College Sports Are Dying, What’s Next? (former Nike exec tells all)
Переглядів 1,2 тис.2 місяці тому
The NCAA House Settlement has officially upended the NCAA's Amateurism model that they've clung to for years. It rights some wrongs from the past, but opens up a wide new world in college sports where the SCHOOLS will be GMs and Salary Cap Managers for both men's and women's sports. NIL COllectives will still exist and the future of College Sports will get even weirder. In this video, I break d...

The Euro 2024 Tournament and Copa America reminded me of the toughest parts of Athlete Marketing, even at big companies like Nike or adidas. Aligning Athletes to the Product that fits them best, but also helps drive the business forward can be really challenging especially on the biggest stages. This week we dive into some of the nuances in this dynamic. We cover: _The Sports Marketing Framewor...

    Would love a short follow up to what you think the Aj’a Wilson and Caitlin Clark shoe rollouts will be like. Especially Clark given all the rookie year success. The womens game is about to explode and there are stars with legit brand awareness soon to turn pro. Could this be a women’s basketball signature shoe renaissance? Almost like the late 90s early 2000s for the men’s game. Great video!

    I remember when Jordan made Blake Griffin the face of a line vs giving him a designated signature and wondered why more brands did not take this approach. Granted, most athletes want a signature but it works or could. Also, loved Tatum having some WNBA athletes with PEs of his shoe. More of that all around.

    Dope content and examples as always J. Do you think Nikes focus on the American sport athletes will boost them back to the top? or is it the products themself that lack innovation ?

      it's always multifaceted! The styles aren't trendy right now, so that hurts too. When the athletes win and the product is good, it adds up!

    This translates perfectly to skateboarding - I’ve always been baffled when the riders choose bland shoes that are clearly not going to be commercial. This video lays out of the factors so well. The skate brands need to watch this!

      I've been in touch with a financial analyst ever since I started investing. Knowing today's culture The challenge is knowing when to purchase or sell when investing in trending stocks, which is pretty simple. On my portfolio, which has grown over $900k in a little over a year, my adviser chooses entry and exit orders.

    I think they have suffered from the gift and the curse of always being known for innovation, somewhere in between there they have lost a clear distinction between their cool casual product and their specialist product, it feels like they are always trying to achieve both elements whenever they release new product and I personally don’t think this needs to be the case for them anymore. No other sports brand can come close to Nikes archive but they keep trying innovate it as oppose to reinvigorating it. there was a time when I would not even look at another brand I was Nike to my very core but in the past 5 years I have only bought 4 pairs of their shoes and they have all been specialist product however, as for their casual everyday shoe (the majority target market) I cannot bring myself to purchase anything as they seem to have lost their cool factor because there is still so much of a focus on the innovation as oppose to the aesthetic. Keep a clearer distinction between the two and the consumers will be back eating out of their hands again. And don’t even get me started that whole retro thing..if I see another pair of retro Jordan’s in a new color way I am going to vomit!!!

    With the convo with the athlete with the NB and NIkE deals. I think you’re missing a huge market which is Athleisure; to me it’s not confusing the market at all. The NIKE shoe becomes equipment, and athletes may be drawn to that for pick up games, but then you have the NB shoe which is the off-court leisure shoe which may be preferred. Comfort with form, and it becomes more relatable to the market. Market saying I want to look like that, rather than be like that. Thoughts?

    • @JordanRogers2626
      @JordanRogers2626 Місяць тому

      fair, but neither brand sees it that way! They want both. NB is settling for one side now, so they can get both at the next level.

    It's not the shareholders Nike has to appease - it's the asset managers, namely BlackRock, Vanguard, State Street, etc. And they are all in on ESG and the woke agenda. THAT'S why Nike are getting screwed.

    Nike has completely missed the boat by not selling and innovating on the retro trainer trend which has been in fashion for the last 3 years. Cool dad trainers etc. Nobody wants another color of the AF1's or the dunk lows. very boring and no innovation and the look is just completely out of fashion. Nike has been so arrogant thinking that they can just release different colours and buyers will flock. Wrong. I have not brough a pair of Nike's for 5 years now and don't intend to buy a pair. NB, Adidas, Saucony, ets have much better offerings at often better prices. there are also so many start up brands that are innovating that Nike do no even come into my thinking. The one area they still excel is the Sports specific trainers like, soccer boots, track spikes etc.

    One day there could be an opposite situation of title ix… we could see college campuses with only 3-4 men’s teams and over a dozen women’s teams. Would be a flip on the history. There’s also opportunity for universities that are not profitable with football and basketball to diversify their offering to increase enrollment. College attendance has continued to decline, notably with less men going to college. Although universities have essentially become extension of hedge funds, to continue to garner higher enrollment they may not necessarily want to cut tons of sports just to bolster football (depending on division). The NIL as it is now (after House) is going to make the rich even richer and the best teams will become super teams in most sports. Therefore the schools below these super teams are going to have to recruit athletes to at they weren’t previously looking at. It also may force coaches to actually have to develop talent rather than just plug and play. Another thing that you touched on, it could force the federal government to invest in the Olympic sports to continue to have the pipeline. I think all it would take is a few Olympic cycles where the US crashes and burns to create pressure for that to happen.

    1- Nike should go back to not giving every athlete a signature shoe. In the 90s Marketing were effective campaign memorable when they just captured a moment of an athlete with better incentive if campaign pays off. 2-Go back to Marketing inspirational athletes instead on focusing on social media influencers. The practice It’s completely out of touch with the consumer. 3- What is Nike identity a sportswear brand or a luxury brand. The brands apparel is suppose to reflect sports rather than high end fashion. Also the direct to consumer should be re-evaluated. Sports in general touch on different parts of the economy. The partnership i stores cater to a variety of consumers at different price points. Nike must scale down its production it seems like they’re catering to a 3rd and or 4th hand consumer which are resellers.

    This slump certainly makes you wonder. I'm not sure that going back to the Running roots is the solution, because youth culture is constantly changing and has changed a lot since the 1980's and 90's when Running was booming. Running seems almost traditional and old fashioned now. In the 1980's jogging was new and fresh. For example, I wonder how much of Nike's footwear revenue in the last 20 years has been from performance footwear, compared to lifestyle? Although I recognize the importance of Nike apparel, which is probably mostly performance and should be included in the equation. But I can't see how for example in the 00's Running helped the huge retro sales, except maybe the Air Max channel of running inspired lifestyle. Court Shoes seem to have provided the much of the revenue and cultural engagement since then. And are likely soon destined now to fade as performance running and cross trainer shoes did before them. I can imagine the next success for Nike will come from finding the cultural connection to Gen A, B and C, which probably wont be the same as for previous generations, just like the retro trend appeared very strange to many Nike purists in the 00's. And it could be that Nike was even lucky that the wave just so happened to be retro (which they had plenty of styles for). Logically, a new connection will be just that, and something probably foreign to Boomers, Gen Xers and Millenials, who should become increasingly out of touch with youth culture as they age. I believe that the next core consumer Generation of Nike expects something intangible like connection through interaction and community. But I'm not sure if Nike can understand or develop those channels that are not obviously materialistic, especially for the older aged and classically trained and educated management. Being authentic with retro products was easy for them, how to create authentic personal connections maybe less so. What Nike does have going for it though is a history of connecting to evolving youth culture, from Nike SB to Colin Kaepernick. Unless of course they have become too focused on process and profit and are becoming just another business minded, traded company by osmosis.
