This point to point trip covered more than 5 miles(8km) of trail, with 11 known Blowdowns. None of the known BD’s required a big saw so we traveled “light” with a Stihl MS-150 & MS-151(both 12” bars-30CM) The tree count at the end of the trip totaled 22 trees and the largest tree was ~18” in diameter.(~46 cm)

With some time constraints we decided to do an out and back hike, using one of the many woods roads, that we have permission to hike on. Normally, unless co-aligned with a trail, woods roads are not maintained by volunteers and to my knowledge are not supposed to be used as hiking trails..

      While this trip was only 3.75 miles(6 km) it included 400’ of elevation gain in the first ~1/2 mile (.8 km). Two days later we did another trip of 4.85 miles (7.8 km) with 650’ of elevation gain. 80% of that gain was in the first .8 miles(~1.25 km), before we even found the first BD. We have spent so much time on storm damage bd’s, the list of normal BD’s that I know of is well over 40 trees in one park & at least a dozen(known) in a second park with many others accumulating on other trails. In addition, there are at least two trails in another park with known storm damage but the number of BD’s has yet to be determined… When are you arriving to help?😊

    Living in the Philadelphia area I have had the opportunity to watch this ship crumble over the years. It has been horribly mismanaged by opportunists chasing nonsense schemes. It should have joined the ranks of the Olympia and Battleship NJ just 2 miles away as a museum ship. The total bs about insurance and homeland security prohibiting tours is maddening. I am horrified at the condition of the hull.

      Unfortunately, there are some real safety concerns as you move thru the ship. These include broken railings, loose and missing grates and tripping hazards, poor lighting, among other things. The location of the ship does require going into a controlled area and we had to supply proper ID, prior to being authorized and escorted into and out of the area..

      The FTA, Florida National Scenic Trail falls under the USFS, so we follow all their requirements for certification. As a Class B sawyer and the Trail is all within Florida I can cut anywhere on the Trail but with my chapter in northern Fla, mostly deal with the northern and panhandle areas. 75% of our damage, last and this year, has been in the center of the panhandle along the Suwannee River.

This included other blowdowns in the area, a live tree that the crown of the bd was leaning against(you can see the standing tree move in the background) and the root ball this blowdown was going to pivoting on. I am located in New Jersey and primarily work in northern NJ and southern NY. However, as an ATC certified sawyer(volunteer) thru NYNJTC I can remove BD’s anywhere on the AT (GA.-ME.) and in any of the Parks that NYNJTC has responsibility to maintain trails. Some parks do require additional requirements to be authorized to clear BD’s. The parks include Federal, State, County and Town parks.. The training is based on USFS (Forest Service) requirements which prohibits the use of top handle saws, among other things. Considering we don’t climb trees, it isn’t an issue and the restriction is based on safety.

    • @brettblack7049
      @brettblack7049 Рік тому

      @briannv9900 I get that. I don't recommend top handles for anything other than in the tree myself, that being said, I've cut some smaller firewood with mine just to give them a workout off season. We had a tornado hit our place 4 weeks ago today, I've cleared/cleared about 30 trees at our place and another 10 at others, it's been a busy 4 weeks when you add the job on top of all that. Storm damage is some of the most dangerous cutting, many homeowners get injured doing cleanup. Have a great week.
