Senator Emerson L. Richards
Senator Emerson L. Richards (1884-1963), majority whip of the New Jersey State Senate speaks to the Fox MovieTone newsreel cameras regarding a bill just passed by the legislature authorizing the governor to offer a reward in case of kidnapping. This bill was passed as a result of the kidnapping of the 1 year old son of Charles Lindbergh.
Senator Richards was also interested in pipe organs and was the designer and consultant for the largest pipe organ in the world at the Atlantic City Convention hall. That instrument was nearing completion when this was recorded on May 23, 1932.

    Wonderful to see the video, but those early charcoal microphones couldn't handle the breadth of the sound of the organ.

    The three of these 1920s era videos Ive watched seem like the sheer sound level and dynamics of the organ and voices were overmodulating the mic and recording equipment leading to distortion big time, but it was a case of they recorded and had to develop the film and then discover the sound was terrible and no do-over. I remember doing audio tape casettes years ago and if the sound level needle hit the "red zone" on the sound level meter on newer/better devices the recording would come out sounding like it was dragged over a gravel road. I have cassette tapes from the 1970s and 1980s I transferred to digital mp3, some were very bad with bleed-thru from the opposide side of the tape being heard faintly in reverse, and some sounding "rocky" and noisy, so maybe some of the distortion in these videos is from age of the film.

    That was the organ my company replaced a few years ago as it had deteriorated badly. I can see the back of the original organ console @2:00 it was completely rebuilt and moved, and a second movable console in the same style with carvings was provided. The old Skinner organ had been rebuilt and altered multiple times over the years to the point it was no longer what it was. The 32' pedal bourdon pipes made of sugar pine had literally come apart at glue joints which failed, and boards that had big cracks in them, someone attempted to hold the together by boring deep holes all the way through the boards and inserted steel threaded rods with washers and nuts. They had also been rescaled and modified as evidenced by pencil markings and old note names that were partially obliterated. The pipes were removed, the 100 year old sugar pine was resawn and reused to make a new set of pipes and the rest of the organ was replaced, using some of the original ranks of pipes in it. A new carved case was also made Not one person in this video is still here to-day!

    These demonstrations you have made, Will, are extremely well presented. So very useful if someone is considering which sample set to purchase. Thank you. I understand that the organ of Blackburn Cathedral will be available later in 2022. A very different instrument from the more usual English organs and in a very different and striking architectural setting.

    @Will Scarboro, is it true of Solo Clarinet 8' is the 1877 Choir Corno de Bassetto? Why does the 2020 Harrison Restoration Specification DOCX didn't specify that? I know the Corno de Bassetto is the tenor member of the Clarinet family, but they are not similar to the Clarinet itself.

    Very nice Will ! One question: Is the sound I'm hearing coming from your speakers or are you using the direct audio output from Hauptwerk into your sound setup to your video/audio that eventually is the audio on the UA-cam video? Thanks for the very interesting review of the organ sampleset.

    • @whs1325
      @whs1325 3 роки тому

      Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it. The organ audio is direct from Hauptwerk and is mixed with my voice from the camera for the video.

    • @DIYerGuy
      @DIYerGuy 3 роки тому

      Thank you Will. That's what I thought because I briefly noticed you were wearing headphones. Usually, the organ sounds better when direct recorded, i.e. directly out of Hauptwerk as you did. I just wanted to confirm because the organ's sample set sounded quite good and I could hear pipe articulation rather well. It seems to be a rather good sample set of the organ. I would presume you're using the 24-bit full sample set as well. I'll check if you have other organ demos on UA-cam to view. In any case, thank you again.

    The priest looks awfully young for a rector. I assume Evensong was covered in this pre-recording for Easter by the vicar. The reredos is unfinished and most of the higher -up statuary facing Fifth Avenue appear to be missing as well. This church was still a work in progress.

      Seems unlikely, since who is going to PAY for all that just for a short film? Seems more likely the date of the recording is wrong or a different date was put on the film in the credits than it was actually recorded, we wouldn't know the "why" of that" but an altered date seems more likely than "staging" a totally fake Easter service complete with volunteer spectators, organist and clergy who did the time and work for free for a 6-1/2minute film @@whs1325

    Great video! I’ve been an organist for over 40 years and use an older Hauptwerk program on an older Apple computer which I play through a Roland/Rodgers keyboard. I’m adding a yamaha digital piano keyboard for the second and need to get some pedals somewhere. The organ I currently use on the computer is the Hauptwerk St. Anne’s organ which came with the program. A nice church organ sound for a smaller church.
