Skiing the Mallory Route, Aiguille du Midi North Face, Chamonix
The super classic line on the Midi North face that is on every steep skiiers wish list. Ive wanted to ski this line since my first winter season in Chamonix 10 years ago but things had never lined up with be there at the right time and the right conditions (not helped by moving to New Zealand!). So was beyond stoked to find the line in condition in May 2024. The seemingly constant spring storms left snow sticking well to the ice, but meant finding a window of good weather longer than a few hours was tricky....we were able to ski all of the most complex and exposed sections before dissapearing into cloud which we could see was hanging about just above the level of the mid station. There were still a few sharks and patches of ice around so a cautious, slow approach was the order of the day, especially on the crux sections which are wildly steep and exposed. A short 20m rap to get onto the diagonal and the 2x 35m raps at the bottom. Being able to step straight off a lift onto such a big complex line is absolutely wild and what makes Chamonix such a special place....and the experience of skiing under the constant watch of the cable car full sightseers just above your head is pretty surreal compared to the NZ equivalent where your generally a solid days hard approach from civilization!

Skiing the Eugster Couloir, Aiguille du Midi North Face

Another incredible line accessibile directley from the Aiguille du Midi. Starts as for the Mallory, cutting across the main face onto the ridge lookers right until the demi lune, then cuts left into a couloir that winds all the way down to just above the mid station. Dropping in from the summit ridge onto the main face is pretty intense - patches of bare ice were visible on this steep and hugel...

A toponeige 5.3 easily accessable from the Aiguille du Midi for a morning hit. We skinned up the Tacul shoulder, partly to put the track in for Sentinel Rouge the following day. This puts you right on top of the line. We had scoped the line on the way in and could see the May snow was plastered to the face and covering most of the ice. Fun skiing over hefty exposure, followed by a rap through a...

A fun morning from the Aiguille du Midi. From the Vallee Blanche skin up accross the Geant glacier and up the gully on the South Face of Aiguille Noire to gain the summit. We found amazing snow on the 40 degree upper slopes above the large hanging glacier. From the ridge instead of turning left down the north face, a narrow passage leads down to a 50m rappell into the north couloir. This is sig...

Col du Plan, a classic ski line in Chamonix on the North Face of the Aiguille du Midi, via the Tournier spur entrance, skiied with Will Rountree and Ross Hewitt. Yeah is a fun day out! Around 40 at the top , the a bit steeper around 45 in the choke and then mellows out. A little tricky to get the timing right for the whole line , you don't want to leave it too late as the bottom section out across the crow sees some big wet loose action so we were forced into skiing the top bit a little earlier than would have liked.

Yeah only a couple of previous descents - takes you down the Brenva Face towards Italy but we traversed back across to rhe mer de Glace once we had descended the line to end up back in chamonix. thanks!! it gets a 5.3 so technically a grade easier than those north face midi lines but is for sure still very full on. while the exposure isnt quite as in your face as on the Midi north face, the whole top part is really exposed over that big serac, and its steep and sustained in the 50deg range at the top, steep enough to keep going if you fall! but more like open face skiing than the picking your way down a meandering couloir style of the Mallory. the key with all of these lines is conditions and it was very good when we were there which makes it a lot more straightforward, would be very scary on hard icy snow

Don't get the risk-reward ratio for this kind of thing. Risk is what appears to be a great deal of no-fall zone with obvious enough consequences. Reward is endless jump turning on crusty snow. Don't get it! I mean, I don't really get extreme couloir skiing given the risks are so high, but at least that involves some skiing at speed reward and not just jump turning down the hill!

That is awesome. I sat next to a friend of yours flying to Napier last week and he told me that you did this. Unbelievable, I did not think anyone could ski the Caroline Face! Legend.
