Garfish Swim-Bait Handmade Lure Part 14 - Series Conclusion as the Lure Takes to the Water
Incredible! Simply astonishing as this wood and wire construct literally seems to come alive. With the lure’s weight buoyed up in the water, its movements are spectacularly natural and realistic. Uninhibited joints give the Garfish a lithe, seemingly autonomous action as she dances and pirouettes at Greg’s command.
This week’s episode is really all about the grand finale swim-test. Though challenging to capture on video, the underwater shots reveal the extra dimension of the Gar’s self-generated sounds... a call which no doubt will attract predators from far and wide.
As this episode, and indeed this series come to an end, The Robust Garfish will find pride of place in the prototype cabinet, awaiting the day she is either cast at toothy critters, or perhaps set into a hand-painted backdrop of oil paints in one of Greg’s famous underwater oil-on-canvas masterpieces. As a collector’s piece of unusual mixed media, she is sure to find a home with a discerning connoisseur.
Known by some as the "fast food of the sea", the garfish is a long and slender fish that grows to around 75cm (30in) in length. The pectoral, dorsal, and anal fins are situated well back on the body and the latter two are similar in appearance. In natural live fish, scientists believe that the positioning of the fins so far back, gives greater flexibility to the body, a characteristic Greg attempts to emulate in his 6-piece design of the Garfish Lure.

Garfish Swim-Bait Handmade Lure Part 13 - The Detailed Air-Brush Painting Concludes
Переглядів 8342 роки тому
This week’s episode sees the airbrush work being completed on the Garfish’s tail and fins. It is a detailed job requiring several carefully layered hues of paint, a gentle rubbing off, and re-applying of colour to replicate real life. The end result is exceptional. While the painting is now finished, the colours appear somewhat dull and it will only be once the epoxy coating is complete, that t...
Garfish Swim-Bait Handmade Lure Part 12 - The Eye That Sees... as Half the Lure is Completed

Much behind-the-scenes work brings the one side of the Garfish Swim Bait to completion - complete with an eye, looking almost as vibrant as the living creature. This week’s episode sees Greg replicate the art from side one, laying combinations of paint and foil to bring the lure to life. Itching to get out of the workshop, we take a short sojourn and visit Greg’s testing pool to catch some fish...
Garfish Swim-Bait Handmade Lure Part 11 - First Coats... The Master Begins Laying Initial Colours

After another full day off screen, of working on the foiled body to inscribe the scale detail, Greg is now ready to lay down the first layers of paint. Watch as the simple hack of the ”sandback” technique gives realistic depth to the scale patterns, even at this early stage. With light tint colours laid one upon another, Greg works on the most prominent area of colour above the lateral line. Th...

Tiny facial scales, striations along the fins and eye-sockets a...

Greg, as a budding (please excuse that pun!) lure maker from Australia I stumbled on your channel when I was looking for advice on foiling. Your videos on that are the best, most practical and detailed that I have found. I then became addicted to your pursuit of quality, which to me culminated in this series on the swim bait! Simply superb stuff! I used to be a hobbyist furniture maker and followed a fellow Australian, David Boucher (Google him, he’s just amazing) who in my view is the best of his craft in the world! You my friend, are the David Boucher (or James Purdey and Sons, shotgun makers) of the lure making world! Just one minor issue that had me confused for awhile, you are using the term “opaque” when I now realise you mean “transparent”. Congratulations on achieving the level that you have despite the many challenges that I am sure exist in your chosen home country!

Sorry for late reply! Might be achievable with epoxy using matte filler but would have to experiment with ratios. I have achieved a good satin finish with 2k clear simply by mixing matte clear and high gloss clear. Again you have to play around with ratios.

#African lure Craftsman, dear Sir I am an admire of your work you do, you have been associated with Zerek if I am not mistaken, I asked many lure makers to make the Zerek fish trap lure, none have responded to it, that's the only lure which can be used both in Sea and River and I use it alot but it's very expensive as you know and only one person made and sent me one, it was made out of silicone, he did not make a video about it , but he told me that he made the mold out of resin(epoxy) and then injected it with silicone, it was a 2 part injection molding, and a separate mold for the lead harnesses, it would be kind enough for you to make it and show us the process since you were associated with Zerek, please a humble request, I repeat the Zerek (fish trap) with internal lead harness.

To be honest I'm not sure Zerek would be happy with me copying their product but perhaps in the future we can look at something similar. Just a quick message Greg, have you ever thought about putting a lure that you've made into a block of Epoxy Resin with the lure frozen in action? No need for any wirework, weights etc and could be a resin copy of the lure! I've just watched ' Mummy Shark Diorama' on UA-cam. You could actually use real pebbles and rocks for the river/lake/sea bed with obstacles such as real tree branches etc! Your work is then safely saved for the future and future admirers of your work! Just a thought that's all mate, I hope that you're enjoying your much earned and deserved break. Take care mate until the next time👍😷👍

Hi Andrew. Sorry about the late response! What a great idea! Actually I hadn't thought of that at all but the diorama effect would be a fantastic display piece I reckon. I have an old batch of tarbender (not sure it'll even set it's so old) that I may give that a go with using an old lure. I did have another thought the other day. I've lots of reject lures lying around and it struck me that they could be fantastic 'fish art'. I thought to cut the heads off them, behind the pectoral fins, finish them to foil, paint and epoxy standards and mount each on a little wooden shield, kind of like a taxidermy mount... but not 😀. I'll give your idea some thought. Keep well my friend!

The Lure Head Mount's sound's fantastic, and knowing you and your abilities they would look amazing. Hi Greg, it's great to see that you're feeling much better and the dreaded cough has gone. 150+ hour's in this lure! Wow that's a month's work at 40 hours a week!!! Well I can definitely say 100% without no fear of contradiction it's the best lure ever built on UA-cam. Isn't there any way that you could make a mould of it and make copies of her in resin? She is a credit to you, from what I can see she is perfect including her swim pattern a TRUE WINNER and so life like in my opinion. Angler's allover the world would be lining up for one. Now it's all come to an end it will feel weird not seeing her in your hands in the future, it's like saying goodbye to a much loved friend in a way. You mention that you have plenty of other stuff in store for us, I for one can't wait. Take care my friend until next time and thank you for letting me witness a true craftsman at work on his masterpiece.

Hey Andrew. Thanks for the kind words my friend! I'm looking at simplifying the design a little and taking a cast of it in the near future. Absolutely snowed under at the moment with other work sadly. It is what it is I guess. Wish I could automate my production but then I guess you lose the hand-crafted tag. Stay well mate!

Hi Greg, That could be a whole series by itself, showing how to get the Garfish ready and make the mould's etc! But I wouldn't worry about us, I would rather you take your time to gather everything needed instead of throwing any make do video out. I/we will understand 100%, plus you have a private life not just UA-cam and you deserve a break after the fourteen episode's of the Garfish. As they say "Absence makes the heart grow stronger", and we would respect you even more knowing that the break isn't just for you but the ideal time to get everything together for next videos. We also have another saying... "All work and no play makes Jack a sad boy" and we wouldn't like to think that we was the reason. Please have a well deserved break, don't worry about us we will still be here waiting for you. Have a great time, take care my friend until next time👍😷👍

Loved the garfish build and all the other videos you have done. Would be a shame to have the lure chewed up, but then it would be good to catch a fish on it. It’s a big dilemma for you , not one that I would like to make after all the hours you put into it. Keep up the great work.👍🎣

Many thanks for supporting us on our journey. Yes the Gar is going to be hard throw at toothy critters but bet I won't be thinking about it at the time... only one it's been ruined. More to come!

For me, the best thing about this final episode were the MANY close-up views of this bait under a wide variety of lighting conditions. Greg, the colors kept changing, exactly as they would on a live fish. Part of me wouldn't have been surprised if it had wriggled out of your hands. There are many words that I could use to describe this effect, but "phenomenal" isn't an overstatement. Congratulations!

Wow! Thats all I can say Greg, this garfish swimbait has turned out absolutely amazing!! Ive thoroughly enjoyed this in depth series and thankyou greatly for sharing your knowledge, skills and understanding. The action on the swimbait is nothing less than spectacular mate. with it swiming in both a general s action and a porpoise action. Outstanding!! Cant wait to see what else you produce in the future
