#thepixies #numbergirl #japaneserock #alternativerock
Boston band Pixies changed indie rock music for ever, but a Japanese band called Number Girl picked up where the Pixies left off, taking 90s alt-rock to new heights across Asia and beyond. This is the untold story of Number Girl.

From Failure to Success: The History of 'Nothing But A Heartache' by The Flirtations
Переглядів 32 тис.9 місяців тому
#theflirtations #soulmusic #nothingbutaheartache #tobytwirl #1960smusic #petebest This is the untold story of the 1960s soul classic 'Nothing But A Heartache' by The Flirtations. After initial failures, two rock n roll musicians from Northern England and an R'n'B group from South Carolina come together to create a huge hit record. But is their most famous song actually taken from an obscure 7" ...

#francomicalizzi #filmsoundtrack #thevisitor Often overlooked on lists of top film soundtracks of all time, but Franco Micalizzi's music for the cult classic 'The Visitor' aka 'Stridulum' (directed by Giulio Paradisi) from 1979 is so epic and bizarre, not to mention full of amazing samples, it's definitely one of my personal favourites! Jesus christ man, at least learn how to pronounce japanese language before having a go, it's not hard. Hi Sa Ko. Not Hisa ko. I have loved this band for 25 years and you're not wrong when you say that Hisako Tabuchi inspired other guitarists, she's up there with Hendrix in my book. You didn't even touch on the fact that it was the bassist who destroyed the band, and he went on to do approximately fuckall while every other member made successful albums with other projects. this video sucks.
"Toby Twirl - Romeo and Juliet" isn't like "Nothing But A Heartache"^^ 🤦♂
Twenty years ago, I listened to Number Girl alone in a suburb of Japan. Now, I can share my feelings about them with people all over the world. It's a great happiness for me.
Wow!! I knew this Toby Twirl tune way before any of the other tunes. Amazing research. from Athens GA
VERY informative and enjoyable video ❤ Had no idea The Flirtations were also The Gypsies who I also ADORED
Came across Number Girl by random on UA-cam one day, and I had to click anything called "School Girl Distortional Addict" out of sheer curiosity. Phenomenal band, I would also recommend all the stuff both Mukai and Tabuchi have done after Number Girl.
This is one of the best informative videos on bands that I've seen made on UA-cam. I enjoy the style of the video a lot! And as a fan also of At The Drive-in and ART-SCHOOL it was a nice surprise to hear them mentioned here!! Im interested in your radio program that you mentioned, so i'll be checking that out! NUMBER GIRL will be always really special!!
Thanks for watching (and listening!)
The video for the song was filmed in Tintern Abbey, South Wales. I think it was fairly unusual for its time to set a video in a location like that rather than a more typical studio performance or scenes in London streets. It's almost like an 80s video. A great looking trio too.
I was wondering if anyone else in the entire world had stumbled upon this movie soundtrack, I’m so glad it’s not a completely dead internet lmao
多分また稼ぎたくなったら復活するだろう ピクシーズと同じだね
Thy for the story, this fantastic song beats everything in the 60s.
Very happy to find a new band. Thanks
Thank you for this.
Veltpunch also a dope band
I hope the gen z rivive the sixties classic hit by the flirtation nothing but a heartache .make it more current that will trend on socmed and become a tiktok trend
Very influenced by, but different. I saw them in Tokyo on their Seppukei tour. Loud as hell and fun. Zazen Boys is also fantastic.
Wonderful history -- Thank you so much for putting this together! Just one more similarity with the Twirls "Romeo & Juliet" - what do you think of "Pictures of Matchstick Men" by Status Quo? I think that is more similar to the Twirls song than "Nothing but a Heartache." What do you think?
Thanks for promoting them!!!
Wow, what an interesting story with a distant Beatles connection!
To anyone that thinks the pixies were totally original I suggest you listen to she’s like heroin to me and sleeping in blood city by the Gun club. And remember this band came before the pixies.
I mean like without Pixies there would have been no Number Girl, but Number Girl is sooooo much better than Pixies lol. NG is way up there
Oof, I love Number Girl as much as anyone else here, but better than the Pixies? That's a bit of a stretch.
Great band. Can tell with one listen they did something incredible.
Thank you for this story! It’s always great to know some more rock history!
TOUMING MAGAZINE MENTIONED🔥🔥🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼🔥🔥🗣️🗣️
Motown was, along with the British artists, the soundtrack of the 60's. So many excellent groups on the Motown roster.
wow just saw this.. at first.. started my channel to promote these guys around the globe... it was such a different sound. i could go on for ages.. thanks again for making this... edit: dave worked with em since the destruction baby E.P., made before s.g.d.a.
Hi, thanks for watching!! Great to hear from Number Girl fans!
No soul clubs in Liverpool pal.
Num heavy metallic album is the lead reason why nakao - bassist leave the band, becs mukai want to do experiment with new sound, hiphop/rap/traditional japan sound. Which leading mukai full time into his solo project - Zazen Boys. If nakao agreed about that experiment stuff we probably hear a new album from them tho.
Id say that number girl was more of japans answer to at the drive in or fugazi
Hi My uncle was Wayne Bickerton ,loved to see all the clips you put together. as a kid growing up through the 60's & 70's thought this music was good realise now how good it was. Thanks for all your efforts 😀
Also sounds like Status Quo's "Pictures of Matchstick Men".
It sounds like an ost to Hokuto No Ken
I DID notice the similarities between the Toby Twirl and Flirtations singles as soon as I heard "Romeo & Juliet,", and a record collector directed me here to your video. Thanks for the info.
One thing you did miss and forgot to mention, was that 'Stronger than her love' by the Flirtations was a massive hit on the northern scene. It flashed past but you failed to mention easily one of the best northern tracks ever recorded imho. KTF!
Thanks! Great track, and would have fitted nicely into the Northern Soul reference in this video!
he missed quite a lot actually
As a collector of UK psych pop, I had heard the Toby Twirl song but not the Flirtations song. Believe it or not.
Stop spreading misinformation, there are thousands of spectacular indie bands and number girl is just one of them, not nice calling them Pixies of Japan for the views, also as pixies was the only band to mention, what about Husker du, polvo, unwound, bitch magnet, pavement, archers of loaf and so on and so on, instead of talking half of the video about pixies you could have actually talked about Number Girl.
I had a beer with them at The 100 Club.
Never even heard of it, and I was kid when it came out. We listened to a lot of soul in our household too.
Great record, same chord sequence as Pictures Of Matchstick Men
Stale news 🥱
ROY ORBINSON WAS MORE POPULAR IN BRITAIN THEN U.S. AT THIS TIME
do one on michelle gun elephant and yusuke chiba he recently died. he had two other big bands like rosso and the birthday
He had more than that. Love you, Rocker!
@@JoeyLevenson fucking beast
this is so awesome
"You ask people to name their favorite 60's soul tune, this song will come up every time." Uh, not saying it's not an ok song, but no it won't ... 🙄
Yes, you’re right. Don’t know anyone who would mention it in the same breath as a Linda Jones etc
it does come up all the time?
Loved it since I was 11 in Toronto.
There was also Tina Turner who came to the UK to restart her career after leaving Ike. So maybe not so strange that The Flirtations could do the same. Best Dave
I always wondered how these three ladies from South Carolina ended up at Tintern Abbey in the Wye valley! The song is great, it's just sooo 60s.
I think they're more Japan's Husker Du.
Well, they got a song named "Pixie Dü" after all
@@Aurichu Damn now that you mention it. That makes so much sense.
what we know from song titles: mukai loves iggy pop, pixies, and husker du LOOOOL
FINALLY! A video covering Number Girl, they were a random UA-cam find for me, but the guitar tone was the best thing I’d heard in actual years. Quickly become one of my F A V E
Thanks for watching!
Never heard of it before kind of happy about that it’s rather awful
