Backyard Sauna Retreat
Need a moment of zen? 🧖‍♀️ Join me for a sauna in my parents’ incredible backyard oasis. Two koi ponds and a gentle spring rain really put the cherry on top of this relaxing experience.
This may not be gardening related, but I thought you may enjoy a bit of tranquility and maybe even some backyard inspiration. ;) This entire area was an old wooden deck and a dirt hill. My parents built this all with their bare hands and loads of creativity. Enjoy!

Growing Tomatillos From Seed - The Easy Way!

    I have started Tomatillo seeds twice this year from seed and they have germinated and done very well on the heat mat and in front of a sunny winds in my garage. Twice now when the sprouts are about 3-4 inches tall, I move them to the garden and plant. The next day they are dead! So, I direct sowed them from seed out in the garden a week ago. I see nothing coming ip in the rows. What am I doing wrong?

    • @FrecklesSprouts
      @FrecklesSprouts 3 місяці тому

      Sounds like they need to be acclimated to the outdoors for several days to a week to help them deal with the transplanting process. Look up videos on how to “harden off seedlings”. Also avoid planting in the heat of the day and make sure they get well watered at the time or planting. Also could be a pest of some sort getting them but I suspect they are just shocked by the sudden environmental change.

    I an get the green and the purple to germinate but the pineapple tomatilla seems to be more diffiult. It often won't germinate at all and if it does the seedlings die soon after the first true leaves form. I don't know if my seed packet is a bad batch or if they need some sort of special care.

    • @FrecklesSprouts
      @FrecklesSprouts 3 місяці тому

      Hmm that’s strange. I don’t think it would be the seed since they are germinating. I haven’t experienced that. I would pay attention to how much water they are getting. You want them to have consistent moisture when they are seedlings without being soaking wet. And they don’t tolerate cold and need plenty of sun.

    • @FrecklesSprouts
      @FrecklesSprouts 2 роки тому

      Wow so snarky and for what reason? Lol Wouldn’t you still be waisting food if you did that? Also, if you grow tomatillos you know they are prolific and I’m sure you can spare ONE fruit to generate dozens more plants. There’s also lots of ways you can grow tomatillos. I was simply offering an out of the box suggestion.

    • @FrecklesSprouts
      @FrecklesSprouts 2 роки тому

      Thank you! Glad you enjoyed. It’s a fantastic way to start seeds and I’m seeing a lot more people starting to do it. If you have a consistently cold winter you could start anytime from your first frost until a month before your seeds might start sprouting. Here in Northern California we get warm weather mid winter that can make things germinate earlier than desired so I wait sometimes until March to sow things like tomatoes and basil and marigolds. It’s really great for any flowers that need cold stratification as well. Nature does it for you!

    This will be my first t8me growing tomatillos and the variety I’m planting is called Tomatillo Queen of Malinalco, they’re supposed to be a sweeter variety. And I’m growing them from seeds that I brought. I’m in zone 6b in CT. Any advise on indoor starting and transplanting out doors?

    • @FrecklesSprouts
      @FrecklesSprouts 2 роки тому

      Sorry for the late reply! Ohh I’ve grown that variety and it’s a weed in my garden now. Definitely sweeter and such a beautiful plant! I would grow them like a tomato. They like heat and get really big. Have you started them yet? Have you grown peppers from seed indoors? I would treat them similarly although I think they are easier than peppers. Happy growing! If you have more questions don’t hesitate to reach out.

    • @FrecklesSprouts
      @FrecklesSprouts 3 роки тому

      How exciting! One nice thing is that you can rotate the bags to the ones that are closest to being ready and when you harvest that one you move it to another one. Or perhaps you can use some bird netting if they are clustered in a large area. For me, the slugs and rolly pollies are worse than birds and squirrels can be an issue too. Everything and everyone wants to eat the strawberries! Haha

      With as many chemical fertilizers and pesticides that are being used, it certainly is such a thing. Organic Soil = soil derived from organic materials found in nature without any synthetic/chemical fertilizers etc. Think Miracle Gro vs. FoxFarm Ocean Forest which contains manure, composted kelp, etc.
