Tunnel Creek July 2024
Tunnel Creek is a fascinating natural attraction in Western Australia, located in the Kimberley region. It is a part of the Tunnel Creek National Park, and its main feature is a 750-meter long tunnel that cuts through the Napier Range, a remnant of an ancient reef system that dates back hundreds of millions of years.
Here are some key details about Tunnel Creek:
History and Cultural Significance
Indigenous Connection: The area holds deep cultural significance for the Bunuba people, the traditional owners of the land. Tunnel Creek is also associated with the Bunuba warrior and freedom fighter Jandamarra, who used the tunnel as a hideout during the late 1800s. Jandamarra led a resistance against European settlers, fighting for the rights of his people.
Geological Features
The Tunnel:
The tunnel is believed to be over 350 million years old. Visitors can walk through it, wading through water in some places. The tunnel’s ceiling can reach heights of 12 meters (39 feet), and it's dotted with stalactites, stalagmites, and limestone formations.
Cave and Bats: The tunnel is a limestone cave, and it's home to several species of bats, such as ghost bats and fruit bats. You can see their roosting spots inside.
The Experience
Water Crossings: Depending on the season, visitors may need to walk through waist-deep water to traverse the tunnel I had to swim a short distance because it was very deep .
Sturdy shoes and a good torch are essential, as parts of the tunnel are completely dark.
Wildlife: Alongside bats, Tunnel Creek is home to freshwater crocodiles, though they are generally harmless to humans. Be cautious but don’t be surprised if you spot them near the water.
Access
Location: Tunnel Creek is approximately 180 kilometres (112 miles) from Derby and 35 kilometres (22 miles) from Windjana Gorge National Park.
Road Conditions: The road to Tunnel Creek is unsealed and can be rough, especially after rain. It’s recommended to travel by a 4WD vehicle.

I filled up Alice 270 litre tank then I put 30 litres in At Tllmouth Wells Made it to Halls Creek about 1/4 tank left so I’m not 100% accurate on how much I used but I’d guess 190 - 200 litres

I also had my caravan re rated to 4t and this, combined with the Lovells stage 2 got me legal. Anyhow….thanks for the great video which was most informative and enjoyable. Belated post ….Just back in the West after 4 months traversing the GCR, up to the Cape, touring Qld north of the 26th, and back home down the Birdsville towing our upgraded 4000 ATM 2008 Supreme Territory. Saw a lot of Zone’s so your post was of interest. Coincidentally our pre-departure check weighing would have been about the same time as yours. Feel for you, as we had previously confronted similar issues … back when we discovered that despite our best efforts our much loved near new BT-50 for all its virtues was not going to be up to legally coping with the van, even at its then lesser original ATM when all the essentials and a few creature comforts were loaded. So with what do we now tow it? Having been bitten once by misguiding sales prattle, we paid much closer attention to the maths in achieving a legal outcome. Whilst also a real estate agent, happily I hold a truck license from farming days past which proved to be pivotally important. We now travel and tow now with a F-250 6.7L Super Duty, which is licensed from new as a light truck opening the way to have it licensed at its full load capabilities, thus not restricted to under 4.5T for non truck drivers. However, even with that advantage if you load 400kg (10% of the vans ATM) on to the 250’s tow ball, our weighing showed that with draw system, tools, full engel, canopy, roof rack, second ute spare etc etc we are still close to the rear axle limit. Yes its an expensive step up, but I sleep better! As further consolation, its no go-kart for ride comfort, has unbelievable amounts of power, and most V8 LC folks are scratching their heads when we compare fuel economy. Once you know how the numbers really stack, you cant help but wonder how many caravaners you see are rolling without certainty of third party public liability cover and vehicle/van insurance if the unforeseen happens.
