POTA set up. A short video of my set up when I use my car to operate from.
I used to chill at that park years ago.
It's a great park, when we lived in the area I used to go for runs starting there along the trail that goes next to the Hudson. Thanks for watching 73
Nice to see you back
@@wisestevew9 thanks! I got a 3D printer so I've been busy tinkering with that instead of radios 😆
Does just one power the 7300 or does it take all three of those parallel
If you want to run it at 100W then yes you would need all three of these particular batteries in parallel or one battery of over 21 amps. You could almost do it with two of these, but to be safe all three. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the video. I am a new G90 owner. I am thinking of doing POTA. Even if I don't officially do POTA I plan to operate mobile in a few parks in NC with some high peaks just for fun. Thank you. Ed, KM4MMD
You should give it a go if you are at the park anyway. You can activate from the car, no need to even set up as we did if you don't want to. Thanks for watching, 73s
I love the dogs :)
They are great company when doing a POTA activation. Thanks for watching.
Woww
Amazing little transceiver from Elecraft for CW. 5 watts, built in antenna tuner, approximately six inches by 4 in and about 2 in thick with a tiny plug in paddle, it even record's the QSOs so if you can't write a log you still have a recording to refer to. the built in battery should last all day with 5w output CW. color me impressed!
I'm bummed out I missed you!
Next year! 😄
Good to Eyeball QSO w/ u at Hamvention. 73 de N8NMG
Yes, good talking to you and thanks for subscribing to my little channel.
Wet, muddy, standing in lines, elbow to elbow with others, after driving 3 hours, burning gas, overpriced vendors for food lodging, you can have it, hasnt changed since the 70s...
LoL, yeah but I'll do it again next year 😆
Love the live streams, but usually watch after... lol
Very busy first day, I think attendance is up on last year. Really muddy swapmeet but lots to see. Live stream tomorrow if there's enough interest.
Question: You mentioned at level 3 that you bring the IC-7300 radio. You also mentioned that you bring along three 10 Ah batteries so you can run your 7300 at 400 Watts. So I am guessing that you just forgot you are also taking along a amp to get 400 Watts?? Also, can you tell us where you got that "tent" to protect your radio or computer?? Thanks! Enjoyed the video!!
No I just run it barefoot at 100 watts. I don't even run an amplifier at home. I find a hundred Watts is plenty at this phase of the solar cycle. I might buy an amplifier at some stage though for the home shack to help me bust through those rare DX pile ups 😆 I don't think I mentioned running 400w, but if I did I misspoke. Edit: the tents you can find on Amazon. Search for mini tent or "head tent" apparently some people use it on the beach to put their head in 😆 Thanks for watching 73
Love it 👍👍
Nice one 👍👍. 73s
If you want a scanner, buy a scanner. They need to quit selling unlicensed people these radios. - a ham
It's definitely a problem these getting into the hands of people that don't know what they are doing. I am a licensed ham radio operator though.
I think you should do detailed and long form vids about how things work and etc.
I agree however it takes a long time to put together and edit the long videos and I don't have the time. Also the long videos I've done tend not to do that well! It's a lot of effort for a few views but I'll do it if people are interested. What aspect of it are you interested in?
@@Only_Hams @Only_Hams actually, you dont have to spend time on editing. Just going outside with a camera and giving all that knowledge is more than enough. Im willing to learn how those antennas works and pretty much anything related to this field and thank you for sharing this with internet.
@@guyonadino I was thinking of doing some live streams, I can answer questions, show people whatever they want to see etc. no editing that way either!. I'll be at Hamvention in Dayton this weekend so I thought I might live stream there.
Hope we met on the air waves, 73s WONM
I'm sure we will, 73
Is that the VHQ Hex?
No, it's one of NA4RR's. The VHQ is great as well though, very well built from what I've seen.
Good to know. I'll be using a G450A as well with my hex although I'm in PA so the stop might be elsewhere.
Ah okay cool, it was something I thought about just before I put the rotator on so I thought others might be interested to take note of it. Thanks for watching.
Once ..i heard that kind of communication with a just an audio amplifier module,i think it was tda 2004 with auxiliary cable unbuged, but it was a verry low and not clear sound, knowing that i was 16 klm far from an airport.i wasn't indending to listent to any thing,ot was accidental. any explanation?
If you are close to a transmitter even a rusty piece of metal can act as a diode and it's possible to hear AM radio signals, that's how crystal radios work so yes absolutely you could have picked up something from the tower ATC (Air Traffic Control) as they use AM on your audio amplifier.
Interesting how those "Hex" beams work, how much gain does the beam produce?
Around 5,6dB.
About two bus tires worth , or a 24,000 mha solar panel worth ,, Take your pick 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
@@Dallas-Rife-UDX-347-Tennessee 🤣👍🚎💨💨💨💨💨💨💨
That’s super cool!
Thank you and thanks for watching. I'll make a video of raising it back up so make sure you subscribe!
They seem to work VERY well for such a relatively compact setup.
They really do , the most impressive part is the front to back ratio is amazing, you can really attenuate stations behind you. It has pretty good gain without having to mount it very high. It's about 31ft up on this tower. So for 20m I think it models for around 5.5dB of gain and 20dB attenuation on the back of the beam.
I run a cubicle quad, and it's the front to side ratio that is really great with that. But having gained you can rotate is so beneficial . Hope to catch you on the band's sometime, GI0UTE
@@dieseldes6578 I actually have worked you a couple of years ago LOL, I remember looking you up on QRZ and seeing the quad 😆 . Great antenna. 73
I just made another short video with a little more detail if people are interested.
Great explanation in short form content keep up the good work I've already subscribed
Thank you, and thanks for watching 73.
Very cool. I always considered antennas magic! Your eyes 👀 are antennas!
Yes, exactly. If are eyes were resonant at radio frequencies we could the wires glowing! I've always found it useful to think about antennas that way, it makes everything make sense to me. Thanks for watching 73.
Did ya use a truck to stand that thing up?
I have a winch attached to the building.
I’m in the process of building me one now
@@e-racer4673 I built one using Walmart fishing poles (I think the brand was Black widow?) , it was mono band for 20m. It worked so amazingly well I bought this one from NA4RR and I'm really happy with it.
Finishing up a VHQ Hex; built like a tank. I have 2T Harbor Freight winch I switch out to a couple of masts for easy raising.
It's a pleasure, I'm a young amateur radio operator, and there are no people my age that I know who are interested in radio
There are a few younger people interested in it but they are few and far between unfortunately. Have you looked at youths on the air? youthontheair.org/
@@Only_Hams Thanks for the information, I'm French I just got my license. I'm waiting for my call sign now
@user-ry2px8vp2e that's awesome, I hope you have a lot of fun on the air.

This is about as much information as I can share in one minute to make antenna theory simple. I know it leaves a lot but it does make it pretty easy to get the gist of how they work. If I had time I would have added you can think of frequency like color. In fact it's the same thing color shifts are different frequencies of light, light and radio waves are the same thing they are just on different parts of the spectrum. Receiving radio waves is merely the reverse of this. The only other thing I would add without writing a whole novel is certain frequencies absorbed by the atmosphere others it travels through the atmosphere and others it is refracted by the atmosphere.
Number 4 what brand ?
It's a Yaesu FT-70D
Oh come on. You got tired of dropping and lifting it? Lol
😄 Oh I'm sure I'll have to drop it again before too long.
I have to do some maintenance on my hexbeam to
At least they are lighter than a full size trapped yagi !
Get it 💪🏼
I got it! 😁
So were all of those words English
About half of them 😄. Those who know, know 😉 But seriously, I'm a ham radio operator (I talk to people over the airwaves for fun) I took down my antenna (hex Beam) because I need to change the motor (rotator) that turns it for pointing it in different directions.
What do you listen to on it? I see one every now and then...
I use it for several shortwave bands, I'm a ham radio operator so I talked to people all over the country and the world with it.
Having installed antennas & dishes on those types of towers-- curious why it was disassembled rather than simply climbing it?
Well a few reasons, The weight of carrying or lowering the hex (probably on my own, having to go up and down the tower so many times, I wanted to paint the spreaders while I have the thing down but the number one reason is I got half way up and found although I used to do contracting where I would climb stuff all the time I found out in my 50s I've become scared of heights 😄 I even bought the harness etc. to do it. It is designed to tilt over anyway, It just makes me nervous 😬
Getto ham opperator???😢
Lil' bit 🤣. Grew up fairly poor so I've always been inclined to do everything myself. To a fault 😄 want a faster car? put a bigger engine in rather than buying a faster car, want to work DX? Build a winch down tower mechanism. It's both a blessing and a curse.
I feel like this is the radio equivalent of one I have to do an engine out on my 86, I know what I'm doing and I have the jack attachments to drop it, but it's so nerve racking to do so it gets done in slow motion and triple checking everything
Yep, I understand completely, I did 2 swaps because I wanted to do it myself and not pay someone. No garage, outside, no engine winch, balancing it on a trolley jack 🤣
Well done!!!!
Thanks and thanks for watching.
Nice
Thanks for watching. I'm putting together a longer video of what I did to make this, so make sure you're subscribed.
Already have some. Very good case.
I agree, thanks for watching.
This is so me 😂
I hear you!
Do you have a link for that steering-wheel desk?
