      I'm glad that you're looking at classes, it's a great way to improve your skills quickly! I do have an online class through Zoom coming up in January. It's 6 weeks long but it's a combination of mixed media techniques. This does include some collage but we'll be working with a variety of image transfers and mediums as well. All the information is available at my shop. Here's the link to the class. Just so you know, this is probably going to be the only live class I offer until the fall. shop.hopalongstudio.com/products/creative-art-journaling-transforming-images-into-stories-in-person-class-copy

    👋🏻 hey , i have these leaves but,, but i want that leave can live much more in three original colours, can it possible that they cal live in there original colours shape, some 2--4 months ,, sorry my english weak 😊 please response,,

    • @hopalongstudio
      @hopalongstudio 2 дні тому

      It's ok! If I understand you correctly, you want the leaves to stay the original colors? To get the best result out of sealing them, you do need to dry them in advance. This is going to cause a color shift. If you want them to stay the same color as when you harvested them, you'll probably need to find a different medium to keep the color true. I hope that answers your question!

    Would this method make the leaves stable enough for sewing through?

    • @hopalongstudio
      @hopalongstudio 19 днів тому

      You would need to add a lot of layers of the medium and dry between the layers to get the strength to sew through the leaves. I haven't tried it myself, so you'd have to experiment a bit.

    Question . New to paste. I work with decoupage on wood. Can paste be done over decoupaged wood? Does it adhere ? Not sure if i should seal the decoupaged wood first or will it adhere better without sealing? Using tissue paper for decoupage on wood.

    • @hopalongstudio
      @hopalongstudio 26 днів тому

      Good question. Is your wood flat or are you working on 3 dimensional objects? I do work on wood panels with paste, so I can give you a few tips that work for me. I always seal my panels first so that nothing from the wood (like sap and tannins) leech into the paint or decoupage altering the color. I tend to do this with a professional quality matte medium (Golden or Liquitex), but I know other artists who suggest using Golden GAC 200 for this step. I then add a layer of gesso to the surface so that there is enough tooth for the paste to adhere to. If you're using it with decoupage already on the surface, try adding a layer of clear gesso to help add tooth. Depending on the type of paste you use will affect the durability on wood. Modeling pastes have marble dust in them so they are much stronger. Crackle paste is much softer and will require a top sealant so that it does not flake off. I hope that answers your question! I could go on for a long time about pastes and how to use them on different surfaces...perhaps I need to create a video!

      @ ty! Yes since new to this just using flat wood surfaces. I normally use chalk paint and or gecco. I Love decoupage and feel its just boring not realizing there was a paste and moulding world out there! Where have i been? Haha

    Does sealing the leaves preserve the leaf color?

    • @hopalongstudio
      @hopalongstudio Місяць тому

      Yes, I haven't noticed a change in the leaf color. As long as they are dry before you seal them and you are using Golden or Liquitex Matte or Gel medium (not modge podge) the color should stay consistent. If you're going to add them to a project that is being hung in super bright light, you can always add a UV sealant as a precaution to prevent fading to your project.

    I really like how the stenciled modeling paste images pop over the background without becoming the focal image. Hahaha the Perfect Pearls maybe not the best choice. How about using a translucent wash? Or even a translucent gelly print layer? 😊 I would like the Yes paste plus glazing medium recipe! I wasn’t happy with Yes Paste by itself, so this sounds ideal!

    • @hopalongstudio
      @hopalongstudio Місяць тому

      Thanks! I love using modeling paste on my projects, I love the texture it can add to the pages. LOL, the perfect pearls were fun, but probably not the right medium. I tend to use acrylic washes, but thought I'd mix it up a bit! That's a great idea about using a translucent gelly print! I'll have to try that in an upcoming project! Great suggestion! I'll try to get a video together soon with the Yes Paste recipe. It's an amazing glue and by adding other ingredients it's even better!

    I am looking to preserve some leaves for a Senior Thesis piece I'm working on. I have tried the waxing method but found that it can be too bulky and does not always preserve the color. Would this method preserve the color long-term? Thanks so much!

    • @hopalongstudio
      @hopalongstudio Місяць тому

      Sounds like an interesting project. Because the leaves are dried, whatever the color they are when dried is the color they stay after gel medium or matte medium is added to them. The gel encapsulates the leaves which protects them and helps retain the color. To prevent yellowing, use the Golden or Liquitex branded mediums as they are artist quality and will give you better results. I tend to use my leaves in projects that will not see a lot of sun (I like to work in a journal), so I haven't run into any fading. If you are going to display the leaves in a sunny area for an extended period of time, and you're worried about fading, use a UV varnish to help protect them. Here's the one that I tend to use for my paintings: Krylon Professional UV Varnish amzn.to/3UJFO7J

      Yes, so this technique works for flat work in a journal, on a canvas or on any paper (to make cards, scrapbooking pages, etc.) You can use them on lots of different surfaces. I've been meaning to add a few to lampshades, but haven't found the perfect image yet! Here's a couple of pumpkin images I did with napkins: ua-cam.com/video/docSsrYP26Q/v-deo.htmlsi=gzXGdh-k-I1mES2Z ua-cam.com/video/docSsrYP26Q/v-deo.htmlsi=SCUN0dhvF7HWVZJG Any vase, serving tray, or bottle would work with napkins as well. There's so many ways that you can use them to create beautiful techniques! If you'd like to see more techniques using napkins, I've created a full playlist of my favorite techniques: ua-cam.com/play/PLItKszBdNP4I8KRg2ZCksvAWXDgAKhdD5.html&si=Uu3XhLnjy_6sgBqx

    I would love to find a way to make a light spray mist. The Distress sprays come out with too much pressure. I want to use them for backgrounds on watercolor paintings, but every time I try, it applies too much. Love any suggestions ❤️

    • @hopalongstudio
      @hopalongstudio 2 місяці тому

      So the easiest way to create your own sprays is with stamp re-inkers (I tend to use my distress ink re-inkers, not the oxide ones). This gives you a lot of control over the intensity of the color. Start with a few drops of ink in your spray bottle and mix with water. If it's too diluted, add more color. But this is a great way of getting the color load that you want and the control over the mix. You could even mix a few together to make your own custom colors! I keep so many of the spritzer bottles in my house that come with eye glass cleaner, makeup products, etc. They often have great misters that are much easier to control, are decent quality, and they are usually on the smaller side, which is perfect for art application.

      Are you working mostly in pencil on a paper surface? Depending on your medium and what you're using, I use different things. For canvas work with acrylic paint, I like to use Caran d'Ache Watercolor Crayons ( amzn.to/4dTAvcA). They are easy to apply, and with a layer or two of acrylic paint, I don't see them anymore. With my style, I don't mind having a little bit of the acrylic and watercolor crayon mix together on a canvas. For working on paper with pencil, if you want to create a quick sketch that's easy to remove completely, I would try a Conte' Crayon (amzn.to/48bEq3j). When used with a kneaded eraser, I find that it can remove all traces of the crayon, depending on your application. I demoed these Conte' Crayons in one of my early videos where I was discussing tracing images. ua-cam.com/video/L6RbiODIDN4/v-deo.htmlsi=YU3XsVlkwOHxf9FT From your comment, I wasn't sure what medium you were using and what kind of surface. I hope this answers your question!

    Beautiful collage papers, so many ideas to try!!! I just wanted to mention that if you spritz a thin layer of water over the top of your mediums that you don't use often, it will seal the medium and it won't dry out. All you have to do is give it a stir and it's ready to go again.

      Thank you! I hope that you give these techniques a try! That's a great tip, thanks for sharing! Since I created this video, I also learned another great trick- add a layer of Glad Press n' Seal on top of all my medium containers. You can also push them into the containers if you've mostly used a product. It keeps them from drying out as fast and makes the lids easier to get off. Who knew, right?

    I was hoping for a link to where i can get those mark-making tools. I worry about getting something that will damage my plate.

    • @hopalongstudio
      @hopalongstudio 2 місяці тому

      Absolutely. So you're looking for tools that are soft silicone or rubber. Here's a few affiliate links to tools that I found on Amazon and Blick that should be soft and won't damage your plate. These Art Alternatives Scrapers are soft and they are the same ones that I have and use: shrsl.com/4plm2 These are some Gelli Branded ones, I haven't used them, but I'm assuming they will be gentle to your plate since they're supposed to be used with the gel plate: amzn.to/3zVWbXH The hard thing about finding tools online is some of them look soft but end up being really hard, so they may cause marks in your plate. For example, these Catalyst tools are a hard nylon and are meant for scraping paint onto surfaces. I have some, I like them, but I do need to be careful (especially with the pointed ones) not to hurt my gel plate. amzn.to/3zSCNuJ I hope that helps that you find the perfect tool for your gelli printing!

    WHen using a compass with a sharp pin anchor, try putting a couple of layers of masking tape to protect your center point as you will return often to the same point so leave the tape on for the duration of circle drawing. Glow in the dark tape is cloth and cloth works better. Also if you need a highlight in a drawing and can cut a piece of tape in the shape of that bright spot, like a reflection on an eye, cut the tape out and stick it on, after days of drawing it will remain brighter than the rest of the page that have had dirty hands sliding over it with pencil graphite spread around and just draw around it.

    This is exactly what I had tested with a couple balls, and am planning to do with a bunch of them. Your video is exactly what I needed to fill in the blanks with how to go about it. One difference is that I have little tiny glass ornaments to colour, so they are a challenge. Thanks so much for sharing this! ❤

      You're welcome, I'm glad that this was helpful! It's a great way to color ornaments and I've had mine for several years now and they still look as good as when I first created them! Have fun with your tiny glass ornaments, I'm sure they'll look amazing but will probably be a bit more challenging!

    is acetate archival - to glue as collage onto mixed media artwork on canvas or paper?

    • @hopalongstudio
      @hopalongstudio 3 місяці тому

      It's something that I haven't thought about before, but that's a good question. Though doing some searching online, there seems to be some varieties that are archival and others that are not. Any time I'm working on a canvas and I'm worried about the archival quality of a medium, I make sure to add an artist grade matte medium or gel over and under the paper or product. This will encapsulate it with an archival medium, thus making it archival. If I was working with acetate and wanted to keep some of the shine, then I'd stick with a glossy medium.

      Make sure to check out some of my other videos. I've been using these pens for the last few years in all sorts of projects and getting great results! The one thing with the cheaper pens is that sometimes the paint likes to dry on the nibs. I use a baby wipe or paper towel with some water to scrub off the dried paint and that keeps them working really well.
