I think this may be the best transfer of this I've heard to date! Thanks for posting.
Super FANTASTIC Record! What a rare treat this is indeed!
In his book "Jazz Masters of the Twenties," Richard Hadlock argued that Jabbo Smith's playing anticipated Roy Eldridge and Dizzy Gillespie, particularly in his fast runs of high notes. You can certainly hear some of that here. And yes, Jabbo is doing the vocal here as well as playing spectacular trumpet.
Quite a good cover, reasonably well recorded (except for the brass ensembles distorting). Nowhere near the quality of Duke's sublime original on Victor (with its uncanny anticipation of the "Glenn Miller" reed sound six years before Miller used it!), but still a lovely version.
Actually Duke Ellington! Tremendous transfer work, as always.
Excellent
This is the alternate. The master (a different take, compare the Bigard solos at 1:23) was issued as Cameo 8182 ua-cam.com/video/vHydYls_EmA/v-deo.html
Actually Duke Ellington
@@tsuwaque :O
Originally released on {American} Pathé Actuelle 36781 and Perfect 14962.
@@fromthesidelines I wouldn't call it a reissue. Looks like this was an original UK issue. Apparently also on Salabert, which might provide for superior sound quality if one were to turn up clean. Quite different from the Cameo version made during what may have been the same session.
Not a reissue; it was actually the *original* U.S. release.
@@fromthesidelinesI could be wrong but I think the US issue was the black label Pathe 36781 issue along with the Perfect and the UK issue was this white label Actuelle issue--note the UK-specific label text
The harmonization at about 2:10 sounds especially nice here: a brief soulful chord coming through clearly. And the banjo parts following that point for the last chorus really stomp! It is amazing to live in a time when you can hear so many different high-quality "lenses" into the music.
I hope you someday get to do all the Creole Jazz Band's sides . This is the best Buddy Habits sounded (I do not have the newest set on Archeophone so I cannot comment but this is miles better than Davies or the 2006 reissue. Incredible my friend - you are taking this very seriously
@@yvesfrancoisritmo Thanks! I love the presentation of the Archeophone set. The version of this on there is similar to the Off the Record EQ and with the horns emphasized and not a whole lot of audible bass sax (it's there but harder to hear), which I tend to think brings out some of the tinniness of the acoustical recording process. It's a lot cleaner than the prior reissues and most would say generally top-notch. There's no avoiding some tinniness--most of the distortion if buried in the middle frequencies and impossible to distinguish in spectral editing software, but I'm really happy with how this sounds.
Gennett in it's small way recorded regional bands that would never have seen the light of day otherwise. This is the most superior version of this song recorded. Better than the Warings Victor or Brunswick or Columbia etc. Yet, how many copies survive, maybe 10 or less. A superior modernistic arrangement played by excellent musicians that I have only heard after 63 years because of this youtuber who thankfully posted it. More, please!
That GREAT French shellac! Makes all the difference! Fabulous Red & Miff!
You can really hear what Berton is doing on drums (without it overwhelming any other parts), like the little cymbal sizzles behind Russell's clarinet.
Didn't know electric Pathes could sound this good. And wow, they must've taken extra care in recording the drums.
Every record deserves to sound great, the problem is knowledge. I know I'm guilty of this. Don't really know where to look for prof equipment and techniques.
99% clarity!
Almost a Harmony ! Love this tune ------Thanks-Never heard this version before !
3 brass, 3 reeds, however I hear no drummer (and none is listed). An excellent band despite the low quality of recording. Robert A. Tamms (1893-1951) was both an orchestra leader and music teacher in Milwaukee. He organized a jazz band in the Navy during WW1. The Bob Tamms orchestra was the first to play on Milwaukee radio. In 1936 he founded the Milwaukee Academy of Music and Allied Arts.
I always thought Isham Jones wrote this - he certainly could have. But no, it was Wolfe Gilbert who did. Bernie Cummins had another good discing of it, and half-sang the lyric (credited to Abel Baer and Ruth Etting). PW’s version belongs to Challis’ warmly voiced ensembles, and to Strickfaden’s bari sax - surely keyed to a possible Crosby vocal? - and Trumbauer’s C melody.
Joe Loyacano on alto is beautiful. Arodin is superb on clarinet. The performance is made, inter alia by the interesting and harmonically unusual tune. Great stuff to play, and the playing is great!
Weren't there people who though Trsch was on some of these sides. The clarinet is quite good, indeed its a great tecording whose only sin is that the engineer at the recording studio recorded it too loudly. You are really doing a good job on these hard to correct sides
I knew Jabbo, swell gentleman. He still played good trumpet the times I saw him - just not like this! Extremely good sound
¡Suscrito!...👍👌
The flipside is "Off To Buffalo," yes? That's one of my faves. Might you give that one your expertise? EDIT: oh geez, sorry, you did! Sounds great.
Beautiful acoustics on this one! And a gorgeous arrangement as well.
Is there any possibility to issue a small batch of vinyl reissues from this, PLEASE!!!!
@@diegocastc I have and already made them available on Facebook a month or two ago, PM for details
@@exponent_of_sock5972 What is your Facebook name or e-Mail address? Just saw your response today.
What do you mean, Albert, that the record seems to end at 1:37? It merely pauses for breath, and on a dominant chord no less. This one WOULD be my choice for proof that poor Bix was "buried" in the huge Whiteman ensemble, his genius stifled! - except for the many other Whiteman sides from this time where Bix is extensively featured!
Thanks for posting.
Wonderful job!
That is incredible, well done!
wonderful 🎶👍👏
Lovely lead, all the way through!

It's staggering to hear the Wolverines in such clarity. Thank you for your service.
I still haven't found a way to make Heartaches sound better. Do you know what EQ it used?
older than my mother in law! (she's 93); Tho nothing beats Chic Webb, this is also great
Hi-- This is a great side! Thanks for posting it. I am confused, however: the post shows "Howard Thomas and His Orchestra." The label itself shows "Al Morris." Am I missing something? Was "Al Morris" a pseudonym to avoid contractual problems? Or...? Anyway, I really enjoyed the tune, and the band. Thanks again.
Pseudonym. Gennett subsidiary labels used them for a good portion of issues.
@@exponent_of_sock5972 Thanks for the info! Again, it's a great side.
Nice tune; I'm totally unfamiliar with the orchestra!
wonderful record
That's the spirit! Thanks! ;D
As you might expect this is a stock arrangement (by whom, we don't yet know). Much enlivened by Epperson's singing and the horn men, plus infectious piano and drum fills. Jimmie Grier's 17pc band recorded the same chart - with extra starch! - for Transco ETs. ua-cam.com/video/Lbd1m-jC_E0/v-deo.html

Turns out that's the lineup _Storyville_ gives for late 1930. Vocalist-frettist Epperson and pianist Lyons are the only players still with Thomas in early '32.
