Great review, just finished the series and loved it. I also saw all of your and Evie discussions videos, always fun to hear other people thought and hear things I didn’t pick up on
@@PoorPersonsBookReviewer Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the review and that you listened to me and Evie’s discussions. I agree, it’s great fun to learn about other people’s perspectives on a book/s.
Armadale is amazing. It's such an underrated Wilkie Collins. Gene Wolfe is on my radar, and I hope to pick up his work soon.
@@Dinadoesyoga Armadale is incredibly underrated! It needs more love and recognition. I just recently finished Poor Miss Finch by Wilkie Collins and enjoyed it very much. I’m hoping to squeeze Book of the New Sun into this year but I doubt I’ll be able to.
Thank you for the review. Im currently in the middle of the audiobooks (book 2) and it's one of the most imcredible works of art Ive ever read. I may be ruined on other reading now. 😅
@@Dinadoesyoga Thank you for watching the review! I’m glad you enjoyed it. I definitely understand the feeling of other reading not reaching the same heights of Gormenghast. It really is a spectacular piece of writing. I’d love to know what you’ll think of the next installment.
Great review! Just finished reading it and I loved it!
@@KiriB Yeah!!! That’s fantastic!! I love hearing that others appreciate the ending to this series. It was very poignant and fitting to the characters and themes.
i've been going to the british library a lot lately coz my local library doesn't have the books i want, and sometimes i like going to their shop and browsing the whole Weird collection on the shelves together... whoever came up with the idea is a genius 👻
@@apocalypsereading7117 Agreed! It’s such a shame we don’t have the Weird collection here. The horror selection is so lacking at my local bookstores. This series would be a much needed addition to the stock. Thank you for watching!
There is nothing - and I mean NOTHING - like this series. It is absolutely not for everyone: the prose is dense and Peake flies off on tangents, but if you stick with it it is incredibly rewarding. It also allows him to set scenes that no-one else could get away with - the scene in Gormenghast when the Countess goes to see Dr Prune and her cats accompany her is extraordinary - absolutely ridiculous when one thinks about it, but it fits into the world and is dark and deep and perfect.
@@keithhealing1115 It’s certainly not a series for everyone; that’s for sure. Peake’s writing is truly up there for me. It’s a shame that we’ll never know how the series would have eventually progressed but it was an amazing reading journey nonetheless. I’m actually craving more fantasy like Gormenghast but I doubt I’ll be able to find another that will scratch the same itch. Thanks for watching!
@@marianneguevara8279 The closest I have found is Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrell - although it is completely different. If you haven't read Clarke's next book, Piranesi, do so. It is stunningly beautiful.
@@keithhealing1115 Piranesi is actually on my tbr! I’m planning on getting to it before the end of the year.
Ohhh I'll check these out. I've been coming to love short stories!
@@Thecatladybooknook_PennyD That’s great! I’d love to know which one you choose as your first.
@@marianneguevara8279 I ordered The Face in the Glass and Other Gothic Tales by Mary Elizabeth Bradford. I like to read Victorian lit and she is one of the authors some of my friends have read and loved. I also have my eye on The Platform Edge. But having bought it yet. Lol. Maybe more later!
@@Thecatladybooknook_PennyD Awesome! Face in the Glass was one of the first collections I heard about! I’ve never read from that author but I ought to check her work out.
My favourite from this collection is FromThe Depths which is tales from the sea. Very fun read. Another collection I enjoy although very different is Clice Barkers Books of Blood, highly recommended.
@@milkman2461 I should give that one a look! It might surprise me, like Evil Roots did. And thank you for the recommendation; I’ve yet to read any Barker.
So cool, I'm tempted to look into the one with the creepy woods. But I just can't get into short stories, I'm such a deep commitment kinda reader and the thought of the story ending before it started just puts me off. This is probably a really unhelpful and unfair mindset. But then again: there are endless amounts of novels I want to read and why shouldn't I just continue sticking to them if it works for me?
@@TripleRoux I understand. A lot of people feel the same way. You should certainly prioritize books you want to read. But if you ever find yourself in the mood for some shorter horror giving Weird Woods a try would be great too! Who knows, you might like it ☺️
I'd love to start collecting, but there are so many! I followed along with them polling fan favorites and the top ones were: Our Haunted Shores Holy Ghosts Cornish Horrors Evil Roots Queens of the Abyss Minor Hauntings
@@mattkean1128 Very interesting! Minor Hauntings is actually on the list of ones to get next. Let me know which one you decide to get!
Super interesting, I've never heard of this collection line before. I havent read very many short story collections but my favorites are definitely in the classic horror realm - I'll have to check this out. Great video!
@@OnlyTheBestFantasyNovels Nice to know another classic horror enjoyer! I’d love to know which book you decide to choose for your first Tales of the Weird.
I agree, it felt really flat to me. Not bad or awfully written, just meh. I saw what she was trying to do but it felt too heavy handed. I would love to hear what you would recommend for good cosmic horror novels!
@@TripleRoux When it comes to horror I find myself sticking to the classics. The same goes for cosmic horror, particularly Lovecraft. But, I’m very much willing to try more modern cosmic horror in the future.
Excellent review Marianne!
@@AmandaJHMorton Thank you so much Amanda! Glad you enjoyed it! ☺️
I am sold, thanks for the review! I found the part about the feeling of futility very meaningful, especially when I compare it to what is currently happening in the world and my feeling of helplessness. That's why I love the therapeutic effect of stories, because we get a closed arc and a completion that we seldom get in real life. It helps to stay sane-ish... I found your channel very recently and am really happy about that! Looking forward to all the future goodness coming our way ❤
I've only read the first, but it was amazing 🔥
@@mattkean1128 I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed the first one! I definitely recommend you move on to Gormenghast. It’s probably my favorite of the trilogy 😊
Excellent review! It has definitely moved up my TBR.
@@Thecatladybooknook_PennyD Thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoyed this review. I’d love to know what you think of Gormenghast when you get to it.
I haven’t yet read Engine Summer (though I have it on my shelves). I did write a chapter of my MA thesis on Crowley’s most celebrated novel, Little, Big, which is the most gorgeously-written book I’ve ever read. It certainly touches on a couple of similar themes as what you found in ES, though from very different angles. The Translator, his 2002 novel, is also wonderful, though too rarely read.
@@paulwilliams6913 Very cool that you included Crowley in your thesis! I’ve heard of Little, Big before and a friend of mine plans on reading it so it’s definitely going to be a book I get to in the future. As of right now The Deep will be my next Crowley. It’s his first book so that should be interesting. Thank you for watching and for the recommendation!
Stop giving me other books to read, death will find me before i ever see the end of my TBR list on the horizon...
@milkman2461 If I am doomed to a never ending tbr so will you be! 😆
@marianneguevara8279 I think on my death bed I'm going to regret not giving up on so many medicore or bad books 😅
Glad you did a video on this, Marianne! The language is excellent. Some of my favorite prose tbh. I can't write elaborate descriptions like that, at least I don't try to lol. The soul of fantasy is shown through this book, and I don't think there are many fantasy series that equal it (perhaps the Books of Babel? Lol).
@scoutdarpy4465 Peake had such immense talent when it came to prose! Haha hopefully The Books of Babel continues to impress 😊
You explained and described everything so much better than I ever could! Fuschia still is sticking with me. I love her character and her arc so much.
@SheWasOnlyEvie thank you so much! I’m glad you think my discussion did the series justice. Our talks on the books have been so fun and very enlightening! Fuchsia is a character that is def gonna stick with me for a while!
Oh wow, I was so obsessed with this series as a kid! You've definitely inspired me to go dig them up for a reread; thank you so much!
@ErieMaxwell I’ve heard of others who also read The Gormenghast Trilogy when they were young. Makes me wish I had done so too! Glad I helped inspire you to pick up the series again! I’d be interested to know what you think of it now.
What a great list wow!
@@Talking_Story Thank you and thanks so much for watching! ☺️

@@chloelefeufollet Happy to hear I’ve helped motivate you to pick up The Gormenghast Trilogy! More people ought to read it. And thank you! Evie was incredibly kind for sending it to me ☺️ Thanks for watching!
I just came here to see how long it would take you to mention Babel 😂
@@milkman2461 I did not disappoint 😅
@@marianneguevara8279 you've just got really good taste 😅
You should be a producer with these ideas! Diana Wynne Jones plays with tropes so much, I think switching up animation and live action could work. And we should just have Robert Eggers direct everything.
@@mattkean1128 Thank you Matt! ☺️ I’m glad that you agree with my suggestions and see the potential for a live action/animation Howl’s Moving Castle. Eggers is one of my favorite directors working now and I can’t wait to see what’s after Nosferatu. Thanks so much for watching!
I liked the excerpts you shared. I think there's a lot to learn as a writer from his style, insofar as postmodern books go. I may have to pick it up sometime; I'm still on that search for an author who shares a similar style to me, lol.
Excellent review! The storytelling theme does sound like it could lean meta. I’ve heard of John Crowley before, but I couldn’t tell you of a single book, so great job bringing attention to this one. Sounds like a worthwhile post-apocalyptic read!
@@Johanna_reads Thanks so much Johanna! I’m happy to introduce Engine Summer to more people.

This makes me so happy that you got to meet him and with the entire experience! 💜
@@SheWasOnlyEvie Thank you so much Evie!! 💛I’m still kind of stunned that I actually met him.
Hi Marianne, that is so fun that you got to attend the event and see Josiah! I always feel awkward going up to talk to a speaker after a talk and I imagine I would feel very strange talking to a favorite author in person. I don't know what to say. It has been a long time since I've had those opportunities and know that I'm older I might feel different. In 2015 I read The Man Who Heard the Land by Diane Glancy and I sent her a fan letter. She was so nice to respond by sending me a letter and three of her books!
@@AmandaJHMorton Hi Amanda and thank you! In my case I had plenty of things to say to Josiah. Unfortunately, my anxiety wouldn’t let me say all of it 😅 That’s very sweet that Diane Glancy not only responded to your letter but also sent you some books! She certainly appreciated your admiration for her book! Thanks so much for watching ☺️
this is so cool! i’ve only gotten to meet one author before (brandon sanderson about 7 years ago for the Oathbringer release), and i was so nervous and excited i could barely breathe, so i totally relate to your story! and that’s awesome that you were able to give him your fan art; it’s beautiful and i’m sure he loved it. i wish there were more author events like this, i feel like they are so few and far between. i missed a chance to meet Jay Kristoff earlier this year that i’m still kicking myself for; since he’s from Australia who knows how long it’ll be til he’s back in the states, and he was only like an hour from me, and i only heard about it the NEXT DAY after it happened i’m still not over it. anyways, great video!
@@fabled_scribe Very cool that you got to meet Brandon Sanderson, and yes that was very much how I was feeling too😅 I live in a relatively small town so the chances of an author signing event happening are slim. I’d have to travel to one of the major cities for one, assuming there’s even one going on that has an author I’d love to meet. That’s a shame you missed out on meeting Jay Kristoff. I guess that’s what happens sometimes when you’re a fan of an author from a different country. Hopefully he’ll come back soon, perhaps a book signing tour! Thank you very much for the kind words and for watching!
Wonderful video! 😄 I'm glad you got to meet him. I dunno if I really have a modern author I'd want to meet, lol. I'm a bit too antisocial to go to meet-ups like that; plus I'd probably be too negative for the occasion, haha. But I'm really glad you enjoyed it - and don't worry about your anxieties, I'm sure you did awesome!
@@scoutdarpy4465 Thank you very much! I always have to remind myself to calm down. Haha I just wish my enthusiasm didn’t turn into nervousness in these situations.
I loved hearing you talk about these recommendations! I might have to check out Mockingbird and Miranda and Caliban. I love The Tempest and will point to another obscure retelling by Tad Williams called Caliban’s Hour. It’s a novella told from Caliban’s perspective. Great video!
@@Johanna_reads Thank you so much Johanna! I’m happy to introduce more people to Mockingbird! Any of these titles really. Thank you for the recommendation; I’ll make sure to check out Caliban’s Hour. I’ve never read anything from Tad Williams before so this should be interesting.
Great recommendations, just what I need is more books for my TBR list...
@@milkman2461 Haha aren’t all our tbrs ever expanding? 😅 Thank you for watching; glad you enjoyed!
Mockingbird has intrigued me! =) great premise for a video, when you said no one's heard of them i was like "game on" but yeah, i hadn't heard of any. X] also being framed here between all caps Caesar and Uzumaki is just cool.
@@apocalypsereading7117 Yeah!! I’m glad to introduce more people to Mockingbird. I only know of one other person who’s read it. Haha looking back at the video Ceasae and Uzimaki I certainly eye catching. Just another reason to keep this shelf as the background for videos.
They sound like great books! Mockingbird particularly interests me. I have approached my own humanity through the whims of my reading. I say "whims" because that boils down literature to the impression of emotions as well the intellect. I'm rather biased in my simplicity and I don't usually venture out into uncharted territories, at least not on principle. I keep my understanding simple and precise, and I sit inside the realm of faith. Perhaps even a blind faith, like the sort you'd see in Quasimodo or Tarzan from Disney (I'm still hung up on them, haha). And it's to my benefit, or, to the righteousness of my soul, that I can give myself to such things which may seem inconceivable to others. I always quote Emerson, but it is the conviction one has to the good that invites me the most: and if it is through literature that one comes to understand this, then so be it! 😅 I dunno where I was going with that, haha. But I enjoyed the video!
@@scoutdarpy4465 I’d be very interested to see what you think of Mockingbird. Perhaps you can start it after The Books of Babel haha 😅
Lighting seems fine to me, you look great! These are all unknown to me, I may be picking up the Tempest rework, sounds intriguing! Cool vid :)
@@jackderbyshire Thank you! It was bugging me in the last video. I’m glad to hear that I’ve got you interested in Miranda and Caliban. Have you read The Tempest already? It will be interesting the thoughts of someone who has read the source material before this book. Thanks for watching!
@@marianneguevara8279 I actually listened to a radio production of it!
Thanks so much for sharing your classics shelves, Marianne. I enjoyed your video very much.
Thank you very much for watching!! I'm glad you enjoyed it. My shelves have changed significantly since this video and I plan on filming an updated version in the future.
Tarzan is a great movie. The scenes between Tarzan and Kala make me think of me and my mom. That whole "look at me!" hits a little too close to home. 😅 And the scenes with Jane and Tarzan are sweet, and I agree, Jane is a bit of an oddball herself. Phil Collins is... Phil Collins, haha. My favorite Renaissance movie though is still Hunchback. But in ways Quasimodo and Tarzan are similar since neither really understand society. I'd say I'm more like Quasi; my personality is rather soft in spite of myself, lol. Anyways... Great review! It doesn't surprise me you did a review on Tarzan, lol.
I really enjoy book hauls because you can see lots of different titles in one video. I read Piranesi in 2022 and loved it.
Yes, book hauls are also great for introducing you to titles that you might like. I'm looking forward to Piranesi; I'm glad to hear you loved it! Hopefully, I can get to it soon.
Lots of great sounding books. I'm still waiting on the Books of Babel to come in. I'm thinking this next go around of book getting will have some post-modern philosophers like Derrida and Rorty. I've been holding off with post-modern thought because by what I've gathered it's something I won't much agree with. Maybe buy something by Frege, Russell, and Wittgenstein. Usually I try to spend no more than 100$ per book buying episode, lol. And because what I'm looking for can be a bit specific, I have to order online (I haven't been to a bookstore, gosh, in at least a year). I saw on your Goodreads that you want to read Gormenghast. Yessss! You will really like it. It's my favorite fantasy book, the writing is the sort you don't read but once in your life, at least for me. 😁 Enjoyed the video very much!
I'm still very excited to see what you make of The Books of Babel series! I do quite a bit of my book shopping online at secondhand sites. A lot of the time stores don't have the titles I'm looking for especially if they're older ones. I heard Titus Groan described as "gothic fantasy" and that's all it took to get me to purchase a copy! It sounds right up my alley! Thank you so much for watching!
I read Mark Lawrence's book Red Sister a few years ago. I enjoyed it but I haven't read anymore by him.
I've passed by Red Sister on the shelves numerous times over the years. I think I should try it knowing that I enjoy Lawrence's storytelling. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it. It just might be my next Lawrence, at least until the last book in the Library Trilogy comes out.
Fantastic to hear your thoughts on The Library Trilogy here, Marianne! Excellent job of describing the themes, and you nailed it in terms of the characters and their conflicts. I too am sitting and waiting for book three!
Much appreciated Philip! Thank you for checking out the video. I'm glad you liked it. I saw Mark Lawrence's comment on your video and thankfully will be getting our answers by next year!
