What I loved most about Part 1 was how they gave the ensemble cast enough time to give terrific performances.

In the first movie Peeta said he didn't want the Capitol to change him, at the end of mockingjay part 1 that's exactly what the Capitol did. How tragic.

The book actually borrows heavily from singles and indirect references to America's racial history. For won the district that has the highest peacekeeper population in comparison to the number of citizens in the district so having way more police than any other district in district 11 which also happens predominantly black, those peacekeepers are also known to be far more brutal and aggressive physically and have far more of the citizens arrested and put into forced labour camps for prisons in any other district. And geographically district 11 is around what we would know as Alabama Florida Georgia or Louisiana. One of the midwestern districts that handles transportation has a massive drug addiction problem with morphling which is just a slightly made up variation of morphine. But this is meant to mirror Detroit the motor City which has a serious opioid epidemic. The capital is in the Rocky mountains in around Utah, which is a reference to the somewhat bizarre compared to the rest of the country appearance and lifestyle or behaviors of the Mormons who predominantly populate utah. it's a common stereotype to say that they all tend to look alike and they seem to be out of touch with the rest of the country due to help insulated their religion and many of their towns are within the state. The also to the line when it comes to bizarre cult-like behavior similar to the capital citizens. Perhaps the biggest one is when he gives that speech and says "Panem today, Panem tomorrow, Panem forever", this is a beat for beat a quote from the at the time governor of the state of Alabama during the civil Rights movement. When the federal government officially mandated that all public schools be desegregated Alabama was one of the states that fought hardest against it and the governor of Alabama in a famous speech came out and said that his whole chest ten toes down but Alabama would never get their schools and that their would be no desegregation yelling out "segregation segregation tomorrow segregation forever".... The reason they do the games is several but the primary purpose of it is it keeps the districts in line because after all of this time is the 74th year after all.... But they've been through so much trauma and so many games and children dying as they grew up and will continue to do so, that they Austin garden realizing it have a mindset of yes this is horrible but at least we're only losing two children (obviously they actually use 23 but this is just a reference to how each district would personally feel), the capital of The hunger games have been so effective that this literally feels almost like a mercy compared to just genocide, which really speaks to how effective the capital brainwashing is because they would never do a genocide simply because that would mean they would lose their entire labor force....It also serves to distract the capital citizens while putting a firm barrier between the two populations not just in wealth status freedom education and quality of life but it feeds to the propaganda that Capital citizens genuinely believe that the parents out in all the districts care so little for their children they actively have them volunteer to play in the games they don't really care if their children don't have more. Capital citizens believe that districts townsfolk are barely categorized as human if not fully believe in the air some kind of mutt, they also believe this is why they're so willing to fight in the games because they are just naturally psychologically and biologically more aggressive, that their families don't have a paternal or loving Bond and the parents don't give a s*** if the children die.M mini also fully believe that all of the districts have an attitude similar to districts 1 to 2 and 4 when it comes to wanting to participate in the game and being proud of winning and their standing or their districts overall win-loss record. Also fun fact it's not referenced in the movie at all but in the book The capital actually makes it a point to install a TV in every single citizens house in all of the districts which is crazy considering how absolutely poor and run down a lot of those dwellings are.... But also having a flat screen TV in there, this is not in any way the capital doing my favorite because these TVs well they can be controlled for most of the Year whenever there is a capital announcement or more important than the hunger games start they will begin to play nothing but coverage of The hunger games and they can't be turned off or powered down... So whether someone just is sickened by them or if worst case scenario one of their children grandchildren siblings friends whatever are the tributes for that year they literally can't escape having to see that game., if I recall correctly in some of the districts that have been known to be more rebellious or less responsive to capital punishment, like the districts that have severe drug problems because at this point there too out of it to even really respond to any of the stuff they're looking at... Play the capital has motion sensors embedded in the screens so the capital is able to ensure that the individuals in that house are actively in front of the TV and facing it and watching the games, there is no hiding from it

I think it’s pretty ridiculous how the movie tries to make Gale seem more heroic than he actually was in the book. He got caught with contraband (a turkey) in the book which is still messed up but still.😒
