Shooting the 1873 Uberti vs Rossi Model 92, both chambered in 357 Mag

Running a fun side by side comparison of the two Winchester clones. The Uberti is the newest in my lever collection. I really like them both. I've got a little more time on the 92 as I've owned it for a few extra years. Both are beauties. Which one do you like better?

Took the Henry Carbine with the 18 inch barrel, and the new Chiappa 1886 with the 26 inch barrel out for some tests at 100 yards. I shot some 300 gr XTP's in both (5 rounds each) and studied the different groups. I also took out the 300 Gallant Polymer Coated Lead bullets. They were impressive. Barrel length does make a difference. It was a very windy day.

More 38 Special Conversion Cylinders Pietta 1851 vs Uberti 1851
Переглядів 1874 місяці тому
A very interesting experiment with these two revolvers. One was a Uberti, the other a Pietta. Both are fine looking revolvers. Ron's Uberti came with the wood grips, and my Pietta came with the creme colored grips. They are both stock except for the 38 Special conversion cylinders from Howell. Both surprised me, especially the performance. It was a very revealing video.

I had loaded some cowboy loads for an 1851 conversion cylinder in 38 Special. My press was set up for all my other 38 Specials. The cartridge was just a nose hair too long for the conversion cylinder, but they fit just right in the Open Top. Literally we were out "Banging a Gong". Fun Times. By the way, it was very cold day. The only heat source was the refection of the full sun on the snow.

Shooting the Conversion Cylinder on a 36 caliber Pietta 1851

I was skeptical at first, as I thought it was rather cumbersome to use these on these Colt reproductions. Hammering out the wedge every time, and loading the cylinder, then replacing it to fire again seemed time consuming. That was until I first shot this combo. What a fun time. I got hooked right away. I will admit, it's easier on a Remington reproduction, but it's just as fun.

OK to start. I've am in the middle of a thought experiment on my two Remington new model Navy's. A peitta and a uberti. I slugged both barrels, for very different results. The peitta slugs at .3665, and the uberti at .3710. So I've custom order a bullet mold for heal based bullets. Heal at .358, and drive bands at .372. Two bullets one at 130gr, the other 150gr. I'm also curious what the Howells cylinder you have measures front to back without the firing pin cap. On my Remingtons they measure 1.62 which if longer than 357 mag cartridge overall length. The bore of you 1851 Navy is .36 cal with a groove diameter closer to .37. Using ,357 bullets they will not engage the rifling resulting in tumbling/keyholing and leading. Your 1872 open top is a true .357 groove/.38 special bore/chamber and should shoot .38 special fine. To improve accuracy with the 1851 Navy/Howell conversion cylinder load your cartridges with 148gr hollow base target wad cutters (such as from Hornady) They will expand and engage the rifling grooves and should be more accurate. In the day .38 Colt cartridges used healed externally lubricated bullets (like current.22 LR) So the exposed bullet was .36 and worked well, later they went to modern .358 inside lubricated hollow base bullets which also worked. Enjoy DJ

My pleasure I've enjoyed a number of your videos Especially enjoy Cowboy and Black Powder guns. If you don't already have one, Taylor's & Co. sells a small spanner wrench to remove the Howell firing pins for thorough cleaning. Also, the C&B BP pistol frames, wedges etc , unlike the Howell cylinders, Colt Open Tops and other factory conversion, are marked BP only and not proofed for smokeless powder, so loads must be kept pretty light.. Personally in my Howell conversion I load the cartridges with 3F BP (about 18gr for .38 and .45 Colt) and dip the loaded tips in Beeswax & EVOO mixture. Very Fun! ❤ DJ@@ralphperez4862

Ralph: Not uncommon to have to tweak the fitting of a conversion cylinder. First thing I would check is if the cylinder times correctly with the barrel off and pointing the frame/cylinder assembly up and apply minimal pressure to hold the cylinder against recoil shield then see how it cycles, turns freely on the arbor, and indexes and locks to the bolt/cylinder stop. Sometimes the hand made be slightly too long or short. for correct timing. (and can be filed down a little or stretched). Maybe, as you as suggested, the cylinder stop is a little too wide or has sharp edges to seat fully in cylinder notches and can be narrowed or tapered a little. If all is well there, then need to see if the cylinder is a little too long and may need to adjust the barrel/wedge fit so as not to be binding against the forcing cone. Always better to work on the smaller cheaper parts and have spares on hand ( hand, cylinder stop, springs, barrel wedge etc.) and not the expensive ones (frame, cylinder, hammer, barrel). Also just a suggestion: the usual 38spl bullets are too small ( .357"-.358 ") to properly engage the rifling grooves of a cap and ball barrel (about .360"+) and will be fairly inaccurate and likely keyhole. Best function is with hollow base bullets that can expand like a minne ball. Most commonly available are .38 spl 148 gr hollow base full wad cutter target (light) loads (or Hornady bullets if you reload). Smokeless loads need to be kept light as the cap and ball black powder fames and steel are proofed for black powder pressures only and should not be given stiff smokeless loads. The conversion cylinders on the other hand are proofed for lead bullet loads <850 fps. ( but unfortunately not the rest or the gun.) Certainly never +P. Personally I reload my .38spl conversions with BP. All the smoke, smell, and booming fun of BP and none of the fuss with powder, balls, and scarce caps and jams. Hope you can get both of your Navies running with the Howell cylinder. 🙂 DJ

You welcome I just thought you might be able to tweak your other Navy so it would also work with the Howell cylinder. Yep , reloading is half the fun and can be done on days when you can't get out to shoot. Keep the posts coming. ❤ DJ @@ralphperez4862

How do you use guitar picks in the maintenance of an old style revolver? Just askin' for a friend.🤣

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh ha ha ha ha. Only guitar players notice the picks. I didn't even notice them until I watched it again. Ha.

How does the safety keep from hitting the scope? What caliber is this one? I have one identical to this, only with the original sites. I do not know what the caliber is though. Good looking rifle.

If it looks like this, it's a 7.65 x 53 Mauser. They are wonderful and clean rifles. They are not made to handle modern pressures. They perform very well and are nice firearms. I carry it, if I carry it with nothing in the chamber because the safety is in operable.

This revolver was manufactured in a neighboring city, São Leopoldo in southern Brazil, my father has had one since the 90s, in excellent condition
