@wolfiber Yes. You just have to have a separate servo for aileron 1 and aileron 2.
@wolfiber. Yes. You just have to have a separate servo for each aileron.
does this radio read out other types of switch operations? (voice commands for what the switch operates) for example dual rates high/low etc? I have problems remembering how I set each plane up and having it tell me what the switch is doing would be great.
No. You can set up voice alerts on things like battery voltage, speed, altitude when using the proper telemetry modules, but what you are asking is not available.
@rcron4849 i like my old futaba 12fg and want a newer futaba. The 16iz are all over forums for $300 and i was about to pull the trigger but not now. Looks like the next futaba that can do what i want is over $2000 yikes. I guess im going with a spektrum nx10+ then. Ill have to buy a few receivers and hopefully sell my futaba stuff. They're falling behind everyone else. Even cheap radiomaster transmitters have this function
I have to say thank you for posting your a credit for this hobby and futaba users
Thank you for your kind words. I have found most in this hobby are willing to share what they have learned with others; I am just glad I can do the same.
Thank you so much
hai sir.... is it can set telemetry rpm with rx 6208sb ?
The 6208SB receiver is a FASST receiver. My understanding is you need a FASSTEST receiver to use telemetry with the 14SG transmitter. This is based on the statement in the owners manual, page 91 regarding TELEMETRY function.
How about a video for flapperon with the same radio. Thanks for taking the time to make them, quite useful.
Ron. Can I use the t14sg with the R617FS reciever to configurate a wing with single airlerons to work as flaperons? thanks
By single ailerons, I assume ailerons controlled by 1 channel, which would include 2 aileron servos connected with a Y connector. I do not think there is any way that this can be done; I will try and check it out over the next couple of days, but I don't think it is possible. If some one out there knows a way, please let us know; your input would be greatly appreciated.
Can I adjust my elevator for each flap settings No flap Take off flap and full flap
Yes, follow the video exactly, and you will have 3 position flaps; no flaps with SW G back towards you, mid position on SW G for mid flaps and SW G forward gives full flap. Then in the video I showed elevator only for full flaps with switch G forward; that is because on most planes I fly, elevator does not need to be used for 1st position flaps, just full flaps; however you can set the elevator movement for 1st position flaps also. Notice in the video when you set the elevator movement with Switch G, there are 2 rate setting for elevator movement.
What, are you some kind of genius or something? Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I can't tell you how many hours I have spent doing it by trial and error and never getting it right.
Thanks for the kind comments. It is always good to hear that people are being helped!
What if we want the flaps to move up and down slowly? How do setup the elevator to match the flap speed when the flaps go up and down?
Sorry it took me so long to answer you; sometimes LIFE just interferes with our plans. There is no speed adjustment for elevator here. If you use the separate servo speed adjustment, it will slow your elevator movement at all times, and I don't think that is wise. I have not had a chance to test it yet, but it may be possible to utilize the airbrake function to set the flap and elevator movement; this might work and then allow us to use the speed adjustment for flap and elevator which I think would only affect the elevator speed with movement of the switch and not movement of the elevator stick??? I will try and check this out soon!
hi. i can not link the powerbox sparkswitch rs rpm telemetry(promises that is futaba combatible) with my 14SG. i follow all yours steps but i think 14sg can't recognise it somehow. is act, is on screen, but i didn't try to start the plane.is any simple steps to follow so i could understant that 14sg recognises the sensor? what should i have to to?
I apologize for not getting back to you sooner; Life sometimes has different priorities! I am not totally sure what device you are trying to link with your radio. My understanding is only Futaba sensors will link to the Futaba system. I may be wrong about that..? If you are referring to the RPM sensor that comes from your engine ignition module, then that connection is meant only for a digital tachometer which plugs in and give RPM readings directly from the ignition sensor on the crankshaft. The advantage is accuracy and no issues with light conditions, batteries etc. The tach connection is only meant for tuning your engine on the ground....and I have never seen a way that would allow you to tie it into your telemetry system. If you are referring to a telemetry sensor, then you may want to contact Futaba service center to find out about compatibility.
Thank you Sir for sharing your knowledge, it was absolutely helpful !
Glad to help!

Did you pay 350.00 for a Dave Brown spinner ? Robart doesn't list any retracts for this plane
At the time of the build, Robart had retracts for this plane...they were the same mechanisms as the retracts for the Top Flite Giant P51, but had longer struts. If you call Robart and speak to one of their reps, I am sure they can supply you with a pair. The Hangar 9 electric retracts are well made and look great; there is one drawback to them; you have to keep your airspeed down until they are raised, or you will have them stalling; then you must lower your speed and recycle them to get them closed. They may have corrected that issue by now. I'm not sure. I don't remember the actual price of the Dave Brown spinner. I think I paid about $200 for the spinner and adapter. It was considerably cheaper than the Hangar 9 spinner which was already painted for their trim scheme; since I was wanting Ferocious Frankie, I chose the Dave Brown spinner and painted it accordingly. The Dave Brown spinner was an excellent product!
@@rcron4849 ... I emailed Robart about the retracts and never got an answer yet. Eflite has a set of retracts ( EFLG700) but on backorder not sure what to do.
Great explanation but you forgot to move the ailerons while flaps deployed to confirm aileron movement.
RC Ron you are the master and I can't thank you enough for posting this video. I was setting up an Eflite model for flying by my house today and could not for the life of me figure out how to set flap positions on a switch........you obviously led the way to thinking outside the box for me as I also realized that just because one selects 2 ail.2flap that you don't actually have to use 2 seperate Rx slots for each functions.........just change the funtction name and viola. I was using the 1 ail selection and was dumbfounded that there was no "flap setting in the model menu. The 16iz is really loaded with features that you just opened the door to. I come from the radios of the late 60's so I always say that if one can't dial in a model with these new radios, then it just isn't a flyable model............Thank you so much for your time and easy step by step explanation. -Mike
Thank You for your kind words! I also started in the sixties; my first RC model was a single channel with Citizenship Radio using a rubber band powered actuator. It was amazing that fliers could actually do loops and spins with a single channel plane! I enjoyed those plane & radio combinations, but I thank God for the equipment advances we enjoy today!
Hola tengo el mismo radio y el killswich solo funciona en los canales 123456 pero estos ya estan asignados y no funciona en 9 10 11 12 Ud sabe por que?

You're welcome
Hi Ron. May sound like a stupid question. How does an 8 channel receiver give 14 channels?
The 7008SB receiver, which for a long while was the standard receiver in the complete Futaba 14SG package, actually gives you 7 channels plus a serial bus port. This actually gives you 7 channel operation; however you can expand it by using a SBD-1 decoder, which adds 3 channels. You can also add a 2nd decoder which gives you an additional 3 channels. The SBD-1 decoder will cost around $70; it plugs into the SB port, and has 3 leads that the servos plug into. If you only need 1 to 3 additional channels it is an easy way to get the additional channels you need. If you go this route, it costs less than buying a 14 channel receiver, and allows use of a receiver you already have. You will also have to invest about $30 for a SBC-1 channel setting tool which allows you to assign the channel your servo is operating on. The SBC-1 is a one time purchase. Using the SBD-1 decoder allows you to use analog servos but if you want to plug servos directly into the serial bus port, you must use serial bus terminals & Futaba digital servos; there may be other brand digital servos that will work, but I am not sure about that. If you use more than one SBD-1 decoder you will also need a Futaba 4way SB hub. I hope this answers your question.
@@rcron4849 thanks ron. I understand now.
@@rcron4849 hi ron. One final question. I know how to set up flaps on futaba 14sg on my glider and i have the right slider controlling the flaps, but i want to gradually deploy the flaps as opposed to them going to a set position!! On the right slider setting page there is a picture of a line with off on top and on at the bottom, which works as it should but i want to gradually deploy them. Do you know how i could do that? How do i get my flags to deploy gradually?
Since you are wanting to use the RS (right slider) as your control, you can simply go into the LINK menu, open FUNCTION menu. go down to channel you have flaps on; then Move your cursor to first column (CTRL) and assign RS as control. That should allow you to move the flaps at any speed you desire. If the slider direction is not the direction you prefer for flaps down then you might have to set up a programmable mix that will do what you want. If that is the case, then get back with me and I will send you explicit directions for that..
@@rcron4849 Hi Ron. I followed your instructions on your previous message. It worked. Thank you very much for your prompt rely and help. Futaba's instruction manual is not the easiest to follow.
Hi Ron which sd card used ? I have 16 gb and it is unknown by the T14.
Page 19 of 14SG manual states size must be 32 MB -2GB. I have never gotten that message except with a defective SD card, as long as I stayed in the specified range.
Hello Ron. Thanks for a very useful tutorial ! Hope you still read comments because I have an issue at the final step copying. All goes well until I hit the last "rtn for 1 sec" to execute the copy when I get the message: FAILED! Hit any key. The card is old but seems in good shape, and is not in the "locked" position. I see Futaba recomends trying a brand new card if the card is old. Anyways I thought I could ask before I go buying another. In beforehand thanks :) Terje
It took me a little longer than I wanted to try and answer you; I had an SD card that I knew was bad, so I wanted to see if it would create the scenario you described. It did not. My transmitter would not recognize the cards presence, and would not format it. It still could be a problem with your card, since the problem with your card may be very different than the problem with the bad card I used. The only other thing I can think of is when you are in the copy menu, be sure you have transmitter selected as the source on the left side, and then card selected on the right side for destination. Other than that, a bad card could possibly cause that, however I could not duplicate your problem. I would try a new card, and if the problem continues contact FUTABA USA.
@@rcron4849 Thanks a lot, no worries about answering late :) I tried a new SD today, but then nothing even happens.... I see in the manual that the transmitter should "discover" it and formating should be straight forward. I have to T14SG´s and both behave the same way...🤔 So I guess I will have to contact Futaba.
I did not mention it, but be sure you have the latest updates on your transmitter....sometimes updating will surprise you?
Thanks again. Actually, it seems I tried a new card that was too large (64MB), while the max. cap. for the transmitter, according to another video I found, is 32. I had a 16MB in an old camera and it worked ! So now all works as it should with that card 🤠
Yes, The maximum is plainly stated in the manual but I did not know what would happen...Thanks for the info. I'm glad you have things working now!
What if I want to use ailerons as flaps?
I published a video in April of this year, Programming Flaperons, which is using the Camber flap mix to set up ailerons to function as both ailerons and flaps. Check it out, I think that is what you are wanting.
❤
The flap set menu: is the ”offset” basically the same thing as ”subtrim?” And similarily, are ”up” and ”down” the same thing you can, alternatively, configure in servo travel end-point menu? Of course the flap set menu seems to be a very convenient way to adjust flap throws.
Yes, you are accomplishing the same thing from different approaches. The advantage of the flap set menu is that you not only have total throw adjustments but also offset adjustments in the same menu function. However, the up/down adjustments are only as much as your end point settings allow. Things like the flap set menu provides ; up/down throw , and neutral offset adjustments , as well as many other functions like switch setting, camber mix to aileron/elevator can be handled with the programmable mixes. It's just easier in most cases to use Futaba's preprogrammed mixes.
@@rcron4849 Thanks Ron, once again! very helpful!
Hi Ron, thank you for an excellent video! Very helpfull! One question - why to change AIL2 to FLAP2? -> is it just because you want to demonstrate how to make this thing work with 7 channels? In other words, assigning only one active individual channel for both ailerons? So I assume this AIL2-> FLAP2 is not imperative?
I am showing how to do this with 7 channels. Most of the time, it is not necessary to have 2 channels used for ailerons. In our model setup, we selected 2AIL 2FLP. This is necessary for some of our options. About the only time we need separate aileron channels is if we need AIL differential, but if necessary that can be handled mechanically. Having 2 flap channels allows us a rotary knob or slider to adjust flap positions in up position. This is needed quite often due to temp changes which cause the flaps servos to buzz in the up position. Once we select 2AIL 2FLP it provides the FLP SET menu which provides individual adjustments for flap throw and neutral adjustments. Yes, these are choices we must make when using only 7 channels. Also, notice that the gear channel is still operative. I chose to leave it functioning because so many fliers wanting 3 position flaps are flying models with retracts. Hopefully this video will demonstrate how to survive with just a 7 channel receiver; personally I use 10 channels or more on most of my models, using a 7 channel receiver with a serial bus decoder for additional channels, or I just install a 14 channel receiver,
Thanks Ron, makes sense. I happen to be building a model requiring 8 channels and the receiver I’m using is an 8 channel one. Hence I think I shall follow your instructions with exception that I will have separate aileron channels, for convenience reasons.
Hi RC RON, very well explained. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
@@rcron4849nice explanation
Hi Ron, hope all is well, weell apreciated your video on flaps, i have a 8fg, wich seems to have same software, but i cant find 3 rates for the sg switch. any ideas, no mode a or b. help would be much apreciated, regards
It has been a while since I have done anything with an 8FG....I owned one before I got the 14FG. The first thing I would do is make sure you have the latest software installed. I will take a look at some of the info I had for the 8FG, & let you know if I find anything. Are you unable to get the switch set menu, or is the situation that you are going through the actions to set the switch for 3 on/off positions and yet the flaps are only responding to 2 positions? On the 14SG, when using camber flap to elevator function, the MODE A or B option came with one of the software updates on the 14SG. Prior to that update, you could only set 2 positions.
Hi. Thanks for sharing. Is it possible to activate the 14SG voice message for switches? Thanks
If I understand your question correctly, you are wanting to use a switch to activate voice messages with your 14SG? Voice is only available by using an earphone. This is quite convenient; I use a earphone in my right ear only. This allows me to get the info I want, yet I can still can easily hear what is happening on the flight line! In this video I describe how to set up voice alerts from a Futaba GPS unit, and they are controlled by a switch. In the mid position there are no messages, yet when I want altitude or speed I either select the forward or rearward position for the voice info. This way I am not constantly hearing info throughout the flight, but only when I want particular info, I can select it .with a switch. I hope this answers your question; if not, feel free to reply.
@@rcron4849 Thank you so much for your reply. Actually this is very useful information. I fly fixed wings. I will explain my question by giving an example. In my Spektrum Radio I can program the switches so that if I move the switch up or down it will tell me the switch function, for example takeoff flaps, landing flaps , gear up , gear down, low rates, high rates , mid rates, etc. there is a list of maybe 100 voice note programmable to each switch. I understand from you that I need to use a headphone, but it seems that the option of assigning voice notes to switches is not there. I bought my SG14 many years ago and just opened it soon since I was using spektrum, but I love the Futaba now, and feel the difference, and I wonder how other top quality ones like Jeti or Micado operate. My other question is about flaps settings. In Spektrum I enter the flap movement range and the elevator compensation as a % and set a movement speed. I think this option is not in the 14SG because I have programmed elevator compensation for flaps separately using mixing, but my issue now is that the flaps deploy scale in a speed of 3 seconds but the down elevator movement happens on the spot (not mirroring the slower movement in flaps). Also, something I wanted to know,is the 14SG meant for Heli’s more than fixed wing. I heard some people saying that. Just interested to know. Thanks a lot
The 14SG had a heli version...I'm not sure if they still make it or not. You are correct, voice notes for switches are not available on the 14SG. There is a speed function on the 14SG, however I do not know of any way to slow down your flap and elevator just for flap deployment. That has never been an issue for me...I fly mostly warbirds so I normally start my landing sequence by going to half throttle about 180 degrees from touchdown. I first pull throttle back to about half, then deploy half flaps. Most planes I have flown don't need any down elevator at half throttle and there is no ballooning problem. Then I put in full flaps shortly before turning on final. Once again I have my down elevator set to where there is no ballooning at that point. I have never needed a slow movement of the flaps & down elevator. I get it, when you are on the ground, it looks really cool to have flaps/elevator deploy slower like a full scale plane. It has never been an issue for me when flying. I also have a 16IZ, and I think slowing flap deployment is available, but I have never looked into it.
@@rcron4849 Thank you so much. Really interesting. I am currently flying Topflight P51 1640mm 20cc gas engine. I am trying to convert to suitable electric powered. So if you know any conversion tips it would be lovely. This is my first attempt to conversion. My issue are what esc , motor size to use and where to find a suitable motor mount, and do I need different spinner and washers to use with the electric motor. I think when I got this version it was for gas or glow but not much mentioned for electric motors. Thank you again.
This is one area I can't help you. About 3 months ago I was considering converting a Gas powered T28 to electric. After I looked at the details, I finally decided the amount of work involved would not be worth it for me. One major task I faced was how to change batteries without removing the wing? This would have been a major modification, that I did not think was worth my time, effort, and money. I currently own only 2 electrics; a PT17, and an Albatross & both are foamies. My personal preference is large gas powered aircraft. For me there is no substitute for the flight characteristics, the sound, and the in flight appearance and performance of gas powered aircraft. At my club field we have all types of planes flying (except turbines), and I enjoy watching all of them, yet my preference is large gas powered planes. Sorry, but I know little about the project you are considering. BEST WISHES AND HAPPY FLYING!
9:12 I don’t have a flap set under the model menu. !Thank you Futaba for unnecessary complications
2 things you should check. Flap Set function is only available when model is set for 2 AIL 2 flaps or more. Also, be sure you have the latest updates for your transmitter software.
Very clear and very helpful! Thank you so much, Ron.

No. Hangar 9 makes an electric retracts for this plane that includes main gear and tail gear. Also, you can purchase retracts from Robart, either pneumatic or electric. Also wheels and spinner are not included in this kit and must be purchased separately.

Great video, thank you for taking the time to make it
Excellent video, thank you
Fabulous video, thank you!
Excellent Video! I was wondering how to select the position of the flaps regarding to the switch position! For instance when my switch SG is full up the flaps turn to speedbrakes position instead the clean configuration I want to be. I wanted the middle position of the switch to be T/O flaps and down position to be LDG flaps. Any ideas how to achieve that? Thank you
This is difficult, without seeing the settings you have in your transmitter. If I understand you correctly, your switch is simply operating reverse of what you desire. I assume you assigned your switch in the function menu as primary control for flaps. It depends how your servos are mounted as to your settings needed. In most warbirds, the servos are side-mounted to a wing hatch, such that when you are looking at the bottom of the wing ,the arm is visible and moving in a fore aft direction. If both flap servos are mounted such that the motor shafts of each servo are facing different directions, then one servo must be reversed to the other. I assume both of your servos are moving together? If all you need is for your switch to move the servos opposite to what they are now moving, it can be accomplished several ways; 1) go to the link menu, servo reverse function, and reverse both servos.; or 2) In model menu, flap setting, you can change the direction of one or both servos using negative and positive throw values. Let me know if this helps, or if we need to search some more.
Futaba were really caught between a rock and a hard place with this radio they would have loved to make it easier but that would infringe on the next radio coming out my two cents.
Hi, first of all thank you for this extremely informative video about flaps on FutabaT14Sg. I have a question: i'm laying down a dummy model of three lifting surfaces with front canard and main wing having flaps. I'm thinking to use 8channel receiver with Y cable for each pair of flaps that should work simultaneously. Which type of model would be more suitable for this configuration ? Maybe 2ail+2flaps ? Or 4 flaps would be necessary instead ? Thank you
I think the 2 ail 2 flaps would be your best choice. There should be no problems using a Y cable and adjusting the LS & R/S of each surface using linkage adjustments so both sides are moving in unison; 2 channels for flaps would probably be necessary because the canard adjustments would likely be vastly different than on the wing. I think 2AIL 2 FLAPS would be the best choice. Having 2 ail might be necessary, should your model require Ail differential; if not, then you can then reassign the second Ail channel to anything else you might need.
Thanks Ron !
Hi Ron. One more question after i followed your advice for case 2ail+2flaps acted by 3 position switch. Wing flaps are connected to receiver by Y cable and they work correctly, having their neutral position with switch in pos.1 and moving down once in pos.2 and 3. At the same time canard flaps, connected to the receiver by two separated cables, move up with switch in pos.1, neutral in pos. 2. and down in pos.3 .They behave like elevator rather than flap and I don't figure out how to set them like wing's flaps. Btw. using a Y cable also for canard flaps they move like ailerons. I'm a little confused and manual is not of much help. Any advice ? Thank you very much
I am out of town and will not return home until the 2nd or 3rd, so I cannot try solutions since I dont have access to my radio. If I understand your situation, your canard flaps are moving like ailerons instead of with your flaps. I have found similar situations for dual elevator servos used in the rear of the fuse. This is easily corrected by using 2 channels with 1 servo reversed. To not have to use 2 separate channels, you can use different servo brands. I assume you are using Futaba servos, just purchase a HiTec servo similar size & torque to the Futaba and most will move opposite to the Futaba when connected with a y cable. I have done this with several models. Let me know if that works?
Hi Ron, first thank you for your advices. These are my findings: wing flaps connected to receiver with y cable, canard flaps connected to two channels. Linkages+ servos end points of canard flaps arranged in such a way that, also for canard , the neutral position corresponds to pos.1 of switch , pos.2 intermediate down and pos.3 full down. I didn't apply any reverse to canard flaps. Servos are not Futaba Hitec, I use general micro servos I had available. This is probably one of the many setups possible with T14SG but it's the only I found out to work at the moment with the knwoledge I have about the radio. Pls. let me know if you think there is a more efficient and affordable method. Now, with things ad described above, i would have a last question whoose answer I have no idea: how can canard's flaps be moved in proportion respect to wing's flaps ( for example full flaps for wing and, let's say, 60 % for canard ) always using the same switch ? Thank you in advance for any further advice
I just got the new 16IZ and this video is the best for describing many of the features. The flap section is especially good/ Thanks for taking the time to do for all of us. We appreciate your efforts.
Glad it was helpful! Your feedback is always appreciated.
Thanks Ron excellent video and very timely for me as just setting up flaps on my H9 RV4
Excellent!
Excellent video
