How to Fit Aftermarket Handlebars to Your Brompton
Переглядів 2,2 тис.5 місяців тому
-Choosing Handlebars There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing your handlebar. A, C, P Line and legacy Bromptons have a non-removable faceplate stem so the bars can not have a crossbar or a loop, the stem clamp is 25.4mm so no oversized handlebars can be fitted. The T Line has a 31.8mm clamp with a removable faceplate. Older MTB-style handlebars, Easton, Raceface, and Nitto generally...

An Easy Way To Adjust The Gears On Your 4 Speed Brompton
Переглядів 1,5 тис.Рік тому
The new Brompton Advance derailleur is a great piece of kit but it can be a bit tricky to adjust, even using the recommended Brompton method. I came up with a quick and easy way to set the system up from the start. Since the system is pretty much a tiny derailleur from a standard bike I used the same method as how you would adjust any Shimano or Sram system.

Great insight. Are you not planning to add smaller chainring and front derailer?
very nice
Very cool, here in sweden we have float fishing rods that are basically overgrown tenkara rods called "metspö" so this idea isn't as crazy as you thought and it works quite well. Also don't be afraid to throw flies into still water, I catch plenty of roach on klinkhamers so it's not only trout that eat flies!
Ah that cool to hear. I got the idea from this old Chinese guy who frequents one of my local spots. He uses a very long rod with no reel, sort of like a heavier Tenkara rod. Seems to be a pretty universal type of fishing.
@eliotandal it's simple, fun and it catches fish. What more could one ask for, have a good one my friend. :)
Little tail heavy??
It could be but I also needed a lot of up on the tail to get it to climb properly early on in the flight. The mechanism is a little heavier than i would have liked, if I could drop some weight I could probably work on the balance a little more
cool! what handlebars did you choose? i want to make sure i get something wider but not too wide so the fold is impeded
I fitted Nitto "for shred" bars onto my bike, they are a fair bit wider but the folded size is pretty much the same. Usually there is a fair amount of room to go wider, sweep or crazy rise is where you run into issues with the folded size.
@@eliotandal sweet thanks!
@@eliotandal just a follow up, you changed bars on an originally S bar brompton? or did you go from an M bar to your new bars?

Motorex bearing grease but pretty much any bearing/assembly grease will work

Great video :-) Is it possible to use bigger jumps between the cassette gears to get more range, such as 12t-18t-24t, would love get lower rear cassette gearing on my 2-speed 2009 Brompton. Edit: Looking at my bike, I guess the max gear size is limited by the inside edge of the rear chainstay.
18t is usually the largest you can fit. The newer style 4 speed wheels could fit larger as the cogs sit farther inboard but I do not think the chain pusher would work with that wheel, there does seem to be some aftermarket options out there though.
Checking in as I begin my build like this!
Great video! No problems for the Brompton derailleur with a 21T cassette? Is there any chance of an even bigger, like 24T or is this the maximum it will cover. I’ve made a Frankenstein-Brompton myself, C-line rebuilt with new wheels and a 5 speed 11-24 cassette using a LT-Woo derailleur and it works really well. Hoping to buy a T-line in the future, but the original gearing is not light enough for the hills in Oslo.
The 21T is the biggest that will work with the stock derailleur, even it is pushing it a little bit. There are some aftermarket replacement derailleurs available for the P/T lines that allow a bigger range, I might fit one of those in the future. The bigger range is certainly nice.
Hi Elliot, great video. I just bought all the necessary for the upgrade. As I have a 54T chainring, my doubt is if is better a 104 or a 106 chain links.
I would go longer. You can always shorten it if the chain looses tension when you fold the bike.
Eejit!
I would have preferred a more constructive comment but sure
Nice Shimano hack! You went for the left sided bell I see....
Audio is tad difficult to hear, great subject matter.
Thanks and noted for future videos
Hi Elliot, very interesting and useful video. I have a 12 speed P line (with the internal x3 Sturmy archer hub and x4 external cogs). This model has the derailleur shifter on the left side of the bars with the internal hub shifter on the right side. Would your conversion work with this setup? Could the Shimano shifter you mention be fitted to the left side of the bars? And is there any difference in set up with the internal hub on the rear wheel? Any advice would be very much appreciated. I like the spread of gears on the 12 speed but for really steep hills, (plenty where I live) an extra, larger cog would be extremely useful. Many thanks for your work here. Kevin
Hey there Kevin, for the 12 speed bikes you do have to change both shifters. What I would do is get a matching Shimano 3 speed front shifter and mount that on the LH side of the bar and use that to shift the hub gear. It should work with the Sturmy hub with a little bit of adjustment. The 10 speed shifter I am using (and all 10s shifters as far as I am aware) mount to the RH side and can not be run on the other side. Alternatively there are some other 3 speed shifters that could be run, the 3 speed Sturmy thumb shifters would work. Other than the shifter, everything else will be the same between the 4 and 12 speed conversions. Thanks for that question. I will do some looking around and update the FAQ.
@@eliotandal hi Eliot, thank you for your careful reply to my message. I wonder if you can clarify one point in your advice? You say, ‘….get a matching Shimano 3 speed front shifter….’ But matching with what? How can I match with a 10 speed or the existing 3 speed Brompton? It’s difficult to know how to go about sourcing such components and getting it right. Sorry for my basic ignorance! Again, much appreciate your time and help. Kevin
Matching to the 10-speed shifter. I used a 10s Shimano Deore shifter for this conversion so the Shimano Deore 3-speed shifter (the one meant for front chainrings) could be used for the hub gears on the Brompton. 3-speed shifters designed for front chainrings are not specifically made to work with the Sturmy hubs but they will shifter everything fine. The indexing of the hub gears is much less sensitive than the derailleur gears so there are more options for shifters that can be used. Other alternatives are the older style Brompton over bar shifters, or the small 3-speed shifters used for 2 to 3-speed conversion on Bromptons.
@@eliotandal Hi Eliot, again many thanks for your careful reply. I intend to look into this conversion with all the items you mention. Fingers crossed it may well work! Thanks again. Kevin
Thanks for this. When turning the gear cable adjustment barrel, I'm assuming that the cw & acw instructions are from the perspective of facing forwards, i.e., as if sat on the bike. I'm also impressed by your bike stand. Whenever I try your setup, the bike always tilts to the front wheel facing down as I can't seem to lock off the clamp tight enough.
No worries. Looking at the shifter from the cables perspective. All of the references are clockwise to tighten the bolts/nuts. The barrel adjuster is pretty much just a bolt with a hole in it so same thing.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Brilliant!!! Thank you for this hack! I’d add that you should probably use 78a wheels. They’re very soft and easy to roll over rough pavement. I have them in my cruiser board. Huge difference. The higher the number (durameter), the harder the wheels. I use 101a for the smooth skatepark, and 78a for popping down to the shop or cruising the rough pavement in London.
Very nice video! Good diy cargobike videos are hard to find. I also build similar kind of 90s Marin cargobike last year and i love it!❤ I used Atran velo AVS quick release adapter for basket. Greetins from Finland!
Thanks mate, do you use the quick release system often? I made the front rack removable so I could swap it out for something else but I honestly have never changed it.
I don't use it very often, but when space gets tight, for example on a train, it can save the day
This is awesome
Super cool! I love cargo bikes, and home made cargo bikes are my favorites! One question I have about your front rack (the bit you built to attach to the bike). Did you add weep holes on the bottom of those? I would be worried that any water from rain (or any water from any source) would get in through the top holes you drilled and then just sit in there.
I did add 2mm (if I remember correctly) on each end of the square crossmembers. I did not drill out the round end sections as I left the ends open. I later closed them off with bar plugs so they should also get some drain holes at some point.
Turned out great.
Thanks mate!
GT frame ! 🤪😍🤩 Wonderfull ! May be the square frame a little bit thick. I made one with 16mm diameter and rounded in the corner. I like your bike ! 👍👍👍👏👏👏
Thank mate! the front rack is probably a little overkill but it was much easier to weld.
Great video, thanks man!
Cheers man!
Great video! And you’re a natural in front of the camera!
Thanks for this! Have you noticed any durability issues (increased rate of wear) with using the lighter weight 11-speed components on the Brompton, compared to the beefier stock cogs/chain?
I actually think the 11 speed stuff lasted a bit longer than the stock parts. The newer chains seem to wear really well compared to older 7/8 speed stuff, maybe better metals or coatings? This bike was my regular commuter as well so it was pretty well used. The only real downside of the 11 speed stuff was the increased cost and a somewhat more fiddly set-up.
@@eliotandalcool gonna try my hand at it. Thanks again!
Cool!
Lovely cargo!!
Just the inspiration I needed! That's a great build.
How did you Weld The 2 crown tubes together if The mtb frame is aluminium?
The frame and spare headtube were both steel so the welding was pretty straightforward.
Amazing! I was trying to find a video about this mod as I’d seen it on BrommiePlus. Your version is a bit simpler than theirs though which I like.
:00
This video is helpful as it is short, to the point, well produced, and does not overly complicate the process.
Thanks mate!
Nice, simple, short, helpful video.
Will this work on a C explorer with 6 gears
No. There’s no derailleur. And space is limited by the strumy archer hub. The newer 12-speed bikes have a different rear triangle- it’s wider
Yeah the C Line is completely different system. You can add a third cog but it uses different parts.
I’ve done a similar conversion to this on my 4 speed P-Line (now 5 speed) using a kit from Brommie Plus which also modifies the existing Brompton 4-speed shifter. Well worth going
I hadn't seen that kit before I did this, I am a fan of the Shimano shifters from the MTB though
I hadn't seen that kit before I did this, I am a fan of the Shimano shifters from the MTB though
Велик конечно классный, но намного ли тяжелей стало управлять им?
It is surprisingly easy to ride. Unless it has a lot of weight on the front it rides pretty much like a normal bike

I am looking for tutorials or ideas to build a Bullit cargo bike but as compact as possible, maybe i will see a tutorial on your channel someday
Hey mate, I have wanted to build a small cargo bike. Maybe a mini velo or something like that so maybe Ill have a video up about that one of these days.
Can i do that on a regular single speed?
you are the artist
Would you mind sending a link to your friction shifter? I can't seem to find one like yours, it looks great, and I'm not into the indexed fork shifters
The shifter I used was the Velo Orange thumb shifter mount and an old Shimano down tube shifter. There are some other friction shifters out there, Sunrace is a big one. If you are looking to mount it under the bar like I did you will need to get a front (left-hand) shifter and mount it upside down. velo-orange.com/products/vo-thumb-shifter-mounts-22-2-23-8
Clever & informative. Thanks for sharing!
Elliot, this rocks!!! I have a couple of questions regarding the shim used in the head tube extension, around 3:40. 1. Do I need to be concerned with the shim fusing to the head tubes while welding? 2. If so, would a plastic or wood shim introduce other issues while welding? Thanks!
I made sure to drill some holes and plug weld the two parts together, this also stress relives the joint but its not really necessary. If the welds are good a butt weld should be fine. Wood would probably be fine, I would tack it and knock it out then weld the rest. I would not use plastic as I think it would contaminate the weld. Keep in mind I am not a welding expert and I try and overbuild if I have any doubts so take my advice with a grain of salt. Hope that helps.
