    Good show on the gates, Steve! They look fantastic. It's very common for the gates to lower and raise at slightly different times from each other. There is a major road crossing near where I live that has 6 gates - four street and two pedestrian - on each side of the street, for a total of 12 gates at the crossing. All 12 seem to open/close at slightly different rate of speed.

    Great video, Steve. I think you've sold me on at least trying this system out. I have a few locos that I'd like to have as DCC eventually, so when I can afford it, I'll give one a go, probably my GP15-1.

  • @csxrensville5105
    @csxrensville5105 6 днів тому

    I like the sound of this system. Programming a loco looks a breeze. I'm tempted to get one of these. The only thing I find with using a Pad/Mobile is there is no "feel" when controlling the loco. I have to keep looking at the mobile when operating. I find this awkward, especially when switching. I would use the Tablet to programme the loco, then use my Wifi throttle as normal. I am very impressed with it though.

    • @thebritishrailroader
      @thebritishrailroader 6 днів тому

      Hi there. I do agree with you, there is less feel for it with the tablet/phone interface. However, as you noted, the programming is a breeze and far less fiddly than with a controller. It is a bit like JMRI in that respect. I like that it is fully DCC compatible and you can use it with other power sources such as a battery. This may be the way forward. I hear that Hornby's offering is similar but nowhere near as versatile.

    Nothing is ever straightforward. 😀 The amount of hassle I had trying to fit a PNP Tsunami decoder into a GP40 got me to thinking I should take up Stamp collecting. These decoders seem to fit the bill in terms of wireless remote, without the expense of buying a WiFi control system.

    • @thebritishrailroader
      @thebritishrailroader 6 днів тому

      To be fair, I was trying to get a quart in to a pint pot, but ultimately managed it and it has worked out really well. I think as technology moves on and both motors and decoders get smaller, this will become easier. Can you imagine trying to get some of the early decoders into these things!

Ran the wheels off those trains as my father was building a larger HO scale layout from a Model Railroader plan right next to mine. The Lionel set was replaced by HO scale racing cars and by now most of it has been sold off. But I do have my two favorite boxcars from my Dad's original 1962 Athearn HO scale set on my current in-progress switching layout. Thanks for igniting the memories.

It gave me a passion for the hobby early on, and I started buying my own locos and stuff in my teens, after we moved to the US (1963-1973). Had a Tyco (red box) NYC GP20. Tyco made good detailed models then, before they got bought out by some toy company. The GP20 still runs, and can pull an awesome number of freight cars. a bit noisy, but I think it always was. Interesting video, and thanks for the shoutout. To me there is no greater compliment to a prototype model railroader than to see a scene and say “I know where that is.”

    Great video, Steve. Prototype modelling may be the easiest to explain, but in my opinion, it is the HARDEST to model. I model closer to prototype because my railroads, my operations and my locations all follow the prototype. But I found it much easier to not try and match every structure (key street overpass and a few key structures notwithstanding). But I'd consider myself a proto freelancer based on this. I think there is a lot of gray area in between. It will be a debate here in the states for years to come.

      @joelupinacci011073 thanks mate. It is never cut and dried and you could argue that even prototype modellers are in fact proto freelancers where they have to make compromises etc. A really interesting topic to discuss. Thanks again for your thoughts 👍
