actually e4, e6, e8 for me suffer from an optical illusion that they work, but they don't. Bd6. There is no mate on h1, as there is Ka2; and the bishop can interpose at h3. D4 works as the only move bc it is an interference mover, preventing the WB from going to d6.

In most of those, the bishop can position themselves to land on A3, either capturing a rook or blocking mate and delaying by a turn. Rook to E5 is the only one that obstructs that path altogether.

Nice video. But doesn't Re8 accomplish the same thing? White could throw their Bishop to b8, blocking the checkmate, but then you can do Ra3++. And any another move just leads to Ra8++. Or am I missing something? [EDIT: Yeah, I missed Bd6 😊]

If we say mate in two moves, that means that each move by white forces black, but here you're moving the black rook without forcing it to do so. So, for this game, you can't mate in 2! You need three moves (to simplify, I'm going straight to the point): 1 White: King: F7/F8 1 Black: Queen: B7/C6 2 White: Queen C7/C6 (king check) [or Bishop D5/C6 (king check)]. 2 Black: Rook A7/B7 3 White: Queen C7/B7 (checkmate) [or Bishop C6/B7 (checkmate)]

@@ChessFinalzero I agree with you the proof is that in the first movement I have as you move the king, without making a failure. But black must be able to move its pieces to avoid failure, but by moving the tower as you do, when it has another option you limit its possibilities. For the past few days I have been doing your exercises, which are very instructive, with a game of failure in front of me. And until then it is the only time I detect this slight anomaly, which I have pointed out to you. Otherwise it's superb continue.

I spent some time feeling instinctively that the pawn move choices for Black must be at the heart of this, plus the white rook's control of the g-file. Once I noticed the possible QxN mate if Black chose to advance the centre pawn, the whole thing opened up immediately. Kind of reverse-engineered it really. 3 mins (not including a brief phone call on an unrelated matter).
