Welcome to my channel!I stared this channel to motivate myself to get out and explore this beautiful world we live in. My goal is to experience and explore all the Missouri hiking trails I can find and share them with you. This past October I completed a thru-hike of Missouri's Ozark Trail and am sharing weekly videos and daily shorts from the hike.

Ozark Trail Thru Hike | Day 9 | Karkaghne Section to Sutton Bluff
Day 9 of my Ozark Trail Thru Hike and I'm hiking 13.4 mile from Grasshopper Hollow to just past Sutton Bluff Recreation Area. The highlights of this section of the Ozark Trail are definitely the Bee Fork creek crossing and Sutton Bluff Campgrounds.

The Ozark Trail contains over 430 miles of trail divided into 14 mostly connected sections throughout southeast Missouri. The established thru-hike covers eight of the connected sections and runs from Onondaga Cave State Park in Leasburg, roughly 84 miles southwest of St. Louis, to the Eleven Point Terminus near Thomasville, 23 miles north of the Arkansas border. Throw in the off-shoot Taum Sauk Section and you have nearly 300 miles of thru-hikeable trail.

Ozark Trail Thru Hike | Day 8 | Starting the Karkaghne Section
Переглядів 35021 годину тому
My first real water scare on my Ozark Trail Thru Hike. It’s still Day 8 and set out on the Karkaghne Section from Hwy 72 to Grasshopper Hollow. Water was scarce along the way and it wasn’t where it was supposed to be at Grasshopper Hollow. I had to walk deep into the fen to find it. ► My Backpacking Gear List - www.michaelshepherdjordan.com/backpacking-gear ► Backpacking Essentials AllTrails - ...
Ozark Trail Thru Hike | Day 8 | Finishing the Blair Creek Section
Переглядів 478День тому
It’s the morning of Day 8 of my Ozark Trail Thru Hike. I have 11 miles left of the Blair Creek Section before reaching Highway 72 Trailhead, where I originally planned to camp for the night. I’ll get there, I’m guessing, around 2 PM. Silly to stop hiking so soon. So I continue into the Karkaghne Section. ► My Backpacking Gear List - www.michaelshepherdjordan.com/backpacking-gear ► Backpacking E...

Really enjoy your videos mike!
Once you complete editing the videos from the hike have you considered consolidating them into one long documentary/movie? I'd watch that more than once!
That thought has certainly crossed my mind. I’ll definitely have the footage for it haha. Editing is a big process though not gonna lie 😳
Do you find that a pair of trail shoes are more comfortable / adequate for a thru hike like this than say a pair of water resistant boots?
Yes! I switched from boots to trail runners years ago and haven’t looked back. Most trail runners are just as water resistant these days imo.
Pup is like there is no need to go to the Ranger Station. I found my comfy spot right here see she is Happy. Im Happy where is the Problem 😜
Haha! Very true. But there’s more to the story. Full video is on my channel!
Thank you sooo much for rescuing this sweet puppy and giving us her wonderful adoption story. I could see the Pyrenees in her immediately as I hv two Great Pyrenees mix rescues who showed up on my property (at different times)…I kept them both & hv never regretted it a second. They are the sweetest babies. Big babies 😂😂 but nonetheless!
The sweetest! That’s wonderful you adopted two. So big haha. We were honored to play a role in Sakari’s story
Hope he gets a good bill of health from the vet! He’s so adorable!! 🥰
Just the sweetest! Here’s the full story Ozark Trail Thru Hike: Trail Puppy Update ua-cam.com/video/FwlpVUf5nEI/v-deo.html
Is she a duck toller? They're awesome. Great intelligence, sweet, what a score!
The vet said she was an Aussie Great Pyrenees mix.
@@MichaelShepherdJordan Wow!
Blessings to you for taking the puppy! Look how sweet he is! Some people will just leave him all alone 😢
Just the sweetest. We had to help out. Here’s the full story Ozark Trail Thru Hike: Trail Puppy Update ua-cam.com/video/FwlpVUf5nEI/v-deo.html
What's your typical pack weight?
For this thru hike it was about 35lbs, depending on how much water and food I had on me. Here’s all the pack details: Ozark Trail Thru-Hike: Packing, Planning, and Resupply ua-cam.com/video/5QsgZI-2bMs/v-deo.html
Have you camped at Sutton Bluff Campground? What did you think?
Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Bless you both!
Thank you!
Glad the puppers got a good home. And you guys made it happen. Love the videos dude, keep em coming.
Thank you! Really appreciate you watching
That pup gave you the side eye like "What do you mean "might have a dog? You're mine now!" Good luck ya'll. Good save.
😂😂 so true. Full story is now up!
Good looking man!
the sweetest!
Do you think he’s an Aussie? Hope you get to keep the little feller.
At this point I was guessing a spaniel mix. But we’d soon learn more
Dog update?
Dog update is coming! There’s more to the story
Thank you, so much❤
Owls Bend bluff view is THE money shot
one of the best views on the entire Ozark Trail
Instead of treating the Nalgene water with drops, why not just squeeze your filter pouch directly into the Nalgene?
Short answer is, it takes forever haha. Much easier to put the drops in an let it sit for 30min.
@ makes sense! I have a gravity filter but am considering upgrading to a sawyer squeeze. I’ve never tried to squeeze from the pouch like that.
True Love
sweaty stinky love haha
Loving this series! Agree that Rocky falls to klepzig mill is a great day hike. One of my favorite hikes to this day! Also did a fall hike with ONSR from klepzig mill to owls bend.
Thank you! It’s a great stretch. I also really loved Owls Bend at Powder Mill. Pretty great place to camp
Beautiful! Exellent advice, know before you go!
Glad it was helpful!
I have hiked that section a few times. Theres water at MM17 but nothing afterwards at least in my hikes. Both listed spots have always been dry. Glad you found water at grasshopper hollow as I did not when I was through there.
Great to know for the next time and other people. Thank you! And yes, I’m glad I found water too. Just a bit deeper in the Feb than expected
Cool video 😊 new sub here
Thanks for watching! Glad you joined the crew.
FYI, while people do and there is a fire ring there, you are not supposed to camp on the glades as to protect the fragile ecosystem. It is a great overnight spot and there is a decent campsite up the old fire road off into the woods.
Good to know! Appreciate you keeping me informed
You definitely had to have missed the re-route somehow. It should decently marked. I haven't been there for a couple years but when I was it was flagged and signed. The southern sections could definitely use some love but generally dont because the north sees more users overall.
I probably did. But I made it through! And I agreed the northern sections likely get more use. The simple act of people hiking them probably helps
Did not look like fun.
It was a lot, but that’s part of the journey
Please excuse my ignorance but, would whipping out an axe and clearing some trail be considered maintenance or vandalism ? Fire rings need feeding so, what’s legal fuel on government property ?
I can't speak to the trail clearing question. You'd need to ask a ranger or the Ozark Trail Association. In terms of fire, I would only gather downed branches and always have enough water on me to fully extinguish them.
Hello my new friend!Love your channel. Leaving a sub. Almost to 2k! Take care!
Thank you! Truly appreciate it 🤙
@ Anytime my friend! Full support for another traveler! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
❤️❤️
I just got back from a little trip on the OT. I was going to do a loop on the eleven point..but last minute changed my mind (had emailed someone from the OTA and they daid the low river route would be pretty rough going..)..so i did powder mill to just before that old mill and back, it was pretty nice! Water is always my biggest anxiety while backpacking. I dry camped the first night and i hate having to ration water (especially since I have a 125lb-ish dog with me lol) i think we hiked almost 5 miles the 2nd day before we saw any water..
Powder Mill to Klepzig Mill? That's an awesome section of the OT! One of my favorites. But bummer to hear about the River Route. Glad the OTA was able to give you the heads up. Surprising that the water is still low considering all the snow melt recently.
@MichaelShepherdJordan yea it was a nice section! Tuesday night got down to 24f according to my little govee thermometer.
Chilly! Way to get out there. Next time you add an extra 3 miles and head to Rocky Falls, south of Klepzig. One of my favorite Missouri waterfalls
The drought last year was insane!! Glad you found water!
Me too haha! It did create pretty perfect weather for the thru hike though. Only got rain on in my tent 1 night. And creek crossings were easy!
I'll be honest, water sources being dry is a different kind of anxiety. Has that ever happened to you on a multi-day backpacking trip?
Yes and it was on the OT every time. lol Out of desperation I've had to drink water from very questionable (nasty) sources.
Whoa! I'm sure that was a bit nerve-wracking. For the most part I found that the OT water sources came through for me without having to search too much. And Missouri was in a pretty decent drought in October
You had to bushwhack so far to get to that water, I wonder if it was even the same source as the one listed on the OT map... But I sure am glad you found it!
I feel like it was definitely further into the fen than they probably anticipated. But it was there! And I was grateful for it haha
do you ever do weekend trips to the Mark Twain Wilderness areas?
Sometimes. Not often though. Mostly I’m day-hiking the trails
I'm doing the Courtois section in March. Hope you have posted that section by then. Love following along.
You’re going to love it! Courtois was the last section I hiked so it may not be out by march unfortunately. But maybe 🤷♂️
Can’t wait to see the Karkaghne section! We will be on it in the next month or so. Love seeing your journey.
Awesome! Enjoy it. Karkaghne is coming soon 🤙
Doing a longer hike sort of changes you a bit doesn't it.
It does. It’s a different mind set you get in for sure
Keep truckin! Looking forward to more updates :)
Thanks! Got videos coming ever week!
Loving the series. Always exciting when a MSJ video drops.
Thank you! Glad you like them. Appreciate you following along 🤙
Thanks for explaining the trails, it was confusing when we tried!
I’m glad it helped!
Way to go MJ!
thank you!!
Over the summer I did the Onondaga --> council bluff. Can't wait to see what that looks like from the other side
Nice! Man backpacking in summer must have been tough. I tend to avoid it with the humidity and bugs haha. But I’m sure it was great!
Really enjoying the videos
Thank you! Really appreciate you watching!
I'm trying to piece together trail sections on All Trails, and it doesn't seem to have all the sections. Is there one continuous map I'm not finding? I'm trying to plan my first longer thru hike.
I don’t believe AllTrails has one map for the full thru. It does have each section you can download. You can also create your own custom maps with AllTrails+. I have a lot more info about all this on my website MichaelShepherdJordan.com
I also made this video if you haven’t seen it: Ozark Trail Thru-Hike: Packing, Planning, and Resupply ua-cam.com/video/5QsgZI-2bMs/v-deo.html
How much more work comes from planting your camera, filming yourself, then going back to get it, and then rehiking sections over and over? I'd really love to video our backpacking but I'm kind of intimidated with how much work it would be on trail while I'm trying to enjoy nature. Any pointers? Is it not as exhausting as it looks?
While I don’t know exactly, and it all depends on how much you film, I’d say walking back and forth adds about a mile to each day. I know it sound likes more work, but I think it’s worth it, and it forces you to keep your eyes open. My one piece of advice would be to not watch/judge your shot after you do it. Only review after you’ve reached your destination. 🤙
Is having solar chargers an option?
I did think about solar and research it. My conclusion was because 90 percent of the trail is under the tree canopy it just wouldn’t generate enough power. When it was daylight I was hiking. I never had 6hrs of direct sunlight
Was there any ponds along that trail? Or just the old creeks?
As I remember just olds creeks. If there are ponds I usually film myself walking past them
That trail from Devil's Run to the car was the WORST! I was so thankful to get out of there without turning an ankle! Great job, Michael!
Thank you! And yes, pretty brushy and rocky and overgrown haha
Enjoying your hike. I did it SOBO in 2023, and it was an awesome experience. Just think, most people will never see what you saw. I have to admit the Blair Creek section was my least favorite section, with so many pointless back and forths (PBAF), and I didn't ever think the trail along the creek would end. But we still need to be thankful that we have a great long-distance trail in Missouri. Looking forward to your completion videos.
Thanks for watching! And congrats on your solo of it. I feel you. There are times that it gets monotonous but over all it’s an amazing trail. Something pretty special Missouri has
This has been a fun series to keep up on every week. I'm wondering if you feel like your impression of Missouri's natural landscape has changed over the past few years of hiking and making videos?
I’m glad you like the series! Appreciate you watching. I definitely have been surprised by Missouri every time I head out to hike. Glades in particular come to mind. I think they’re a pretty cool MO feature
10 minutes of peaceful bliss during my busy day; thanks Michael. I was planning to thru hike the trail late this fall and had already adjusted back from November to October thanks to your videos and your reply about the ticks. Now, I may be retiring much earlier and thinking April might be a good time. Thanks again; not only for this series, but for all the content you've offered.
Get out there and crush your thru hike!! You’ll love it. Glad this series is helping. If you’ve got other questions I’ve got a lot more info of each day on the trail on my website as well 🤙
