most subtropical so Ben is really pushing the climate where these trees can grow.
Over many years, he has collected a lot of rare varieties that are not available at commercial nurseries.
He's also a master in grafting everything from stone fruits to the tropicals.

I'm blown away by the amount of fruit trees Sandeep is growing here in Western Sydney just a few minutes from my house. He also has extensive knowledge about growing these trees. He grafts most of the fruit trees himself to extend the season and experiment with new fruits. Be sure to check out Sandeep's tips on growing Persimmons. Culprit Found - What Was Eating the Persimmon Tree New Growth
I’m planning to grow avocados I’m in hills, I have only spots where there is not full sun shaded spots would you recommend
Hi, they'll do well in the morning sun for 4 - 6 hours and perfect drainage (water shouldn't stay still around them ever). How much sun do these spots get?
Great video! Doug has a fantastic collection. I subscribed to your channel and looking forward to check out your videos. Cheers! Greetings from the Fraser Coast QLD. Ewa
Thanks for subscribing and watching. Fraser Coast is a beautiful place with so many options to grow amazing things.
Beautiful garden Ben 👏 Keep it up Cheers
Guyana has the tastiest babana, we call it paprika babana or sweet fig banana, it's thin skin and yellow inside. I don't know the scientific name
Ok no idea. I've 10 varieities but different ones. It's very difficult to bring new fruits specially bananas here.
Can you please visit my garden I do have 35 varieties of tropical fruits plants/trees Please let me know how to contact you I'm in sydney
Hi Vivek, I'd love to visit your garden. Pls see my msg on Facebook.
I d0 have similar organic garden mine do nothing garden Nearly 50 years old garden pl come and visit Western Sydney
❤❤❤👌🏻👌🏻
Please guide us what kind of soil mixture you use for mango plants.
In the ground or pots? I'd go with at least 40% sand, 10 - 20% perlite and remaining compost. Also depends on your local soil type.
Re: Cotton candy : What I would do is take a sickle and threaten it and give it a small cut. Sounds silly, but works like a treat. I did it to my pear tree who had me fooling for years. Then my sister told me to do this. Our grandmother used to do it the cocoa plants back in India apparently 😀
Hmm you might be referring to cincturing. It can induce flowering but Sandeep's issue is lack of fruit set. I suspect this is due to flowering at the wrong time (August) instead of Spring.
I may suspect cot n candy may need more chill hours or Need a suitable pollinator..
Another great vid !
Thanks for watching.
some rapid-fire uploads! Lets go Mr B!
haha thank you sir. Nothing to do with the time off.
Awesome to see you visit Ben's place! I've been following him for a while now. I'm in Sydney too and have been really getting into subtropical/tropical fruits over the past year starting with germinating seeds. I'm further east in a near-coastal microclimate (Zone 11a!) so don't even have frost and haven't gone below ~5C or so in winter the past few years. I have a hunch you could grow almost anything tropical in my area but unfortunately I'm in a situation where I can't/have limited ability to grow in-ground so everything is in pots for now. Ben is definitely a real inspiration for those of us in Sydney to show the limits of what you can grow!
Wow sounds like a great microclimate even for pots.
Just saw this, thanks for the kind words! I think we’ve got a great climate in Sydney that allows us to do a lot from temperate to subtropical. You should do a video and show us your potted collection :)
@@sydneyfruitgardening happy to go to @TheEdibleLab's place for another tour video.
Great tour! I love the passion for gardening and the type of trees
Thanks for watching. More tours coming!
Thanks for sharing Sandeep. Your knowledge and thought you put into growing is amazing.. understanding your own microclimates is what it’s all about. I grown a few subtropicals in Eastern Sydney so this kind of knowledge is like gold! Thanks for filming Desi
Wow "Sapote Saporium" is watching my videos. Hi Alistair, thanks for watching. What are you growing these days? No updates on your channel for quite some time.
The leaves of the white mulberry are apparently edible too!
Yep some people use to make tea for anti-inflammation
Hi I have two lychee plants one is Kwai mai pink its almost 4 years old but not growing a little but becoming less and less by time can you give me some tips on how to grow lychee I am in Sydney too
Hi Sana, lychees need very specific conditions otherwise they'd not grow well. Protect them from direct sun (specially afternoon), provide plenty of water and mulch heavily. Have a look at this video for some ideas: ua-cam.com/video/iwoD9ZhHQcg/v-deo.html
I have a lot of trouble with QLD Fruit Fly. Tried many things, ended up in buying an insect netting from Bunnings. Unfortunately it is made a hard or thick plastic and is not easy to cover my fruit trees, tomatoes, etc. I am looking for a soft netting like tulle that I can manipulate to what ever shape I like. Where do you get your netting? It looks soft and maleable.
I've got heavy duty netting from Daley's online nursery. Other cheaper option is to get custom size netting from Greenpatch Organic Seeds. I'd suggest getting a big roll from Greenpatch and cutting it yourself. Smaller sizes can be used for veggies and bigger cuts could be used for fruit trees. No other option to prevent fruit fly in urban settings.
@desidownunder2085 Desi, thanks for getting back to me, I so appreciate it. Can you give me the dimensions of the roll, I have a lot to cover. Thanks, and merry Christmas 🎄 from me.
@@Verna-m3i Try following link. They have option for 3m or 6m width and you can select the length. greenpatchseeds.com.au/products/vege-net-vegetable-netting-6m-wide-cut-per-metre Maybe get one 3m x 6m and one 6m x 6m. That'll give you some idea when putting on fruit trees. After initial order, you can get more. I like the 3m width because it's cheaper and I keep most trees smaller. 6m width is good for more vigourous trees like peaches.
Come out of the house and start digging! Fantastic video guys. From the central west of WA.
Thanks for watching :)
New subscriber here, thank you for sharing❤😊
Thanks for subscribing and watching :)
Hi can you do a vedio about growing jackfruit...
Hi, where are you located? Generally speaking, jack fruit won't do well in Sydney or further South.
We are in newcastle area
@@akhilakurian8300 I don't have much experience in Jackfruit but I doubt it'll do any good even in Newcastle unless you've a great microclimate. I'd just go with free draining soil and a ton of mulch to start with.
Hey Desi, love the channel mate, i live in penrith and have 80 trees and vines and the lowest i got was 2 deg im not sure where sandeep lives in western sydney but -4 is crazy cold for sydney wow
Thanks mate. Would love to come over and see your place. Sandeep is very close to my house but he seems to have some extreme microclimate (reserve at the backside and winds) causing lower temps. I suspect it's cold but not -4c. That'll kill most tropical plants if not protected. On the other hand, he's able to grow a lot of high chill stone fruits which I can't.
No they have cutting grown jamun right now too
Oh yes I've noticed after the video. Daley's sell the cutting grown Jamun plants.
I am not a gardener: Your fruit trees look great! Does wolfbane herb deter stink bugs maybe? (Deep Green Permaculture - Melbourne)
Almost all houses in our area has some Citrus tree. Even if try controlling the stink buys, there are just too many breeding populations in the neighborhood that can overwhelm all defences. I didn't capture that part but his neighbor's tree was full of stink bugs as they don't control them.
Great video 👍🏼 I really enjoy the tours.
Thanks for watching!
Is there any other way to contact as the website is not working cheers
Hi Andrew, Asher has been unable to fix his site so you can contact directly at 0488 200 698
How is the flavour? Do you also have the Indian guava?
I've 7 different varieties including red-flesh Indian Allahabad (that's what the nursery called it). I prefer the Indian variety over this China Pear. This is pretty good but not as tasty as the Indian variety. I also love the cherry guava varieties "Strawberry" and "Yellow".
Nice - how much do you pay for the mulch / truck or it free?
I've never paid for mulch truck. Just contact one of the arborists in my area and they always need to dump the existing mulch for a new job.
Thanks for video. Sydney is a big place with all sorts of dif low temperature during winter. What kind of winter low temperature this gets? Is it planted in any microclinate that gives more favourable environment for this papaya tree?
Hi Dan, we get down to 2 - 3c for a couple of weeks in Winter. No frosts in last 4 years at least. This papaya is in a pretty exposed area with cold winds. I was sure of its demise so completely ignored it. Had a bit of damage in winter but still survived and produced fruits. I've now buried its seeds all around the garden. Hope to get more of these.
@@desidownunder2085thanks for taking the time to reply. I also planted a papaya tree bought from daleys in my wollongong property. This is the first time. I have planted where it can get max sun during winter. Problem is same place get so summer hot 🔥 right now some leaves are yellowing 😢
@@Dan-gt1ds better put on some shade cloth. No problems with the tree in this video but all younger trees are currently getting sunburnt.
Good seedling collection. Good to see you getting into the sapotes, I think they will do well here. Canistel has done alright for me.
Thanks Ben. I already have some grafted White Sapotes doing very well here. Canistel seedlings are already outside (partial shade) with no issues. The green and ross sapotes didn't like sun so leaving them in complete shade for some days.
Thank goodness, you don't have that useless thing called 'lawn' in your frontyard.
Hello chỗ bạn khí hậu giống chỗ tôi khí hậu ấm ,rất nhiều sâu và bo cánh cứng phá hoại cây ăn trái và hoa màu .cây giống của bạn rất tốt .
Hi, I don't have too much insect damage probably because of diversity of the trees. Biggest pest here is fruit fly so I've to cover all fruits
Nice collection you got there. Had a chuckle when you commented on the size of the jabos, I had a similar reaction when I received mine.
These things are very slow growing. Let's see how well they do here in Sydney.
Oh wow I just came across your UA-cam! Awesome work
Thanks!
Nice papaya tree volunteer :)
Things you try to grow but fail and then pop up on their own. Papaya is one of those....
Personally, I find some extra satisfaction when I get a volunteer plant that I like🌱 It's like a gift :)
Good to know you can chop lychee down
His climate is suitable for lychees and this tree is quite mature so cutting down won't kill it.
Interesting. I need to know which variety of papaya that is. Thanks for sharing.
Hi George, this is just a red papaya from supermarket. Probably grew from food scraps I bury around the garden. I've now planted a lot of seeds from one of these fruits all over the place now. By the way, Doug showed me Broadleaf Papaya which has done very well in cold for him up in Brisbane (down to 3 - 4c). I'll try that one here in Sydney as well.
@@desidownunder2085 I tried Broadleaf Papaya, but it didn't survive the multiple 0c's in winter.
I'm growing the red dacca here in Sydney as well, so disappointing it's not doing well. My dacca was growing well last summer, but after winter, it died back to a tiny plant again. I'm going to keep trying and will cover it this winter, and see what happens.
It doesn't die back at my place (Blacktown Area, Western Sydney) but it had problems with "choking". The bunch doesn't come out properly and starts rotting inside the trunk. It also suckers a lot which I have to remove. I'll probably plant some suckers in other locations and ignore :) Where about are you located?
@desidownunder2085 I'm in the Sefton area. How old is your plant now? My plant is only 1 year old and was by itself before but now has a few shoots. Did you find out why the banana chokes? I had rotting inside the stem as well, but it is growing back now. I saw a guy put mesh around his banana crop and filled it with hay to keep them warm during the winter months. I will try that technique when the cold hits.
@@roselavender2222 apparently dwarf varieties (like this one) choke because of colder weather. It's over 2 years old now. I don't get much die back but found choking for the first time. I have around 9 other varieties so not interested in giving it more love. ☺
Amazing! How he has grown so many different fruit trees in a small area and everything is doing so well. Love this. ❤can we know which part of Brisbane?
I'm in Camira in the western suburbs.
Does he have "lanzones" ? Thanks.
Brisbane has a similar climate to us in Durban, although we're slightly warmer and I bet they don't have to fight any monkey's for fruit😂 Thanks for this video, I've subscribed

@loulou3472 the only way I've found is to net susceptible trees. It's a pain but worth it for the fruit!
