    As a prof, I don't advise trying to schedule outside office hours. Just come to office hours, you'll be one of the few there and you'll be heard. Profs are super busy which is why we schedule specific times. All the other tips were great. I may show this to my students.

    The thing I'm having trouble with is finding key terms to make my searches more specific. Sometimes, I don't know enough about a topic to know a term to search for. I've been thinking of using wikipedia to help me learn more terms with a subject but sometimes it's not enough. My researching can go on longer than I have to finish my paper and I can barely find one relevant article.

      If you find yourself in this situation, take a look at papers that are reference in your area of study and take a note of the keywords used. Then search a thesaurus/vocabulary of authorized terms you can find related terms or synonimous that also have a certain amount of consensus. This might help.

    Hello I found this very helpful as I have been struggling with finding research that is accessible. However I have two areas where I need help, Please could you help me with info on how to find reviews for a article in order to critique it, it's taking me hours? My next struggle is how to identify research that is significant in the field I.e psychology? Thanks in advance

    • @excitedaboutlearning1639
      @excitedaboutlearning1639 Рік тому

      I'm sorry for the late reply. Your criterio "significant in the field of psychology" is way too broad. You'd need to define it further. Are you talking about the subfield of social cognition? Maybe, you're talking about memory and processing of information in which case cognitive science would be the right field. After you're sure about the main subfield, then you'd need to think about the main recent questions that you're trying to find answer to. Only be defining the main questions and fields, can you even begin to identify what research is significant for (let alone relevant to) your questions.

    Do professor offices usually have a seat for students to sit or is it usual for students to simply stand the whole time?

    • @reidpattis9478
      @reidpattis9478 5 років тому

      Some do, though most of the office hours I have been to in the past 4 years have little to no seats.

    • @WordswithBarbara
      @WordswithBarbara 5 років тому

      It depends. Many offices are small, but in my experience there is a seat for the student. If a student has a quick question, then he or she might choose to stand, but especially if you have made an appointment with the professor, it is normal (in America) to come in and sit down.

    Is this a broad or narrow thesis statement (the first phone i got was Samsung. Sometimes i feel it is both broad and narrow thesis statement

    • @WordswithBarbara
      @WordswithBarbara 6 років тому

      Hmmm. What type of paper is this? Is it an argument-based paper? It would help to know what the assignment was. Generally, a thesis is a statement that you will then make a case for. What you have written is more or less fact so you are mostly left to just write a personal story. Does that make sense? I can better guide you if I know the assignment. Hope this helps.

    I still don't understand the definition or concept of contextualize.

    • @WordswithBarbara
      @WordswithBarbara 6 років тому

      What project are you working on? Perhaps if I know a bit more detail on your paper I can help provide direction. Contextualization is about setting the stage for what you are going to say. It is essentially placing your ideas/arguments in a larger setting so that the reader can understand and fully appreciate their meaning/significance. Think of a movie or novel--every story contextualizes its protagonist at the beginning so that we fully appreciate the struggles he/she goes through over the course of the story. In Lord of the Rings, Frodo is seen as a homebody in the beginning, not at all inclined to adventure. Because the film/book places him in this context at the beginning, we understand how hard his struggles are as he strives to destroy the ring. Does that help?

    For Contextualization in a long essay, what specific information am i suppose to write? Im absolutely lostt on my ap hw LEQ 😭

    • @WordswithBarbara
      @WordswithBarbara 7 років тому

      Hello! Contextualization happens throughout a paper, but for your purposes you want to make sure it is at the beginning--think intro/first several sentences. Let your contextualization give the reader the "so what?" they why-this-matters. You need to situate your reader within the issue/event/idea you are writing about. Think of when you are telling a friend about an interaction with someone else. If you just said "Mary said she uses pink highlighters the most," your listener is probably thinking "...and?", but if you say "Mary is a wiz at analyzing complex information, finding connections, and grouping like-minded ideas. She says the secret to her success is colour coding! And she says she uses pink highlighters the most because studies show that pink draws the eye more than yellow, even though the latter is the most common highlight colour." NOW I know why you are telling me what you are telling me, and you are giving me a reason it is applicable to me right now. Hope that helps!
