They say, "Never make a big decision on a bad day." We all hike our own hikes, sorry this didn't go as you had wanted/planned but I am sure a tremendous experience for you nonetheless. Keep it up and keep on hiking!
I typically don't have an appetite while thru hiking for a good 4-7 days. I eat because I know I need the calories but I'm pretty much choking everything down. I have found that drinking calories is better for me at the start of a hike.
Did you see any deer there?
I can only imagine how cold you were up there I just got back from there a couple days ago hot in the daytime freezing around 3 o’clock in the morning, it gets more beautiful when you pass Bowman Lake there’s so much up there to explore there’s another route in if you come in from Truckee side it’s an easier way in there and you can get to the backside of Bowman Lake👍👍👍👍 you were brave to go up there especially on those narrow sections when there’s snow and ice right next to those big drop offs!!!
fun is overrated...personally I don't like fun I like accomplishing goals I set for myself. You'll never see a tombstone engraved with "remembering someone who had lots of fun".
You should research how to properly use your trekking poles. Might improve your hiking and mood.
Hmmm... Kudos to you for posting this, it had to be hard to put it out there when it was less than a 100% completion. Especially since it was 90ish%. I hiked the TRT in '22, and I had some challenges, yeah. It was scorching hot and very dry. Had a 22 mile water carry at one point. Vastly different to your hike. But I guess that's what "hike your own hike" truly means... I personally would've crawled on my hands and knees the last 18 for the feeling of completion. But I hope you got something good out of it in hindsight, as my most memorable trail miles, on any trail, were the miserable ones. And finally... Think you'll hike again? Anything? Or is it not for you?
Thanks for watching and the comment! Na, not hard at all to post. I hiked my hike and I was excited to share the truth. While I didn’t complete the trail, the hike felt complete to me. I mentally and physically could have kept going, I just didn’t _want_ to. I had seen enough, been out long enough, experienced enough. I’m so happy I did the trip and yeah, when I look back, the challenges made for a super memorable experience. I absolutely plan to do more long hikes!
Thanks for the video, ill be heading out there soon 👍
Awesome! I hope you have an incredible hike!
Poor guy.
My home ❤
Dustin, I am left wondering how many other things will you quit on in your life or leave undone? I have hiked and bikes portions of the TRT, all of the JMT. Maybe my background as a long distance and runner taught me a thing or two about enduring and putting in the work for the results. I was thinking the TRT would be a good starter thru hike for triple crown type stuff. I would encourage you to go back and hike those 18 miles...on a sunny day.
This was awesome to watch. Definitely going to help me be realistic as I make my trip at the end of July. Going CW starting from Spooner but hopefully with less rainfall. Unbelievably anxious to get out there and throw myself through the wringer. Amazing to see real emotion and thoughts as you battled sleep and rain rather than a facade of sunshine and happiness! Congrats on your awesome journey.
Thanks so much! This is exactly why I posted these videos and why I left the hard parts in the edit. I definitely recommend taking a poncho just it case. It would have made a huge difference for me. It was a tough journey and I would change a lot knowing what I know now but I wouldn’t undo it for anything. I’m so happy I did it and I’m certain you will be too. I hope everything goes perfect for you! Enjoy!
If I may comment, I love the videos. Personally, I only use straps on poles when skiing. I have found that I tend to break poles when I fall or if they get stuck if I'm strapped in. I never adjust my trekking poles to the ups and downs of the terrain. The grips I have allow you to grip them differently depending on terrain; much easier for me to do when I'm not using straps.
Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed them!
I just binge-watched your series and this had to be the most real TRT series I've seen. I've made 2 attempts and am planning a 3rd. I did those 18 miles and you made the right call - lots of slick rock along cliffs about 2-3 miles past Echo, which would've been brutal in the rain. I loved how you didn't use any music - hearing the footsteps brought back so many memories, and hearing the thoughts you were having were so very familiar. You mentioned getting tired of seeing the Mule's Ears plants - I actually got tired of seeing Lake Tahoe LOL.
Thanks so much for watching and this comment! I’m really glad you enjoyed the videos. I kept them simple and honest because that’s what I like watching. It’s great to hear others do too! That’s good to know about the trail past Echo. I don’t regret not doing them but I do wonder about them. Lol I definitely understand getting tired of seeing the Lake. It’s so ominous, a massive visual of how far you have to go. But I was happy to see it after going a couple of days without seeing it. What was your favorite part of the trail? Are you going CW or CCW this next time? I think I would go CW starting in Tahoe City if I did it again. It makes the most sense logistically. Congrats on your two previous hikes and best of luck on your third!
@@dustanner My favorite was Mt. Rose to Brockway Summit - absolutely beautiful and the steep side mountain on the way to Relay Peak was like being on another planet for me. I did that section CCW but the others I went CW. This time, it's CW starting at KBS. Thanks for the kind words and encouragement!
Stoked I found your videos, been enjoying teaching your journey! As for the “skateboard” that is a tool used to bring resources out there for maintenance projects (it is a skill resort in the winter) I fully agree with the beauty of that area- I completed a 100k race (65miles) last year and it went from Stagecoach lodge out past Big Meadow and back. That is one of my favorite stretches with the single track trail, beautiful views, and relatively mellow grade. Desolation beats it in my opinion, but the rocky stretches of desolation can also get very tiring 😅
Thanks Ultra. Loving your TCT series. Great vibes. Enjoying the honest assessments of the trail and yourself- it’s a refreshing approach to a trail vlog. Peace and happy trails.
Thank you!! I was a little nervous about including all the emotions but I decide that’s what I’d want to see. I’m glad you enjoyed it! Happy trails to you as well!
Embrace the suck
lol i d.be on that lake shuttle in a second bro
Dude, I'm so sorry. That area truly is so beautiful to hike, but I remember that slate scree and it is the literal worst. And in rain?!?! Yeesh.
Believe me when I say this! Get a rei helix! I have a tensor also and there’s no comparison. Screw the extra few ounces. A home run in the sleeping pad industry!!
Great series Dustin! Thanks for including the frustrations as well as the highlights. All backcountry journeys of length have both. I hiked the JMT during a high snow year and I experienced so many highs and lows and nearly quit at one point. It has since become one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I have spent many nights on the trail and that trip is still my benchmark for what I am capable of. Well done. It sounds like this trip may serve as a similar experience for you. I also would like to hear a reflection video of that trip now that time has passed. And what's next...
Thanks so much for watching! I’m glad you appreciated seeing the frustrations. I wanted to be authentic and transparent to help others or just add to the entertainment. It’s what happened, how I felt, real. You’re exactly right. The trip was so hard but I feel so much more confident now. I hated the rain and trail conditions while I was out there but I’m thankful for them now. Do I wish it would have been beautiful weather, for sure, but the challenges made me stronger. Wouldn’t take that trip back for anything! And yes! I will certainly do a follow up video. Thanks for asking!
Hi Dustin … can you do a summary of the whole experience now that it’s been 5 months? A new video? I really enjoyed your series, and think it would be cool to get your view of this hike from a different vantage (I.e., some elapsed time and distance). This kind of type 2 fun ages well. For me, everytime I do something like this (Uinta Highline, Mt Whitney, etc) I swear it off and then a few weeks later I start prepping for the next one. Just curious your take now. Also what gear worked and didn’t (besides your pad)? It was a great effort and would love to get your current take. And will you do something similar again? Thanks.
Thanks so much for watching and leaving such a thoughtful comment! I’m so glad you enjoyed the videos. I was hoping someone would ask for a follow up and gear review - I’ll get on it! Spoiler alert: you’re so right.
Sorry Dustin but you shouldn't have started in the first place. Going the wrong way to begin with should have been an omen... You really should have done your homework. I've hiked the entire TRT five times, in my 70's and never had the bad experiences like you. Try it again, and leave the camera home....
Noted thank you, Carole!
thank you for sharing your journey! those days last summer in the sierra were rough with hurricane hilary. i was in the yosemite that weekend and in the backcountry until the 24th i don’t blame you for being over it. still great job for the miles you put in and thanks for sharing the tough moments ! planning my trt thru for july this year 🤞🏼
Wow thanks so much! Had I prepared for rain, it would have been much more tolerable. It was rough especially at the end but I wouldn’t take it back for anything. Just a few hours after I was done, once I was warm and out of the rain, I started thinking about my next hike lol. I hope you have an amazing hike! My one regret is rushing. I should have taken more time to enjoy it. Thank you for watching and this comment!
@@dustanner I will keep that in mind 🙂
Absolutely amazing episode my friend
Thank you!!
Nice Video! I watched the first two and plan to watch the remainder. I did the TRT CCW or of Kingbury South starting in mid July this year. .. it was a great hike. I've also done the John Muir Trail and the High Sierra Trail over the past couple years... great to relive my hike through you videos!
Thanks so much, Juan! I watched some of your videos when I was planning my hike. Thank you for making and sharing them!
B itching like a trumper.
I hope you at least had fun editing this :-). Seriously, the most memorable moments in life when one is suffering like a dog :-).
lol
Same! I really did enjoy the trip. Those last few days were rough but I’m so glad I did them. I feel like they gave me a better foundation for future hikes. Next time, I’ll pack a rain poncho just in case ;)
You made it 20mi more than I did! I had a limp for months after.
150 or 130, epic either way! Congrats on your trek!
What dates did you hike? I've heard that the summers are usually dry?
'23 was not a normal year in the Sierra Nevadas.
August 14-22. Yeah I’d heard that too lol. It’s a an anomaly due to a hurricane near LA.
Brilliant episode bud, masterfully put together as always!
Cheers mate! Thank you for watching!
So very atmospheric and scenic, your content is just amazing! 👏👏
Wow, thanks so much!!
Dicks Pass is a wonderful oasis! With the views to the north and south! Dicks Peak is one of the most amazing summits in Desolation! Can see everything from there!
So true! It was a sight to behold for sure
Oh man, so relatable. My weather was perfect but I'd been limping in pain for 100mi. As I arrived in Desolation, which I'd been pushing long days to maximize my time in, I was just over it. I got to Fontanillis, the most beautiful place I've ever been, and felt nothing. Had to force a smile for a selfie. No family at home but I learned on trail that my sick cat was dying at the vet, and completing the trail fell from priority #1 to not ranked. Once I let go of that, I took a zero at Fontanillis and was able to enjoy it, and my final day to bail at Echo was long and grueling, but didn't feel rushed. Quite a dramatic place to go through an emotional rollercoaster!
It’s wild how much priorities can change when you’re deep in the woods alone and things aren’t going to plan. It was so difficult mentally and physically but I’m so glad I did it! You?
Anyone reading this... I live in Incline so hit me up in (these?) comments if you have an urgent need for brownies, baked goods or other supplies on the Rim.
@@dustanner Yeah, for sure. I had an idealized view of how it would go that had to be let go of, but it was still pretty epic. And best of all it's been the foundation for future adventures. I have always been one to learn the hard way! 😅
Wow, that was a surprise! I live in Incline and have yet to complete it...that's Dicks Lake!
I camped right where you sat for lunch on the bank of the creek after my near-0 through TC! Too close to the trail and water, and too tiny to fit properly, but I was in rough shape and desperate. LNT karma had me leave my bag of pegs there so I had to get creative setting up my tarp my last few nights.
Whoa, cool. I can imagine it being decent in a pinch. Oh no! Forgetting my stakes was a big fear of mine the entire hike.
loving these keep up the posting
Thank you!! Will do!
I can tell you are a Kraig Adams fan lol. How do you like the hyperlite pack ?
lol I had to google him but I have seen some of his videos. Love the hyperlight! It performed perfectly. Very comfortable with just the right amount of frame.
u look like tom cruise at the end of the video, reminds me of cartel movie from him. i pictured u in this video that you were trying to find some cocaine in the woods lol
Lolol amazing comment. Thanks for watching!!
I camped just past Brockway in a totally filthy, sloping, dusty crevice by the trail. Worst campsite of the trail, but I was past the point of having any standards! 😅 Also noticed that mileage discrepancy in those signs.
Early Sep?
Ha, missed the opening graphic. Wow we got a lot of rain in August.
lol yep!
Beautiful terrain!!!
Yes, it was stunning!
Not a dandilion, it is sasify and edible!
Oh cool! Great to know, thanks for watching!
@@dustanner I did the TRT in 2017 it was the only time in over 50 yrs I have had a bear issue.😀
Rose campground had the latest open in memory due to the standing water. The struggle is real.
If you're not having fun, why do it? Too often we do things because of how we believe others will perceive us. We convince we're doing it for ourselves or because we like it but in reality, subconsciously, it's really about how "valued" we'll feel by others. That's because, in our brain, Value = Love, and love is a basic human need. As a 25-year backpacker and Ironman Triathlete, I see this ALL the time. We base our value on our accomplishments. Know your why. Good luck with whatever you choose. ☮️❤️🤝
Great question. I’m sure it’s different for everyone. For me, I do to challenge myself. I’ve found that pushing beyond fun is a major growth opportunity. While it might not be fun in the moment, I never regret it. Type 2 fun as they say :)
fun is overrated...personally I don't like fun I like accomplishing goals I set for myself. You'll never see a tombstone engraved with "remembering someone who had lots of fun".
Sleeping is a major issue for me as well unfortunately, no matter how tired I am.
A good sleeping pad helped me tremendously. Absolutely worth the extra ounces.
@@dustanner yes I also invested into this, I am also taking a true pillow.
Very nice videos Dustin, love the commentary. You have to remember that this is type II fun, something you will appreciate only later :-).
You’re so right! Thank you!
Great views today. Keep up the good work. This trail looks nice.
Thank you for watching!!
You'd think someone with no experience would think to test their gear before they head out on a trek. And their tolerance for actually, you know, living outside in nature and being exposed to the elements. If rain on Day 4 puts a damper on your mood it seems like you might need a new hobby! You might be the most baby back bitch made gumby out there this month!
lol what a pity of a video. Being a spoiled crybaby at its finest
