i think jax never wanted to cause more shinanigans than he did. he never caused anything the others would not forget after a few hours but when he accedentaly breaks gangles mask, i feel like he started to feel guilt beyond some line and was starting to ask himself things. in most shinanigans after this, he seemed not very trigger happy, sometimes almost sounded like acting for the sake of not showing weakness out of ego and when he gets pulled into that tv room, that guilt likely was amplified because of all the things he likely asked himself inbetween. and now glued to a tv, he knows what he is watching mostly is irrelevant but it gives alot of time, alone in his head while being lectured to smile. i guess from there he just gave up thinking after he noticed he hurt gangle again whit "i liked you ,more when you where sad" proofen by him just sounding exhausted in the car when he usaly would just not care and move on. after the tv room it seems like he just had fun whit the meaness he usaly has while not knowing what to think because he dont wants the others to know this is happening in his head and next episode we will see the fruits of all this.

in all honesty rather than an attitude change I think its more that > his way of coping is bullying everyone AND being chaotic at same time > this entire adventure is mundane, regular and most importantly threatens punishment for chaotic behavior. SO > he cant engage in his coping behavior cause him to break down this adventure stops him from coping and so he gets depressed

Love this analysis. While everyone was hoping to see the worst happen to him due to his past actions, we're starting to see that deep down, he's really no different from all of us. We wake up, go to school/work, do our chores, bask in the reality we live in, with not much to look forward to, and the one saving grace of it all is we convince ourselves we're "free" until we hear that word "if you don't do it, you'll be punished!" Normally when a character reacts to a punishment, you see them get scared because they suddenly realize that they might be trapped in an even worse state, but Jax already is in this virtual utopia where he can do whatever he wants (and does so to keep his sanity and remind himself that this is all just a game) but now that there's consquences, reality is slipping in to even this world, a sense of authority and restriction, he slips into what's likely his demeanor in the real world. Someone who doesn't bother looking forward to the future because he's a nihlist. Anything he does right will just be walking a fine tightrope and anything he does wrong will make the walls even tighter until he can't move. I think that's revealing the metaphor of his character. Even in the little clip where he thinks he died and still has to deal wtih the cast, he sounds morbid until everyone is turned to stone and he tries to confess something only to be stuck in a "gotcha!" smile against his will. I don't think Jax is trying to be a bad guy. I think he's trying to remind everyone that long as this is a fantasy world, they should stop holding back and try to reach into thier deeper self, have thier fun, go wild, and constant reminders that that's wrong and he has rules to follow make him angry because he's trying to ask "Why is everyone so sensitive!? It's a fake world. We can't die, we can't escape, so lets just learn to live a little, the minute we finally wake up again, it's back to following the rules or else when we die, we die permanently!" But at least it keeps him entertained long as people believe the pain and world is real, it sounds like he's still ultimately fed up by the fact that there's still nothing to look forward to. Zooble seems to have the same nihilistic view of the world, metaphorically tied to her arbitrary design and lack of self confidence, which people assume is related to her being unsure about her gender, but I think that's just making a fetish out of a serious situation, as from what she said during her therapy session she's not talking about her body, she's talking about who she is inside the parts and who she wants to be. That's why Caine (an AI) making it about himself, and giving her a box of parts and not taking her seriously by trying to find a way to describe who he thinks she is instead of listening to her and letting her speak for herself made her even more angry, but she knows like Jax, there's nothing they can really do except thier best, because it's better than possibly losing what little sense of self they have potentially. She already gave up, Jax is trying not to give up but EP4 was him realizing that he might as well if there's a chance Caine will punish him, making him question "WHat's even the point of playing a game if I'm just gonna get punished here too? It's called REALITY...."
