Something that helps me solo like Marcus, and Bill Stewart, to a lesser extent, is just remembering to keep the ride cymbal involved. What kind of cymbal is that? It’s amazing.

Those trio jazz albums that Gilmore plays on are such a goldmine for vocabulary. The guy just looks at the drums differently than everyone else. Literally everything he plays is worthy of being transcribed.

Unbelievable! Very good playing and transcription, not done in a blink. The first time I heard Elvin live I sat a few meters from the club stage. It was like getting tabasco in my ears. What a sound and what a ”wide” and almost abstract phrasing! Over 40 years later I keep coming back to him as the very unique player he was. Coltrane of course and the many Blue Note records but also quite a few of his own recordings, both vinyl and CD. I can mention Dear John C, On the mountain and The truth live at The Blue Note. He also recorded with John McLaughlin (After the rain) in the ’90s. I actually got to meet and talk to Elvin when he played with his Jazz Machine here in Gothenburg, Sweden 1984. My friend knew the bass player and we were in the back room. Very nice meeting and the band boy from Germany came with three big glasses of beer and a bowl with ice cubes. Elvin put the ice in the glasses and drank all three in a row. Minutes later he started the second set with a brush solo.
