Future Goals of True Legacy Design | Statues of Vintage Box Art
Future Goals of True Legacy Design | Statues of Vintage Box Art
www.TrueLegacyDesign.com
This week on the True Legacy Design UA-cam channel Founder & CEO Matthew Smith discusses his passion for vintage toy box art and his mission to show incredible respect to the artwork and artists through a modern medium, specifically sculpting statues and creating 3D printed centerpieces.
Matthew discusses his love for the amazing box art on the toy packaging from his childhood. How that retro toy artwork seemed to leap out of cardboard and transport us into the world of these mythical heroes in the toy lines of the 1980s and 1990s. Often the illustrations on the box art inspired dreams of recreating those scenarios with the toys.
True Legacy's goal is to bring those paintings and illustrations to life in the form of statues and 3D printed centerpieces for vintage toy fans to enjoy. Stoking a sense of nostalgia and wonder at the toys of our youth.
The name True Legacy combines two very important words to the company. “True” meaning the objective standard by which we measure all reality, and “Legacy” in the context of what the original artist meant to leave behind. The goal is to create three statues of box art images. One a true representation of the box art. The second a representation of what that art would look like in reality. And third, a magical hybrid of both.
See this process in action as True Legacy sculptor and artist Travis Tutterow works on True Legacy's first statue to be displayed at Retro Toy Con 2023.

What happened to this massive idea? It was supposed to be a massive diorama with buttons to click your favorite moving parts. Did this idea ever come to fruition?

Its 2am. I’ve gone from Toy Federation to your channel to pixel dan and back here. I had to drop this. Mega Man or Megaman, or Rockman, his original Japanese name. If you gave it the same kind of treatment, not from the figures, but from the game. I see still 3d molded backgrounds of scenes from the 8 or even better 16 bit games with the characters suspended in action poses from the battles. I would die. You could do this with so many games with huge fandomes. Love your work. Keep it up!

I find it strange that the creator guy went in to toy federation and bought up all the moto to start scanning or whatever and i don't recall him acting like he knew the staff or anything but this guy is from toy federation? Also if you can do this and I've seen your artwork, why the hell do you work at toy federation? 🤔

Dude bought all the MOTU 10 months ago, this video is from 5 months ago. A lot of stuff can happen in 5 months. Being an artist as a job might not be for everyone. Can be a major grind and stop being enjoyable. Plus, there's no guaranteed paycheck for most artists.

Now when we look at this work, we bring our experience to it; the experience redefines the innocence; knowledge of art marries knowledge of life and our rediscovery of that which we initially had fallen in love with: toy art as our first brush with ART, as a gateway to the way design, and now a look in a figure's eye can appear more specific; you are handing back to people that initial brush with the infinite. "This stuff spoke to us." It IS powerful. These totems trace the loss of innocence, and once that innocence is gone, an elegance has gone missing, so there is power in recapturing those emotions in a deep way.

I was into the original Star Wars figures, Planet of the Apes figures, the Six Million Dollar Man, the Evel Knievel stunt cycle, Stretch Armstrong, and a few others. The Masters of the Universe came out when I was a little older and wasn't really playing with toys anymore. By then it was BMX bikes and then girls. When MOTU came out all of the Star Wars and GI Joe figures bulked up as well, which most people didn't like. Which is why "The Power of the Force" figure are mocked and have low value these days. It was also when action stars in movies (like Sly and Arnold) were all bulked up.

Wow! This is simply amazing! Heman and the Masters of the universe is my favorite toyline, growing up in the 80s. And seeing the original vintage figures getting blown up in size is mindblowing! And hey, I really do hope you could work out some deal with Mattel to grant you some sort of permit or licensing to produce these guys in this giant scale that you're doing now so that people could actually buy it from you.
