    Hi, Erik - Good video! I really enjoy drawing trees, was fun to see your technique. I use either 0.05/0.1 fineliners or a Staedtler lead holder with HB lead, not sure what I like better. After watching this, though, may have to concentrate more on the pencil. I noticed you got some really nice contrast with your HB/2B leads - on my screen the 2B almost looked like ink. Do you find a particular brand/model of pencil and/or leads helps you in that? Or do you just pick up what's at hand? (And know better what you're doing!) Anyway, subscribed, checked out your Instagram page -wow - subscribed to that too. Thanks!

    • @erikfremstadart
      @erikfremstadart Місяць тому

      Hi William, thanks for watching and subscribing! My lead here is .3 mm on the HB and .5 mm on the 2B, with Pentel GraphicGear mechanical pencils. I don’t think the brand matters much though, just vary up the pressure and concentrate on small/thin marks. I do often use the HB and 2B combo to build contrast, i usually work in the range of 4H to 4B, but obviously that depends on the drawing as well 😊

      Think about what direction your light source is coming from in your drawing and what shadows it will cast. It can also help to use a reference photo if possible . I hope that helps 😊

      You can go back in and finesse them with shadows and midtones to thin them out. The key I was trying to show is just making sure the grass has highlights throughout and creating all the layers

    Man of my own heart! This is how I work…not the technique, but the whole grid idea…I know some people think it’s not actual drawing. The thing is, is the more adept for you to get to see the real world as it is which is… not actual edges or lines or anything but just the blurry fuzziness that is reality, the bigger you can make your grids and actually draw what you see. If you practice good enough and really get your eye to see what you want to put on paper you could split your grid up into four squares on a drawing! believe me, it’s true!
