Matchbook Romance (The Getaway) - Demos and "...If All Else Fails" partial EP
Edit: Big shoutouts to xabandone_angelx for sharing with me the full demo recording of their Nada Studio Session, which I have linked at the bottom. I honestly can't believe I didn't manage to find that session earlier.
This was a short lived period for the band which lasted for around a year (circa August 2001 - July 2002) and was also when they started writing and recording most of the songs that ended up on the band's first two releases: "West For Wishing" and "Stories and Alibis". It is worth mentioning that this was also around the time when Aaron Stern and Ryan DePaolo joined the band, and no, they were not founding members like most people believe to be the case.
Aaron replaced their former drummer Adam Bock who played with the band when they were called Fizzlewink (I'll make an upload of their Fizzlewink's material in another video) and Ryan simply joined as their third guitarist (second lead? second rhythm?) and so the band line up became:
Andrew Jordan as vocalist, rhythm guitarist
PJ Manzo as lead guitarist
Ryan DePaolo as third guitarist
Ryan Kienle as bassist
Aaron Stern as drummer
Aside from crafting demos (some of which are currently lost) and releasing them on the web, the band actually began planning a self released EP titled "...If All Else Fails" which was scheduled to be released on March 24th, 2002, but a few months (or weeks) before the release happened, Brett Gurewitz contacted the band and told them to cancel the release. Brett offered them guidance and a contract so they could start recording a full LP instead and this LP became an early draft for "Stories and Alibis".
After they were signed by Brett Gurewitz, PJ Manzo decided to leave the band due to creative differences and the fact that he wasn't happy with the direction that the band was going. He then went to join a band called River's End.
While digging their old website Fizzlewink, I found out that on September 13th, 2001, they released a CD (limited to 100 units) containing two demos from their scrapped EP, this was at a showcase for Drive-Thru Records at The Chance, Poughkeepsie, NY. It is currently unknown what were the songs featured on that CD, but I have a hunch that those two songs have been "She'll Never Understand" and "Farewell To Friends" for reasons that I'll explain in the next section.
---- About this upload ----
So I decided to include two custom edits that I did for two songs from their Nada Studio session (circa 2001 - 2002), but I had linked the whole unedited session down below. (*) denotes which tracks were edited.
Tracklist - Nada Studio Demos
*Hollywood & Vine - 00:00
My Eyes Burn - 02:41
*Untitled Track #3 - 06:28
Untitled Track #4 - 09:43
As for the second part, these were some of the demos that the band released on their website (and mp3 page). It is assumed that they were intended to be part of "...If All Else Fails" according to some of the news that were posted on the PunkNews website back in the day.
Tracklist - ...If All Else Fails EP
Promise (Demo) - 12:51
Ex Marks the Spot - 16:41
If All Else Fails (Demo) - 21:39
She'll Never Understand (Demo) - xx:xx
Farewell To Friends (Demo) - xx:xx
(A possible 6th track?) - xx:xx
I can't say for sure if the EP was going to be a 6 or 5 tracks EP, tho according to some "history" section on their old Matchbook Romance page the merits for them signing with Epitaph Records is all thanks to a "rough, six-song demo", but regardless, those are so far the only known songs from that EP.
The demos for "She'll Never Understand" and "Farewell To Friends" do exist but are currently lost, and they were posted as downloadable tracks on their Street Team website: web.archive.org/web/20020220025935/www.thegetawayrock.com:80/streetteam/streetteammp3s.html which leads me to believe that perhaps those were the two songs that were featured on that limited CD, given the fact that the show in which that CD was sold, was well, a showcasing show for Drive-Thru Records.

Disclaimer: I have to admit, I'm not 100% sure if this is the correct date, but seems to be the right, Shane said "alright St. Louis, you guys know the words" before the breakdown. Setlist fm says they only played once at St. Louis on that date during their 2005 Warped Tour. Silverstein live at UMB Bank Pavilion, Maryland Heights, MO. Recorded on June 21st, 2005 at Warped Tour.
HILLvalley - Salutations (2009)

HILLvalley was a blues, folk, indie-rock musical project started by Ryan DePaolo, former lead guitarist of Matchbook Romance. This project began shortly after Matchbook Romance broke up in 2007. Their first album, Salutations, was released in May of 2009 and since then only a second LP has been released: Upside Down in August of 2011. I usually don't post stuff like this, specially not this gen...

I may or may not be uploading this just so it could line up with the recent news about the band hehehe This is basically the mid point between the demo version and the album release. This unmastered demo features an alternative vocal take during the first verse but aside from that bit, the vocal's take seems to be the same as the album version, this demo also lacks the guitar feedback intro and...

According to the data and info of these short clips, they were "MTV clips", so well, it is most likely that these were broadcasted by MTV at some point. Usually I have at least *some* info to work with when it comes to dates or locations about where and when something might have been recorded, but in this case, I have nothing. Not inside the meta data or from where I got it. All I can assume is that it seems like Nate is playing by himself and doesn't particularly sound like is from a Radio recording. Any help would be appreciated.

I LOVE YOU FOR SHARING THIS I LOVE MATCHBOOK ROMANCE
Hey! Just wanted to let you know that I made another video compiling all of their "The Getaway" currently available songs. I added a lengthy description explaining a little bit about that era of the band if you are interested to read about.
This is dope, thanks for uploading
ig you can call this the secondary demo
love this version<3
Damn interesting
@@bigcheesyzachary It took me months to be able to find all of these demos lol Glad that I found then tho, the What It Is to Burn demos are widely popular and uploaded but these, not so much
@@davidchez513 thanks, it blew my mind up knowing how they originally made
Actual peak
How did you find the official instrumental? Is it from the video game?
@@megano2000 I was doing more digging on the tbsunion website and I came across one link that wasn't a megaupload one (basically any megaupload link is a dead end when you are looking at old forums and such throughout the Wayback Machine) and well, that's how I found this Instrumental. Unfortunately the audio is of lower quality and I have no idea if it was released as part of the FF official soundtrack or some compilation, tho I suspect it was leaked and then posted at tbsunion site back in the days.
Thank you so much for finding these! This is new content for me!
@@megano2000 I'm glad that are you enjoying these! I did find a couple of other things too that I'll upload this week: a higher quality file of Follow the Format (better than the current one that's here on UA-cam), official instrumental of the original version of Error: Operator and an audio recording of their Vintage performance ... tho I'm not sure if I'll upload that one since it has bad quality
Dude. Once again, thank you! 20th anniversary of WYWTB today. I always thought this should have made that album. Keep em coming!

The memories 😢
It's been a while since last I uploaded something. Just been busy, that's all!
Is there any way to download this song in WAV, FLAC, or MP3?
Hey! Sorry I deleted the project file already. I was trying to export it to FLAC and then upload it somewhere but somehow the audio file wasn't exporting properly no matter what I did, so I just gave up on that idea.
🔥 🔥 yea fukk yea
Despite what the title says, this is still the regular YFW version and not the throwaway 2000 demo
I love this band so much!!! Hopefully you have more from this band

Honestly, beat Linkin Park mashup I've heard in a long time
Thanks! I appreciate it. I feel like I could have done some of the transitions smoother but at least I'm glad with it as a proof of concept!
@@davidchez513 hey. i just remembered that Figure.09 has 3 versions (i think), Original, demo and Plaster 2. do you think you can make a mashup with those 3 versions?
Nice!
Thanks!
Hey David - Thanks for uploading! My friends and I went to this show as seniors in high school. It was incredible. By any chance, do you have any video of this show? Please let me know and thanks again!
Hey no problem, I'm glad people been enjoying these uploads. As for video, no, unfortunately no. Most of what I have uploaded so far comes from old forums that were dedicated to these bands. This particular show was shared as audio only, presumably by Randy himself (? or was it Alex, I can't exactly recall the details but I think it was sometime after the band broke up for the first time in 2006 that it was shared on those forums.
@@davidchez513 All good. I appreciate the response. Do you have a link to these forums if they still exist? Wouldn't mind browsing a bit to look for other shows we attended. Thanks!
@@CT49ersfan When it comes to the old Finch forums (screamingmore and sharpeningbeneath) those are sadly long gone but some snapshots from both were saved on the Wayback Machine, that's where I digged out most of the Finch content I have uploaded. You may also want to check setlist fm, I updated a LOT of their setlists specially from 2005 - 2009, so I'm confident you might find there some info from another Finch concert that you may have attended in the past. If you have any other questions, let me know!
Thank you so much for the upload!!!
No problem! I also have a live acoustic performance of Follow the Format that I want to share. I recall there was a video of it, but I could only find the audio.
This is great content, thank you very much
@@gsanguinito Glad you are enjoying it! I just uploaded that Follow the Format performance, I tried looking up for the video but no luck
This is from Q101 in Chicago
Thanks a bunch, the meta data said K-ROQ lol so I just went with that info
@@davidchez513 it was 2-17-2003
Oh shit, is this the same acoustic version that was floating around for like almost 20 years?
Oh wait it's different lol
This version of WIITB is the same version from their AOL acoustic session just played at a different show. Dumb was already uploaded here years ago, but not WIITB
Really interesting. The poor quality doesn't take away from the great performance and instead adds its own charm. The host mentions "One Step Beyond" which I'm assuming is the name of the radio show. Maybe another viewer will have more info. Thanks for the upload!
Assuming the date is correct, this took place a day before their acoustic performance at Vintage Vinyl in Fords, NJ. So surely it was at some radio station around NJ or NY area, doesn't help much but could be some start to figure out more info about this radio session.
Hi, what's up? Can we have a chat outside YT? I have some MBR demos and I'm also searching for others.
Hey, I wouldn't mind sharing my Discord but trust me on this, those three songs (two of which were already in YT to begin with) are all the MBR content I had to upload, sorry! Still I would love to hear those demos, if you don't mind!
Hey, it's been a while, just wanted to let you know that I uploaded a full show with SBD quality. And by the way I found a few more demos from their The Getaway era and Fizzlewink as well, tho I've been looking for a few more demos: Promise, She'll Never Understand and Farewell To Friends. Promise demo is here on YT but it's such a low quality post. Do you have Discord or maybe a Genius account so we can talk about those demos and share what we have?
wtf I always remember Ender from this show, think I downloaded it back in the day. So great that you uploaded the entire show.
This is titz, thanks 🙏
Never knew there was a demo for this 🥺🔥🔥
Thank you for all these videos!!! Hopefully you have more😊
I managed to unearth a few more things! But that will be more likely all I will have to share from Finch. - PRO video footage of them playing Letters to You in Japan 2002 - Radio acoustic performance at K-Rock Radio which includes What It Is to Burn and Dumb (Nirvana cover), I think What It Is to Burn hasn't been uploaded here yet but Dumb has. - On a Plain (Nirvana cover) performance, tho no info about this, but it's definitely Nate singing this (and maybe playing alone). It wouldn't be the only time he has covered that song. There's a video here on YT on him playing it at a wedding, so yeah.
