Got the pack for Christmas, searched for a tutorial because i never painted miniatures before and yours popped up. I love how you explain everything, it makes it fairly easy to follow alongside. Thank you for the video, yours look awesome. 👍 I hope mine looks even half as good as yous.
Thank you I am glad you found the video helpful. Good luck with your model.
The post credits super cut 😂
😂
Love it. I want to take another crack at this starter pack. They look awesome
Thanks I'm glad you liked the video
Hello from switzerland. I painted the box yesterday before watching your tutorial still turned out good. Love your tipps with the paint and shades.
Hello from the UK to you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video thanks for your kind comment
Nice. I watched your first video, then saw this one. The difference is amazing. Really shows how people improve. I would have liked a side-by-side comparison of the two on the turntable at the end of this video to see the improvement. Personally I like seeing people's 'then' and 'now' miniatures as it give me hope I'll also improve with practice. 👍 (PS - I watched this as I've got my starter box set in the post, should arrive next week).
Thank you, I really appreciate it. I totally forgot to do a proper side by side in the final edit and really wish I had. Usually I'm pretty checked out by the time a video gets released as I've been listening to my own voice for too long. As for improving your skills, the way I did it was to focus on single minis and try to create a specific look. Cheap second hand models, job lot purchases of bits and some of the cheaper kits like grots can make great practice pieces for a little trial and error. Once I find something I like I then try and optimise it into as few steps as possible so it can be batch painted with minimal effort. Plenty of creators do tutorials or guides on their work so it's easier than ever to find solutions if you get stuck creating a specific look or effect. Most of the fun for me is figuring out how something was done, it's like a puzzle to solve.
USA release when?
Spring 2025 no official date given yet.
got any recommendations for helping my brush stay intact/restoring?
Brush soap is great for reforming brushes. You work the brush in, shape it, leave it for a bit then rinse. I use one "The master's brush cleaner" which is available on Amazon. Sometimes I use airbrush cleaner and a paper towel if it's quite bad. If a brush is too far gone for that I dip it in my Tamiya extra thin but that sometimes trashes it completely, depending on the brush. If it survives it's good as new.
They are not available in the USA yet but you can go and register your email. Thank you for the info this will be my first year subscribing to the magazine.
I just bought Starter Pack(medium one, not ultimate) and while waiting for it to arrive(gotta wait for 1-2 weeks), I bought this Infernus marines set in the local shop to learn and test different methods. Gotta say, this one is the easiest(yes, easiest) and most efficient one. Since I'm still waiting for my Primer to arrive, painting it full black first is the real deal. Thank you for the vid, really changed my experience P.S. I have some other colours, like Nuln Oil, helped me a lot to get fast shade details that you did with black+white.
Thanks I'm glad you found it useful, it definitely helps to have more colours to save effort on mixing and priming is absolutely the way to go.
I wouldve hoped i found this when I started painting, Looks so good and very understandable (and doable :P)
Thanks I'm glad you like it, it means a lot to me
Thanks. I'm ooking to start playing with my son. I ordered the 2nd edition core set. And looking at the local ads for used lots for sale. Does the Game Length (time) increase proportionately with the number of ships you add?
That's pretty cool, yeah generally if kept simple it scales in line with each ship's additional movement, actions and combat. I find that game length varies depending on the complexity of the special rules and abilities in play. Some builds and match ups can drag on, especially if you are unlucky with dice rolls or keep colliding with each other's ships.
GREAT JOB I SAW SOO MANY VIDEOS FOR HOW TO PAINT U DID THE BEST JOB THANKS FOR UR HELP
Thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it
I'm glad I saw your assessment here, I was hoping to get a set and paint the marines different chapters and wasn't sure about the insignias based on just the box art. Glad to know they're part of the model beforehand
OP is Organized Play, It's the game that got me into the hobby with 2nd Edition and I will play it for a long time to come
Thanks for clarifying, I wasn't entirely sure. I got into X Wing during the first release and just played it with my family and friends. The announcement will never change that or the love we have for it.
There is a whole lot of creators that will still make awesome stuff for both game!
Good games never die and I'm not giving up on it now either.
It's a bummer, but here's hoping some community-driven balance updates or rules tweaks emerge after the next year of tournaments.
The game is now in the best hands possible, the community that loves it.
"Thank you for reaching out. Development on these games is done. Reprints for existing products could continue as long as there is demand." This update came through right as I posted this video lol
X Wing is no longer being developed, please keep this in mind before jumping into this hobby.
Aye. Sad day. AMG really dropped the ball on what was my fav game. I’m hoping the community keeps second edition alive.
Will there be some other game in development instead or another company pick it up or is there just no hope
@@theclash24 At the moment there is no hope officially but there has been talk within the community of keeping it going unofficially.
@@JimsTableTopWargaming I wanted a few standard 2.0 stuff for me and my son to just play
@@theclash24 I'm sorry to hear that, hopefully you can find some stock. AMG did say to me in an email "Reprints for existing products could continue as long as there is demand." Take that with a pinch of salt though. It is extremely disappointing, I put a lot of time and money into the game so I could play it with my friends.
@bobafett2243 Update finally
Your local shop just recently stocked up? This video was posted four months ago too. With all the hush hush about Armada/X-Wing from AMG and Asmodee, the community here is wondering what is the state of the game. Are they developing new content or going to reprint current low stock? Is the license gone? Should I just not bother anymore? Wonder if your LGS has some insight? Does your LGS have an online store? Ship international?
Huh?
I am not an authority on the subject of x wing so I cannot answer these questions or concerns. If I were you I would reach out to AMG for further information. The link for the Warp is in the description and last I checked they don't ship internationally.
@bobafett2243 I reached out to Atomic Mass Games with your concerns. If I hear anything substantial back from them I'll put it in a video.
@@JimsTableTopWargaming Awesome, thanks. I did the same few days ago. I will let you know what I hear. So far the response is, my inquiry was placed on hold while they investigate. We’ll see.
@@bobafett2243 Unfortunately I did get a response and it was just "if we had any info we would post it on our socials" so no answers to your questions.
I am always worried when i do the spill over of lights to make it look like it is glowing that it will look like i just cannot paint within the lines but i really like your method! I will try that next time
The amount of money i am going to save! I don't have a fancy vibration machine but i can shake with the best of them 😅
its always the small details the aquilas the gloss on the lights and glass really brings the set to life IMO
It's those fine details that make it interesting
So it is not necessary to use primer ? I have the same set and I painted it in the same way without using primer but I don't know how it will remove paint if I leave it like that? The truth is I'm a newbie and I don't want to use those types of tools yet.
You can paint without a primer but it's not usually recommended as primers will help the paint stick better and you don't have to fight the paint as much during that first coat. If you want to ensure your work is not ruined when touching or moving it, I would recommend sealing it with a varnish. Either a spray can like Citadel Munitorum or one of the many pots of varnish that can be applied by brush like Vallejo. Keep in mind the difference between Matt, satin and gloss varnish.
Most people I know started off without priming or varnishing their models, it's just best practice to do so if you feel comfortable with it as it makes life easier and helps to achieve and then maintain a great finish. Everyone has a different ability level when it comes to the hobby so just focus on what you feel you need to and expand and experiment when you are ready.
@@JimsTableTopWargaming thank you very much for clarifying my doubt 😁
Such a good tutorial! Can't wait to try replicate with my first models (Infernus Squad) for my Bday!
Thanks, have a happy birthday! Glad you liked the video
At 10:03, I don't believe you have to spend an action to have R2-D2 recover a shield. (There is no "Action: " ahead of his ability.) Nice video. Warm regards, Rick.
Thanks, Rick, glad you like the video. You are right, it does not have the action keyword.
This was a very fun chat, and thanks for uploading this!
No worries, thanks for having me on your stream
Great video, could yo also add one with the so called 2.5 rules?
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, yes I have plans to cover the various ways to play in the future starting with the current tournament rules. Keep an eye out for that sometime in the near future.
great video, very clear, thankyou Jim!
Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it
The final result looks so much better than the tutorial from the official Warhammer UA-cam channel. I'm definitely gonna follow your video when my Starter Set arrives! Thanks for the awesome content!
Thanks I'm glad you liked the video and I hope your models turn out great
to be fair the warhammer tutorial is to just get started someone who is starting out might get a bit overwhelmed by this video
Fantastic video
Thank you, I am glad you liked the video
Something to keep in mind: since Asmodee transferred handling to the game to Atomic Mass Games, there have been a number of rules changes that are colloquially known as "2.5" rather than second edition, but is officially still part of second edition and is referred to as such by AMG. The rulebook you get in the core set is very different to the one you download off the website. For instance: obstacles are much more dangerous, like asteroids doing 1 damage automatically, with a die roll to see if you take another. Also, you can make attacks against enemies that you are in base contact with. And perhaps the most important part is that there are objectives in play that alter how you play each game. As such, I highly recommend discarding the printed rulebook and using the downloadable instead, as the rules changes are significant enough that it will cause confusion.
I pinned this because it's correct and good reading, thanks for bringing up a great point. I took a look at the full rules prior to this video and made the decision to stick to the booklet as a way to reduce time-to-play for newcomers. I have run a few different game systems for people in the past and found that overwhelming people in their first game is usually detrimental, so I kept it fairly simple. That said, if you pick up the game and want to expand your collection to play with others in the community then the official and up to date rules are essential reading. There are many ways to play X Wing which I will eventually cover in future videos and how you play will be a matter of preference. Currently I am familiarising myself with the rules for core and epic games so I can do some bigger games with my friends in the Clone Wars setting. These game tutorials take longer to produce than my usual painting tutorials due to the amount of editing that goes into them, but I aim to get more of them out in due course.
I personally don't like objectives. I came to fight. So fight I will. UwU
"Officially" yes it's 2.5. Though it's disingenuous for AMG to try to call it second edition at all. So much was changed and is still morphing that at least as the most honest it should be called either third edition, or "the AMG edition". And it's a dead/dying game anyway so I don't know if a video like this will be anything but a well presented historical demo anyway within a year or so. Barring some massive relaunch/boot lol
fantastic video. I just subscribed :). I have a question; I have 5 infernus. How do I make the lighter blue mix consistent across all of them?
Welcome, thanks for the sub I am glad you liked the video! There are several ways: You can try and match it by eye like I did, the paints dry a little darker and you use the dry paint on your pallet as a way to eyeball it. Not the best way. You could mix a decent amount into a spare airtight container or pot or something if you have one. That way you have enough for all five. You could make a basic wet pallet out of a container, a sponge and some baking paper. This slows down the drying of your mixed paint, giving you plenty of time to hydrate the paint with a little water off the brush. You could just buy Calgar Blue and Fenrisian Grey paints as this is what I was aiming for anyway and then you have consistent paints for further models. Hope this helps, let me know if you have further questions.
Great video. Can I ask where you get those clippers from, they look sturdy! I can't seem to find anything with that brand name.
I originally purchased them from a small model shop called KB models, which has unfortunately shut down. But with some digging I found they are from expo tools: www.expotools.com/acatalog/75550-5-Inch-Easy-Grip-Pliers--Side-Cutters-75550.html
@@JimsTableTopWargaming thanks, much appreciated!
wish i had know this when i bought my starter box and started painting, covered all the models in shade and they look like they swam through a river
In fairness they probably would be pretty filthy towards the end of a long campaign
You can reduce some of that effect by dry brushing your midtone armor color back onto the large flat panels, it will restore much of the vibrancy taken away by the wash and the dry brush method will leave the dark recesses untouched
Looks a bit different to when I would play, can the old models be used alongside gen 2?
Yes, however it does require the purchase of a conversion kit to bring the cards and tokens up to the new standard
i wish i had found you when i was looking for a tutorial on this box. i love how this model has turned out!
Thank you
damn how do you keep that brush so straight
My pinky finger is usually touching the model I am painting steadying the brush hand. I try to limit unnecessary movements in my arms by leaning on my desk as well. It gets achy after a while so make sure to take regular breaks.
Blood angels are my favorite, because "Space Crusade board game". The only commander that could reliably destroy the dreadnought was the Blood Angel Commander with the power sword and power glove.
Very nice, Blood Angels have some really awesome lore and models, especially around the Death Company.
To anyone starting out. Invest in a can of undercoat. Whether from GW, or a hobby shop.
It's good advice
Man you are really good, I can't wait to see what will come next.
Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed the video
it's great to see how dramatically your skills have improved since the last time! The edge highilghts on the intercessors were way too thick and excessive last time, but you absolutely nailed them now.
Thank you, I was overly reliant on my detail brush before I started this series and it's a real eye opener seeing them side by side now. Really happy with the progress.
Would be so cool if you did a follow up video taking it to the next level, maybe with like a budget limitation so you can't add too much but what you would buy and paint next.
I'll take a look at it and see what I can come up with, thanks for the suggestion.
@@ThatAngryPunk this would a great idea.
That poor brush. GW gives a chick for a job that needs a hen.
Yeah by far the hardest part of this start painting series has been coping without all my usual brushes. I don't mind the starter brush but I think that's Stockholm syndrome at this point.
Oh goodness, this effect is giving me some unholy ideas. (More horny than anything)
bought this earlier today, tutorial will help loads , thank you
