it's cute. Qa6 is appealing but unfortunately the c pawn can move and then it isn't mate in 2. Qc6 obviously solves that problem

I got this one eventually. If a person had not done other chess puzzles they could be looking at it forever. It would be like trying to guess a combination for them.

This puzzle caused me to coin the phrase "the Morphy short stop."

actually e4, e6, e8 for me suffer from an optical illusion that they work, but they don't. Bd6. There is no mate on h1, as there is Ka2; and the bishop can interpose at h3. D4 works as the only move bc it is an interference mover, preventing the WB from going to d6.

Looks to me that e4, e6, and e8 all work too.

A five-minuter.

U can't win with only a bishop and you are down like 2 pieces. And your king is positioned so badly in the corner. You will lose.

Nice video. But doesn't Re8 accomplish the same thing? White could throw their Bishop to b8, blocking the checkmate, but then you can do Ra3++. And any another move just leads to Ra8++. Or am I missing something? [EDIT: Yeah, I missed Bd6 😊]

Qc1. If black moves the knight, Qc8. If black moves the d pawn, Qxc3. If black moves the h pawn, Qh6 (or Qxh6).

Qc6. If Bxd7, Qxb7. If axb6, Qa4. If bxc6, Rb8. If cxb6, Qxc8. Black has no other legal moves.

Seeing this only took a second, but it is a nice puzzle.

I spent some time feeling instinctively that the pawn move choices for Black must be at the heart of this, plus the white rook's control of the g-file. Once I noticed the possible QxN mate if Black chose to advance the centre pawn, the whole thing opened up immediately. Kind of reverse-engineered it really. 3 mins (not including a brief phone call on an unrelated matter).

I found Rh6 less than 5s Not trying to say i'm a genius or anything I think it's the 2k puzzles i spent solving at lichess (i'm at 2417 rating rn)

n-b4 and nxp, white can only move his knight, to no avail. Did I miss something?

I believe Kc5 also forces white to move his knight for the Bb6# - damn... wrong again, he'd just take my rook... :( I thought this might be the *first* time I ever get one of these puzzles right!...

The only challenging aspect of this puzzle was figuring out that it was BLACK to move and win in two, a fact that you forgot to mention.

Not the spirit of the puzzle, but just pull away the tower in h6. Afterwards, it's unlosable with so much material advantage.

Quite simple. Rook to h4, then rook to h7.

W : Rh6 if B : gxh6 so W : g7 (checkmate) or if B : Bf7, Be6,...Ba2 so Rh7 (checkmate).

1st move, Kf8. (Ka8 can’t move, Qb7 can’t capture Qc7, if Qb7 captures Bd5, then Qc7 to c8 = mate). If Ra7 moves anywhere along the a-file, then Qc8 captures Qb8 = mate.

I think that many puzzles have many unimaginable moves.So I think that i have to sacrifice a piece and i choose rook to sacrifice.Therefore i am true

Wow.. I spent a whole five minutes trying to twisty brain to find it while staring at the thumbnail.. good to know there's a rook and Im not stupid 😅
