The Reality of Running Injured | Ultra-running Injury Prevention
I’m wanting to take my GSP on a half marathon race next year. His longer runs now are at 7-8 miles. He currently is 14 months which means he would be about 16-18 months if we did a half marathon later towards the beginning of 2025. Is that too early as long as I slowly condition him to 13.1 miles?
@@fitnessessentials1 I’m definitely not a vet but that would be pushing the limit in my opinion. If he slowly builds up his mileage it could be possible. I was super patient in getting River out running longer distances as I’ve seen other people hurt their dogs with too much too soon. I would think long term knowing that if you take it slow you will have a running partner for 10+ years.
Ok. Cool. I appreciate it. He’s the absolute best and I don’t want to hurt him. To be honest, the reason I want to do a half with him is to continue to do cool stuff with him. I want him to experience it all. I want the world for him. Thanks for the advice
@@fitnessessentials1 You’re welcome 👍🏻 I’m the same as you. These dogs are the best and make amazing companions. I’ve heard it takes up until they’re 3 years old to fully develop so just be mindful of that. Sounds like he’s off to a great start. Congrats!
Help I actually thought I was supposed to look at something 😂
@@Helooooo-o6j Lol. Made you look. 😂
I felt really inspired by this. I haven’t felt this way about many things in a really long while. This advice can change people’s lives. Don’t give this up, it’s amazing. Keep inspiring!
@@GiraffeLoverMusic-m5m Thank you for the kind words. 👌🏻I’m glad my words inspired. Keep grinding and moving forward.
Amazing Sir, congrats for the achievement!
@@lmaganin Thanks Lucas! Appreciate the note. 😎👍🏻
Another great video. Coming from a cycling background I really like SIS gels. They are not as thick and go down easy. I try multiplying numbers to distract myself and since I’m horrible at math, it works for me.
@@fernandobagnasco7365 Thanks! Agree on the SIS gels. I’ve used those before and have found them to work well. Only criticism I have is that the gel is bigger so when you carry a bunch it takes up more space. 😎👍🏻
I agree about the Pulse belt, hate putting it on as well. I bought the Naked belt to replace it and same issue. Would be so nice to have a big clip on the back to snap them on and off quickly. Good honest review of these products. It seems like maybe Salomon is falling behind a bit to the other competitors in this field after owning top spot for years, especially in the shoes. 🇨🇦
@@MonteComeau Totally agree Monte. There are a lot of good options out there and Salomon is not always the best. Thanks for your comments. 👍🏻
On the trail running subreddit they asked users to post links great running UA-cam channels. I posted a link to your channel. I hope that’s ok. I think you have a great channel where people can learn. Keep up the great content.
@@fernandobagnasco7365 Thank you so much. I’m very humbled by that and look forward to continuing to share more content, learning, and teaching what I can. Thanks for the support!

@@bandanaboii3136 You should have kept scrolling then. 😉
Loved the video and subscribed. Are you allowed to bring food and drink on the loop or only feed in the tent. Looking forward to your future videos
@@fernandobagnasco7365 Thanks for the note and subscribing. Yes you are allowed to take food on the loop as well as in your rest area. I ran with Tailwind in a bottle every loop and often took chips or beef jerky out with me. Some guys take sandwiches and cokes out on the loop. Lots of different strategies around calories. Something I still need to master. 👍🏻😎
Hey Ian I am going to use the Garmin Enduro 2 in Moab next week. I will let you know how it does. It has an auto lock that works pretty good so it takes a sustained press of the button to turn off the lock and then another press of the button to stop it.
@@bcrruns1085 Awesome thanks. Look forward to hearing not only how the watch works for you, but how epic Moab will be. Good luck out there!! 😎💪🏻
In prep for Sinister a friend and I did most of the hill work in Bragg. Moose for the long slog simulation and Prairie/ Powderface for vert over distance.
@@warrenl3545Thank you for the advise! Definitely need to get out there to get more hill work this next year. 😎👍🏻
Have only gone up to 50k so can’t speak to longer battery life but the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro I used to have and current 945 are both great. No issues with accidental button presses. Love seeing the local trails on here!
@@chad.haggerty Thanks man. I’ve looked at the Fenix before. May need to give Garmin another look. 😎👍🏻
I am a Garmin Forerunner 945. In ultra mode mine was still at 40% battery after 24hours and you really need to push the buttons to stop it. I have had no issues. Love it.

@@Stick79 Thanks man!
Love the nose hill park, not crowded and beautiful
@@ndehgan Agree. Such an awesome spot to run in Calgary.
I raced 100 km in 2016 just before they made the time cut offs so hard. I carried 2 bladders (one with e lites and one plain H2O ), bit heavier but worth it for me ( my thermometer hit 40 degrees in the north loop, that heat is no joke but it can also be freezing at night). I took on the mindset that "i get to" see the same route in the dark and that is a bran new adventure., It helps with the mental game of doing things like gun rage hill again.... I don't think they allow pacers on the 100 km anymore but that also was a boon of my 2016. Poles are a game changer. I live east out side of Calgary so i get the flat land but Mackinnon flats has helped me a ton. I am thinking to do the 50 km in 2025. You may also want to scope out River Edge Ultra out near Devon if you don't already know about it. Happy Training!!
@@vonayengrindhoug8760 Thanks for the great feedback and sharing your experience. No pacers are allowed on the 100km only the 100 mile distance. Love your mental approach to the loops. 👍🏻😎
Going big! That is awesome. Planning, planning, planning. Looking forward to following your journey and learning along with you. I haven’t planned much for 2025 yet. I will be going for my first 100mile at Lost Soul and also looking to add some new to me events in the 50k zone to meet new people and have new experiences.
@@mikemackenzie8618 I like to swing for the fences…lol and yes so much planning. Good on you for doing the 100mile next year at LSU that’s a big one as well.
Congrats!!! Looking forward to hearing about your journey. You’ve got this.
@@Runfast45 Hey thanks a lot. It’s going to be a journey for sure. 😎✌🏻
Good luck! 👍
@@ndehgan Thank you! I have a lot of work to do. 😎✌🏻
Hey man! I did my first BYU on Saturday and I did the exact same as you, I went out for loop 18 and turned back! My quads were completely destroyed , I did average 35 mins per loop which was way too quick I think! I’ve learnt so much though I will be adding so much more hill work both up & down into my training!
@@georgekirkman8325 Well done man. Congrats. Always a few lessons and training opportunities to take away. I’ve noticed that a lot of the guys that go super long tend to go slower and eat on the loop versus in the rest area. Still a puzzle I’m trying to solve so I can make 24 hours the next time I try a BYU.
@@FUDNF very true the one who won at the weekend was averaging around 50 minutes per loop so just enough time to eat , drink, toilet and then go again! I was having so long I think that I was starting to seize up in the later loops, probably better to walk a bit more and have a little less time.
@@FUDNF and I am also going for 24 hours + the weather at ours was horrendous, heavy rain for the whole night loop, they almost cancelled the race and I fell over twice on the trail due to roots etc at night as you could see nothing, hopefully better conditions next time and I can make it through that night part .
@@georgekirkman8325 Agree. That seems to be the best strategy. But then the day can throw all kinds of curve balls out you which makes it such a fun but tough challenge. I don’t feel like I’ve hit my full potential in the BYU format so I guess I will need to find another one to do. 😂
@@FUDNF I’ll be looking for one in the spring next year! Always tough in the U.K. with the weather but at least I’ll be guaranteed to not be too warm 😂best of luck in your journey!
Always learning. Great video. The heat caused my downfall this year as well but I will be back next year. I thought it was funny that you see me filming the start of the race in your video. See you next year!
@@mikemackenzie8618 lol. It was a learning year for sure. Great to see you out there and see you again next year! 👍🏻😎
Comment for the algorithm! We’re incredibly lucky to have the Hill here. As you mentioned, great variety so everyone can run the run they want!
Next year, man! Few friends ran and all talked about the heat. I’m sure you already know but Nose Hill is probably the closest to Airdrie for easy (?) hill training. Tons of places to do repeats. Newly subbed and glad to be here!
@@chad.haggerty Thanks Chad! Thanks for the note and sub. It was a hot one for sure but next year no excuses 😎 I know Nose Hill well and even have a video on the channel about it. Glad you’re here. 👍🏻
@@FUDNF I’ll look for that NH vid now. Nice work on the edits/filming btw. Very clean, comfortable watching experience without some of the…choppiness of other channels with low sub numbers. That will change quickly, I’m sure. Really good stuff, man!

Hey Ian. I was glad to meet you and chat for a bit there on the first leg. The heat was definitely a huge hurdle to overcome on the day. Great video! Keep them coming.
@@bcrruns1085 Thanks Baron. Great to meet you out there and congrats on the finish. Also best of much in Moab!
Well said!
I ran one last year on Long Island. I gave up too soon and I know it. I am running the Sayville Running Company Backyard Ultra in December and this year, my goal is to keep going until I can't finish in time. Last year, I changed my shirt after every loop. It just felt refreshing to have a clean shirt on. I plan on doing the same this year. I also want to finish every loop with at least 10-12 minutes to rest before the next loop. We'll see how it goes.
@@RichRuns909 Good luck man! It’s always good to have a clear plan and then be ok when you need to adjust as the day goes on. The backyard format is such a fun and painful challenge all at the same time. Go crush it!
nice doco, loved your summary.... very honest, always good to reflect that way to understand whats needed to get better next time. i have the Arrowtown BYU on Nov 9 in NZ. would love to see you there one day.😊
@@chadgillespie9088 Thanks Chad. Appreciate the comment and support. It’s hard not to get humbled in this sport most days! lol. Good luck in Arrowtown. 👍🏻
Nice documentation of your BYU. I did my first one last fall at the inaugural Cottonwood BYU near Nelson, BC 🇨🇦 and will be running it again on thanksgiving weekend but really understand what you mentioned about people hitting their goals and then dropping out. I did that when I reached 100K last year when I still had more laps in me. It was my brain that just said "That's it, you reached your target now lets go home and sleep". I am going into this next one with no target in mind and determined to see the sun rise. I watched a podcast with world champion Harvey Lewis this evening and he said he drinks lots of electrolytes and pee's every lap to keep things moving through his body, what you you think of that strategy?
@@MonteComeau Good luck this year in Cottonwood. Having a goal to make It to the morning will help you stay focused. I also agree with the concept of peeing every lap to gauge how well I’m staying hydrated. As the day goes on I find it harder to keep Drinking sweet electrolytes so next time I’m going to switch to water through the night and more solid foods. Best of luck!
I have used PN pretty much the same way you tested it out for a while now and used it to fuel my last three 50K's without any issues. Just a heads up so you do not under fuel yourself in your upcoming race. The 1500 tabs have 750mg of sodium, not 1500 as you mentioned a few times. Wouldn't be good to be only getting 50% of what you thought you were taking! However, if that was what you thought you were taking on your training run and felt great then maybe you don't need as much as you think? Looking forward to following your adventures.
@@MonteComeau Thanks Monte! I caught that and initially assumed the tabs were 1500 each and saw they are 750. 😳
I got the heavier version of the leki ultratrail. For amateurs like us they are better and seem more stable. Have run 2 ultras with them (100k + 5000m ascent each) and they were great. After hours of continuous use the gloves may get tend to get stuck to the pole, so using a bit of hand cream helps every now and then. For the less technical races I use the lighter version without the gloves.
@@willneverforgets3341 Thanks Will. Great advice. I’m running 100km tomorrow which will be the longest I’ve used them at one time. 😎
yea that seems true i hate talking anyways
It is an amazing city park for running. When I was younger, I mountain biked there a lot. Now I run the perimeter or do the permitter with a lot of up and down along the perimeter. For road style running, I stick to the top. You can make any length day you want up there. My biggest single loop was 25 km and 1100m. I’ve done a double loop at 33 km and 1200m. I’ve done a lot of up and down at Many Owls for an efficient hill session. Love that park. Have you found the car? I finally did last year. I live 3 km from the park, so I use it a lot.
@@alane3983 I heard about the car!! Haven’t found it let but will keep trying! 😎👍🏻

@@Pi2.718 Thanks and congratulations on the new pup. They are the best breed ever. You will be busy now. 😎👍🏻
Have you tried the caffeinated gel? That will give you an extra boost plus change up the flavour.
@@Runfast45 I have them but have not tried it yet. Thinking that the caffeine will be a nice kick in the later stages of my ultra. Have you tried them before?
I have tried the caffeinated gel and the chews. I love them both.
@@Runfast45 I need to pick up the caffeinated chews. 👍🏻
Love doing the Saturday Park runs there!
Such a gem of a spot.
I signed up for the 15 loop in Okotoks next year. June of 2025. Any training tips? Highest I have gone is a 50 km a few years ago
That's awesome Bill..congrats! If you can do 50K you can do 100K! The biggest training tips from me would be getting lots of easy mileage in. The key is time on feet. You will need to practice your nutrition strategy in the months leading up as these events become just as much as an eating competition as a running event. A combination of fluids, carbs, solid food, and electrolytes are important to dial in. Everyone is different on what you need and can tolerate so practice a bunch. I also did the Goggins 4X4X48 challenge as part of my training which was a good mini simulation to try out. It helps you run when you brain and body don't want to. Last, practice the pacing. You will find that you will likely need to slow way down from your normal pace and will want to do this in the actual race. Getting a loop done in under an hour is easy. Finding your best strategy for how much rest you take after a lap will dictate how fast you run. It's a great event and you will have a great day. I will likely see you there next year!
@@FUDNF These are awesome tips, thanks for the detailed response! I will check into the Goggins training plan too. He is intense!
Hey buddy, great video, how do you go about training for one of these, I have done my first marathon (Calgary 2024) and I am eyeing this up in 2025 what changes do you make through the week to adapt? many thanks.
Hey man thanks and congrats on the marathon. The biggest things that I found in my training for this was a few things. Definitely a lot more weekly miles but mainly easy running versus pure road marathon training where you have a lot more speed work etc built in. You need to build up both mileage and time on feet. Also practicing a nutrition strategy and getting good at eating and running and figuring out what you like and can tolerate. They say the backyard ultras are just as much a eating contest as it is running. I also did a fair amount of running at night to get used to that. Try doing the Goggins 4X4X48 challenge. It's a good mini simulation that I've put into my training in the past leading up to these. Last it's tough to work on but the mental game is so important. Putting yourself into situations in training that take you into the hurt locker a bit also helps prepare your mind. Good luck!
@@FUDNF Awesome, thank you for the detailed reply!
I try to double up on my miles. If I run 9 on Tuesday, I will run 9 on Wednesday. I try to do two long runs on the weekends, like last week I did 13 miles on Saturday in trails and the 17 miles on the road doing hills. Like he said, getting the legs used to running tired, so just building up the volume. Last week a group of us for training, ran 4 4.167 loops Backyard style as a way to get used to running, stopping, resting, and running again.
Ive run every kind of race at every distance but never a backyard ultra. My buddies have and tell me its brutal. I am registered to do one in a few months. I gotta find out how or why running 14 min miles can be so difficult😂 🏃♂️🏃♂️
@@marlinweekley51 Lol. It’s a whole different challenge and mindset. I have a love hate with the backyard format and know I have a better result in me. Good luck in yours! 😎👍🏻

I’ve done this past 3 years in a row it’s really not that hard, Just the lack of sleep towards the end of 2nd day As nutrition water+ chicken+ venison is all I did felt fine following day
@@joshchapo Agree Josh. The physical side is not as much of a challenge as the sleep and repetitiveness of it. It’s a good fitness and mental builder.
@@FUDNF Yes definitely a good mental builder for sure. The first day is easy , the first night is quiet , then the rejuvenating morning runs and by the end it starts to get to you a little bit mentally, I’d say mainly due to sleep deprivation, and as you say the physical part really isn’t that hard, But definitely a good little challenge to do Feel great after it’s accomplished
I was wondering if River is from a show breed and where did you get your training information from?
@@PatrickGerstner-cm2tq Hey Patrick River is not from a show line. He was from a local breeder here in Alberta Canada where we live. I worked with a trainer named Tyson Hainsworth who taught me a lot. His company is called Cog Squad. 👍🏻
