    I’ve been playing a Hohner Corona II for about 20 years mostly playing Norteño and TexMex. How can I program the Roland accordion to have it so I can program the bellows to make 1 note when going in and another note when going out. Also, can I program what notes the buttons will have so it will play like the Hohner?

      Hi Robert, Thanks for watching my video. That is an interesting question and I believe it will be my next video - thank you! I am going to start the short answer with - the manual is confusing on this point. They talk about transposing with octaves and also keys. That being said, you can change the octaves and save them in the User Programs. This will allow you to "jump" up and down the keyboard with the touch of a button. If you are talking about changing the key (which is what I think you are asking), that is not as easy to do. You can change the key to say "A", then you must save the system setting to keep this change. It is kind of being able to have a "C-trumpet" or a "B flat trumpet". There is a way (not a good way) to change the key with the registers, but I don't think the process is very good. This will be easier to show in the video, which I think will be out sometime this week.

    Hi Joe. I thoroughly enjoy your videos, they are so informative. I play a Roland FR4X and I'm very happy with it. The editor is easy to use and I enjoy programming the Accordion and editing my own sounds. I recently bought a Roland FR1X as I need a small Accordion when I play on the festival circuits in the summer. However I'm having trouble saving the edits that I make like Orchestra touch, Program Change TX and Midi TX. Am I right in thinking this small accordion does not save all the edits like the bigger Roland accordions do? I.e the FR4X & FR8X. Kind regards.

      Hello and thank you for viewing my videos. I am so glad that you find them informative. I am not sure what you mean when you say "save all the edits like the bigger Roland", so I am going to take a "stab in the dark". You are correct, the 1x is very limited compared to the the 4x or 8x. For example, a lot of the edits are global and you need to save the system setting to keep the edit, and then it will not change again until you go in and change it. The User Programs are very limited, in that they only save about 40 settings. That being said, the 8 User Programs with the 4 User Programs makes this guy a great addition for festivals.

Would you be kind enough to advise me how that is done on the 1X? These are the problems I need help with: 1) Adjusting the touch sensitivity on the 1X, and then saving the adjustments. 2) Program Change TX - When using a midi module the 1X changes the sounds on the module - I need to be able to stop the 1X doing this, and be able to save the adjustments. 3) Saving changes I make on the Bellows adjustments. I use a lot of orchestral sounds such as pianos, guitars, Strings, and bass on the 4X and would like to replicate those on the 1X. I need to be able to make adjustments that makes the touch sensitivity almost non-existent. I make adjustments to the touch sensitivity and turn the accordion off. I have a few questions and would greatly appreciate your advice: Could you recommend any online resources or tutorials specifically for learning the basics of playing music on the Roland FR-1X? Unfortunately, I couldn’t afford the Dale Mathis Edition from Kraft Music Store due to the higher price. Do you have any suggestions for other sound sets I can install? That is a great question! The short answer is "No, you can't import the F-Folk (32) set". There is a way to "create" the set and then work with it. Here is how you can do it (I think I will create a video to show how to do this). The basic idea is to use the editor and then select the type (32) that you want and then "create" the set. Thanks for the great videos. I’m a newbie with both the digital accordions and accordions in general . I’ve set the BLC to 8. And the resistance regulator to the stiffest position so I don’t have to expand the bellows too much when playing and maybe get more nuances with the bellows movement. One thing I can't say for sure if it’s because of the digital accordion or just accordions, I have to make much more effort in the push than the pull to get the same volume when playing . Is there something I should be doing to keep an even volume? I don't know if you also play acoustic. In that case would you consider do a video to show the differences in bellow behave in both type of accordions? :) Thanks in advance !

    • @joekarwoski
      @joekarwoski 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching my video. Now for your question. Being new to the accordion, and especially the FR-1x, I would suggest two changes. The first, I would set the bellows curve to 4. At 4, you will get the expression (loudness) with much less pressure on the bellows and it will be easier for you to focus on the music than on the mechanics of playing. The second item would be the bellows resistance regulator knob at the top of the wrist strap. If you open it, the bellows will move very easily but you will hear the air moving (I don't like to hear that when I am playing). If you close it, it will be very hard for you to move the bellows. I think you may like it better closed as you have it now. You may also want to try a fixed volume (like setting 3), then it is always the same and you don't have to move the bellows at all. After back surgery, I used that setting for a bit to keep from hurting myself. I hope this has helped. Joe

    • @nico.nico.harmonica
      @nico.nico.harmonica 2 місяці тому

      @@joekarwoskithanks for replying. I’ll do that. I’ll go with 4 and keep the tight setting on the regulator. I have no reference point on how an accordion should operate bellows wise, so I’ll stick to one configuration and start playing already 😅. I was tempted to leave it set with a fixed response, but I’ll miss the dynamic control for sure .

      Thank you for viewing my video. I have a number of other videos dealing with User Programs and User Sets that may also help. I would suggest starting with how memory is organized. Watch the video to see how things work, that will help with understand the workings of the FR-1x. It is such a fun accordion. You may also like the bellows curve option. I had back surgery less than a year ago and this was the only accordion I could play for months. Here is the link to another video that should help: ua-cam.com/video/6TriglbC9tI/v-deo.html

    Are the Dale Mathis program on all user programs U1,U2,U3,U4,?

    • @joekarwoski
      @joekarwoski 3 місяці тому

      Honest answer: I don't know. I have Dale's sound on my 8x, but not on my 1x. I am thinking you are asking about the User Sets, not the User Programs. User Sets would be U1, U2, U3, U4. User Programs would be U1A, U1B, U2A, U2B, U3A, U3B, U4A, U4B. That being said, I believe Dale has programmed all 8 of the User Programs. I have talked to Dale in the past and he is wonderful, very knowledgeable and so helpful. I am not sure if you have one of his 1x's, but in any case I would send him an email an ask. I am sure he would be happy to answer that question. Once you have the answer, I would be thrilled if you let me know. Thank you for the question! Joe

      I believe I understand your question now. It sounds like you have made a change to the system. There are a few things that you could have done, split the keyboard or redefined the notes one way or another. Without knowing which thing you have done, I can not tell you how to undo it. The semi-good news is that there is a way to get back to normal. Again, I am not sure what all you have created so I would suggest if you have done a lot of work that you back up your sets. That being said, I would simply reset it to factory specs. You do this by holding the register 3&4 when you turn the power on. Here is a link to a video I did on resetting to factory specs: ua-cam.com/video/sX0_kHWV3AE/v-deo.html

    I want to work on changing my Bass and Chord arrangements. I watched Dale's video on the sounds he's programmed into the 4X with 7 switches. I have Dales's 4X and a non- Dale's 1X. That's what I'm going to work on today. Any thoughts

      @joekarwoski 3 місяці тому

      I have an interesting thought. If you look at the 1x editor, you can open the 7x editor. What do you think will happen if you create a 7x set, import a base register into the 1x and then try that set. I have not done this video yet, but it is on my list of "things to do". Hope you had fun today, let me know how it went.

    Eh, Joe. I got a question for you. I created a User program with my fav settings (eg, accordion set #34, drums #5 etc...). The treble side is just the Master (all 5 reeds)... Occasionally I like using orchestra sounds on the right hand, specifically 3C which is Clarinet... But when I hit the 'User' button and then Register 1 to retrieve my user program, I find that the Orchestra button doesn't work in the same way -- I cannot find my Clarinet, because the readout display is still shows "U' in the front -- User program mode. Is it possible to use orchestra sounds for the right hand when the User Program Mode is activated? Thanks. Sergei/Canada.

    • @joekarwoski
      @joekarwoski 3 місяці тому

      Hi Sergei. Thanks for the question. If I get a chance, I may try to do a video to answer your question but I did not want you to have to wait for the video. The answer is yes and not exactly how you may think. Before I get too far is something that you may want to try: take your accordion settings and store them in say U1A, then create the same sounds with the 3C-Clarinet and put those in U1B. Then you could be playing U1A and when you want to switch you simply hit register 1 and that will put you in U1B which would be the Clarinet. That would be one way, there is another but it takes much more work and really only works because of how and what the FR-1x saves to the user programs. When you save the accordion sounds (the active sounds), the 1x also saves the orchestral "main" register, not the subset. For example: If you have set #34, etc and before you save the setting you were to go to the Clarinet in orchestral register 3C. Exit orchestral and then save user program U1A. After turning the 1x off and then back on and select U1A, of course all of your accordion sounds are back. However, when you hit the orchestral button you will get the Flute (which is 3A), not the Clarinet (3C). It saves the register (1,2,3,4) but not the subset (A,B,C,D). It always goes to the A setting. The other way I mentioned is to change what is located in the orchestral registers and put for example Clarinet in 3A. The problem with that is you need to create an entire new User Set to make this User Program.

      That's what I thought: once you're in a User mode, you cannot use the Orchestra button for the Treble! I enjoy your videos. Now watching Part 1 of Creating a User Program. Thank you for viewing my video. Now for your question: First, if you have a standard FR-8x you will need to use the second folder after following the video since you have version 1.00. You would repeat the same steps as before with the other files. However, from what you are saying, I am thinking you have the Dallape edition of the FR-8x and you will need to get the updates from that support page and not the ones for the standard. Here is the webpage for that download: www.roland.com/global/support/by_product/fr-8x_dallape/updates_drivers/f30db5ce-4e90-43e9-ad8f-0c34602d8771/ They also have instructions on the page and between those and my video you should be able to update without a problem. I hope this has helped.

    I use the function switches often on my FR-1X as well as my FR-3x. Subtle use of the pitch buttons can be very effective . Switching the rotary on/off is also very effective on organ passages. The importance is in changing it while performing. These functions also are great for controlling synths over midi. You have to give up the only F# row on the 1X but it is worth it to me. 😎🪗

    Hi, Joe. I'm a new subscriber from Calgary, AB, Canada. I have a black FR-1X...I asked Dale Mathis about this (how to create custom default start mode on the FR-1X) and he directed me to the customer service of the shop where i bought the accordion. I just wish you'd get more drums with FR-1x, something like floor tom-tom and high hats.

    • @joekarwoski
      @joekarwoski 4 місяці тому

      Hello from Western Pennsylvania. It is a shame that they only give you 8 drums, it would not be so bad if you could "mix and match" the bass and chord drums but we are stuck. The User Sets are really nice because you don't have to keep the same registers. For example, being three years older than dirt, I don't hear the piccolo sound as well as others (or maybe it is that I don't care for that frequency as well as others). You could replace that with an edited clarinet reed or whatever else you want. It is simply a fun little accordion to play with. I am going to try to get a new video out this weekend.

  • @HHTV60
    @HHTV60 4 місяці тому

    Hi, Joe. I got my FR-1X a few months ago when Roland dropped the price by $1,000. I’m slowly learning all the features, and I wish there was a way to make bass drums sound richer. Did you find a way to edit the way the bass side sounds? I’d love to have a floor rom-Tom sound when I press the bass button, and high hats when I press the bass chord. My favourite on the treble so far is Orchestra Clarinet 3C. It sounds very nice paired with some drums on the bass side. Thanks for your videos. They are helpful.

    • @joekarwoski
      @joekarwoski 4 місяці тому

      Hi and thank you for viewing. The drums are very limited as to what you can do with them. I am sure you have seen that you can change the drum set and drum level. The problem is that those are really the only drum specific items to edit on the 1x. When I look at the software and check out the FR-7x editing, I see you have options to link Bass and Cord Drum Link. When I have time I am going to do some playing with that because if you make a change there and then export the set, then open it in the 1x you will see the settings saved. The problem is that I don't think the sound system on the 1x is able to use those changes. I believe it is a hardware limitation - which is not surprising with the cost difference between them. I love the Orchestral Clarinet (3C) also - it is fantastic with dual mode. I also enjoy the harmonica.

The number of hours it takes to get even one set to his standard is unbelievable (and there are 4 on your FR-1x). I will be doing a short video on how to save User Programs from the FR-1x. Thank you for this and all previous videos with such valuable information on this instrument. I keep learning a lot from these entertaining excurses... (Allthough I am far away from actually using the drums, as I struggle with the most basic songs - only started to play 2 months ago). Concerning the letters on the tiny display: In the user manual appendix is a list of all letters of the alphabet and their corresponding display values.
