Great initiative Rick. I retired at 65 from beginning of 2024. I can only echo the importance of retirement planning and the key here is to retire debt free because you will have to understand what your cost of living will be when you do go on retirement and debt will rob you from retiring comfortably.

I’m retired and l enjoy it, l was in transportation for 24 yrs, and l have another retirement from another career, l go fishing, l got back into learning guitar , l had learned some guitar when growing up, but didn’t stick with it and also l took up bass guitar, so there’s plenty for me to do, I’ve thought about a part time job but haven’t figured out what l would want to do. Yes l will definitely keep up to date on health care etc- l liked what you said about a flexible job and hrs, l really don’t want to be working all day, and yes working from home wouldn’t be bad either- I’m satisfied with my retirement income, I’m not fancy and don’t need all this materialistic stuff. Thanks Good Video

Don, I didn't know you had suffered serious health issues! Take care of yourself and watch what you're doing on that boat if you decide go out! I have a few years on you and that's one of my concerns when I go out alone. As you state, you never know when fate will strike. As for this video, you make excellent points, especially the three legs. A few things I tried to live by and instill in our children: 1. Don't assume the SS leg is going to be there when you are ready to retire; 2. When you look for a job, consider ALL the benefits especially medical and retirement--not just base compensation. Out of pocket premiums for medical insurance can be a huge expense for a young family. If you are lucky enough to find a company that still offers a pension, don't discount it. If they do not have a pension, get enrolled in a 401k and take full advantage (or as much as you can afford) of any matching feature. Any profit sharing, ESOP or similar programs are icing on the cake; 3. Diversify your retirement investments. Never place all your eggs in one basket. Also, if all or a majority of your savings will be in tax-deferred programs, be sure to factor future income taxes as a major expense; 4. Make sure you are adequately insured for medical and liability. As you stated, medical insurance in retirement is a huge expense. Check to see if your union, trade association, or employer has a group insurance program for retirees. Also, if you plan on having a family, purchase life insurance as young as you can as those premiums can also get prohibitive as you get older; 5. Try to get into a home as soon as you can and live a notch or two BELOW your means. This will let you build up your savings faster and give you a cushion to meet the unexpected. You don't have to keep up with with everyone else and in the end you will be better off. Also, when you do purchase a home, consider resale as the biggest factor. You will be moving at some point. If you have to pay a slight premium for a home in a more desirable location, it will more than pay for itself in better appreciation and a quick sale.
